2133MHz notebook RAM may be available in the near future, but if the 1600/1866 experience is anything to go by, you can count on it being sky high in terms of price, limited in availability, and not much of an increase in anything for what you're paying.

My guess would be that 2133MHz RAM won't be of much benefit anyway until the Ivy Bridge generation of chips is out, but even then it is still going to be some pricey stuff, and 1600/1866 might be the better deal similar to what 1333 is now. It might be worth it for those who want to throw hundreds of dollar or more at such an 'upgrade' for a 'possible' performance increase that isn't even noticable, except perhaps on the most memory-intensive of applications.

I'm more curious about DDR4. That should be a noticable upgrade.

You surely cannot go wrong with Kingston HyperX! Max supported memory type for your CPU is 1600Mhz, so you may want to get HyperX 1600Mhz.

The frequency we are talking here is speed at which memory communicates with the CPU. By default 1600Mhz is max for 2920xm. You can use 1866 dies, but still CPU and Mem will talk at 1600Mhz.

You can't tell the different in real time But there is some fps increase.

I was playing league of legend , it was 380+fps max , after I slotted hyperx 1866ram its up to 411+ fps.

Even tested in Resident Evil 5 , was tested with average 168.8fps , with hyperX 1866 ram increased the fps average of 179.7fps. Basically it increase 5% fps.

Also 2920 support up to 2133mhz ram in bios setting.

PS : Personal experience 1866mhz (2x4GB + 2x2GB) 12GB HyperX. Forgot to mention , its HyperX PnP Ram (Grey Colour , you don't have to set anything in bios)

Cool, thanks. And what exactly is the setting that has to be changed in the BIOS if 1866 ram is installed? Or maybe I'm oblivious to other threads that have the answer lol

It's under the advanced tab in the bios. The same screen that you use to overclock your cpu. Scroll all the way to the bottom.

iPhantomhives, how do you know these 5% isn't just the 1333-1600 difference there? If the CPU and mem can talk faster, there is obviously the difference there, and that's along the 1333 vs. 1600 line. Did you make the tests yourself? Can you document them? To properly document 1866 performance measure the difference between 1333 and 1600 first.

For 1866 vs 1600, the only faster thing for 1866 RAM is in-between memory dies data transfer. It will show a memory speed increase in some memory benchmarks, yet in the RL any gain related to RAM dies talking to each other at faster speed while CPU still talks to memory at 1600 will be pretty much unnoticeable and surely won't lead to a 5% fps increase.

We are creating a 1866 myth here, just a bit, you know, aren't we?

Faster ram definitely shines in synthetic benchmarks and physics tests. I believe you need the 1866 or higher to have a 7.9 memory WEI on the M18x as well. I have a 7.8 with my 1600 HyperX.

Does the standard 8 gigs install under the back plate or would replacing the first 8 gigs require getting under the keyboard? I want to rock 8 gigs, but really don't want to go under the keyboard.

    Hi Iphantomhives,

Do you mean that the M18x can take those:
    KHX2133C9AD3T1FK4/8GX T1 W/Fan Intel X.M.P, DDR3-2133MHz, Non-ECC, Unbuffered DIMM ( 4 - 2GB @ 9-11-9-27 - 1.65V ) w/ HyperX fan
    ???

I just ordered 8 gigs of 1866. Any reason to go from 8 to 12 or 16? I have a few bucks to spare, so I am just wondering if I should make the plunge or not.

In general it seems that more memory is better than just faster memory, at least for the money, if you don't need the speed for benchmarking.

So, 8-16GB of 1333MHz for under $100 is probably all most people really need. 1600MHz stuff, especially like the HyperX, is great, but at twice the price, not really twice the improvement.

But the 1600-1866MHz is still a worthy upgrade in terms of using the capability of the CPU/Memory. Even if it's not exactly cheap, 16GB of 1600/1866MHz is still a deal compared to what 32GB of 1333MHz costs at the moment.

Thanks for the heads up. I will probably go ahead and pick up the last 8 gigs because if I don't spend it, my wife will. Now to test my nerve. I never really had the stomach to get under the keyboard of my M17x, so the 18x is even more of a gut wrench.

32GB of 2133MHz would probably cost more than the rig you're putting it in.

Kinda nice the M18x has the capacity for future upgrades if/when the larger sticks ever get more common and less expensive. I suspect it'll be outdated by then, though. Besides, 32GB is just for bragging rights, 16GB is doable, economical, and still excessive, at least for now.

Doesn't have to be dual channel but that's what you want. Dual channel just means you are running two of the same sticks for increased bandwidth rather then just one stick. It does have to be 204 pin though if you want it to work
