Hi fellas. I haven't forgotten the help you gave me earlier in the year. I am back to full health now and that help you gave me was awesome. Thought i would give you an update and a few nuggets of info along with a question if i may.
My system has been running well since and its lightning quick, well to me anyhow, since I upgraded the RAM to 32GB of HyperX and I have added 2 500GB SSD's after cloning the HDD. This all coming after the 2 GTX 675m cards failed a few months apart and you guys helped me get through installing a GTX 970m and flashing the bios back to that oh so special one as i was on A17 iirc.
A couple of quirky bits of knowledge for you. My machine will boot and works just fine running an extended desktop spanning onto a second monitor whether i use PEG or SG. The choice is mine. However, If i play Elite Dangerous, i have to have the bios set as PEG as it will only see the integrated card otherwise, and that is just oh so painful, but, not a problem to me at all as, i only ever use this Alienware plugged in anyway. I decided to riminess over World of Warcraft Classic, the re-release of the original 2004/2005 game version. So i installed that and have been dabbling in MC and BWL ever since. I noticed as i went along periodically i would get a black screen and it would crash and hang. After quite some frustration i finally have it under control. Older games, such as WoW Classic i have to play with the bios GPU setting as SG and newer more modern games like Elite Dangerous and WoW retail i have to play with the bios setting as PEG. It really is that simple and no bother to me switching as it only takes 30 secs to reboot and change anyway. No more unexpected crashes, unless i forget of course.....go figure.
Now, i downloaded Gears of war 5 earlier and install it. When launching it complains with the fact that i am running driver 353.82 which is well out of date and fair comment i suppose. Its what i have been running on since installing the GTX 970m back earlier in the year. In fact, it is what i had windows install from device manager at the time to rid myself of the yellow triangle. I installed back then GEForce experience and when i check for driver updates on that, it is saying i have the latest driver despite saying there is an update.....download....no, you have the latest, update....no...repeat. So i have tried the retro driver downloads manually and the installs for 387.92, 456.71, 442.59 all report the install cannot continue as there is no compatible hardware.
Is this the end of the road ? am i stuck on 353.82 ? It's no big deal to me if so.
Cheers !!

Hey, glad to hear you're all good.
Did you flash the newest unlocked BIOS that adds support for the 900 series cards? Check the post from javers in the link below. This should allow you to install drivers direct from Nvidia without the need to mod them.

Other than that you'll have to use a modded driver. Device Manager will only find that really old driver to install, how it installs baffles me. -
No i havent, that is excellent news and i will look at that right now.
Thanks. -
OK, flashed the bios, rebooted, changed back to SG mode, booted into windows, launched GEFORCE experience and its prompted me to install the latest version driver 456.71 release date 10/07/2020. Whooosh.
Driver installed perfectly.
WoW classic perfect
Gears 5 now runs
Ill check Elite dangerous later....tested it, oh yes, can play ED whilst in SG mode now too.
Amazing stuff guys, thanks very much, awesome work.
Could i technically just go to a 1070 now ?
I also have another question but, ill put that in another thread later.Last edited: Oct 26, 2020Emm3 likes this. -
That BIOS only adds driver support for the 900 series, not the 10 series unfortunately. I wish it did.
Glad to hear it worked for you! -
Curious if this applies to the Alienware 18? ( not sure if the new designation is the r3)

Kudos to Javers i have to say the bios changes are excellent, my usb stick is gold dust. Some days ago i was prompted for a driver update to 457.09.....which in turn was as smooth as my manscaping.
