Can't believe Canadians get better price on the M18x. $150 for the CF upgrade is just sick, sick..

I hope these ship as quick as the m11x R3's did. Had a EDD of 5/17 for that and got it on 4/29. EDD on this is 5/31.

why do u guys get 4gb dual channel ddr 2dimms?

Memory upgrade from NewEgg is a lot cheaper.

Main difference (other then having 2 extra sicks) is cost and expandability. Generally more sticks tend to be cheaper as the individual higher capacity sticks tend to be more expensive. If you have 2 and your machine supports 4 you can just put another 2 in to get extra RAM.

wirelessHD is a way to send video to a TV that has a wirelessHD receiver.

 

so, even though i get 4gb ddr 2 dimms today,
i will be able to upgrade it to 32gb 4dimms later on right?

oh I thought wirelessHD has to do w receiving signal from router. maybe i dont need it.

LOL I watch plenty of TV, but then again at 41 I am an old fart I mostly game on the weekends these days. I have my m17x R2 hooked up to my TV as a Media Center and to play games in the living room!

I would compare it this way...

Desktop i7-720 to i7-920.

Imho, yes to 2720qm.

 

Doesn't the 2720qm help also with running game emulators? Or is it specific game emulators (like Dolphin?).

 

I upgraded the processor to the 2720qm worth it imho. It's not just a speed bump but it has other features too you might use. Intel's site has specifics on it.

 

definitely get the 2720qm over the 2630. i only got the 2630 because im eventually getting an ES 2930xm.

 

The speed bump will help but the true "feature" is on the virtualization piece with the Direct I/O ability on things like VMware or Hyper-V or other virtualization platforms and with this thing being such a beast I plan to load it up with 16gb memory and use it as a desktop replacement. No more tethered to my desk. Upgrading from a Dell Studio XPS 16 with an ATI 4670 so I'm expecting a huge jump in performance

 

Here is my deal so far. Is it worth trying to get something better? So far I got -2% epp discount, 2% approved manager discount for missing dpa 3% and a -57 coupon. My config is below. I've bolded the stuff I upgraded from base config. Plus the WiHD stuff is gonna be kick @ss for me as I have a projector in the living room and I sit in my chair with laptop so streaming wireless gaming to the 12 foot screen over Wireless HDMI is gonna be sweet. Man I'm such a nerd....little nervous as this is the most money I've spent on a laptop. Not that the money is the largest issue it's always been the desktop just has so much better performance but after seeing benchmarks I think this might work. =)

Sadly, the order was on there for 24 hours, and I just canceled, because I want to wait for the 3d screen to come out.

 

Now that is a deal. I've been thinking about getting an M18x. Anybody care to dissuade or persuade me?

That's not true, it's not up in the air, it's DEFINITELY going to come out, however Dell hasn't located a proper manufacture yet on that monitor and I suppose if they never find the proper manufacture then yea it may never come out however they're working hard on locating a proper manufacture.

 

i feel like they should've been "working hard" on getting a 3D screen provider 6 months ago they'd probably have a much larger audience for it if they provided it at launch. i assume people are just going to buy it now to have it, when they probably would've paid more to upgrade to 3D initially

i'm thinking about it (if i get an m18 or R3 that is).. i wish someone who got one in the m14/R3 would make a review of it when it arrives so i can decide if it's worth the $$$
