Hi guys! I am a proud owner of an M18x R2 with 2x 7970m crossfire. I was using it normally and couple of days ago I tried to boot it up and it couldn't... When I was pressing the alien head it was showing only a black screen and couldn't even get to bios boot. The warranty has expired, so I took it to a laptop "expert" to figure out what it has. Apparently the chip of the gpu is faulty and needs replacement. He told me in order to fix it I have to pay 200euros for the chip replacement. When I asked him if he could just remove the faulty gpu and replace it with the other one which was ok, in order to became functional and boot normally he told me that he can't and it won't boot... Is this true or is he trying to scam me? Is my only option to replace the gpu chip in order to be functionable again? I need the laptop ASAP and currently don't want to spent 200euros on it...

false. you can pull both the 7970Ms out and run on the intel hd 4000 only if you're in a financial pickle.

Better yet, just use the good card if you want to game. No gaming with only the on board card

OK I removed the faulty gpu and replaced it with my secondary gpu in my system. So my laptop is currently working fine with just one 7970m. But I am curious... What if my last gpu dies too? Will I be able to remove it too and after I boot, it will automatically switch to using the integrated Intel hd4000 or will I be seeing again a plain black screen? I am wondering about it because if I go to the bios now in the dedicated option it says "ATI GFX", but in the integrated option it says "not found"...

The 7970 cards are known for failure unfortunately. If the one has died you would be pretty safe to bet that the only is going to follow suit before too long. This happened a lot in the Clevo/Sager computers that were running them. This is reaching a little ways back in my memory but there should be an option in the BIOS that allows you to switch to iGPU instead of the dGPU you're running off of now. It's basically a switch inside the system that changes which the video runs off of. No auto switching between the two.
