I remember some discrepancy over the backlit alienhead on the M18x and M17x models, is it supposed to vary with brightness, or not?

From what I remember with the M17xR3, there were some LCD assemblies that had a separate LED board (white only, not AlienFX) for the Alienhead on the lid independent of the brightness of the LCD display. Some people didn't get this by chance, in which case their Alienhead was fully dependent on the LCD display brightness.

I think all M18xR1 Alienheads are dependent on the LCD display brightness

Nothing was ever broken or needing to be fixed. They changed the design and the Alienhead eyes on the LCD cover are simply clear, allowing the LCD backlight to shine through them for illumination. The M17xR2 had a dedicated AlienFX Zone with a color-changable LED board. Some dude tried to make a big deal about it way back when the M18x was first released, but it was pretty silly and his "let's make a stink" thread fizzled out in short order.
