Hello everybody, this is my first post, but I've been following this forum for quite a while...
I have few quick questions, a local retailer here where I live is stocking some new M18x R2s with one year warranty with the following configuration:
The asking price is $1355 USD + TAX
I'm wondering if it's still worth it to consider buying this given the model is 3 years old and discontinued which finding replacement parts may prove to be hard and problematic if something failed after warranty period and in the next following years since I'm planning to keep this for 3 to 5 years.
Is the asking price fair given the spec and everything?
Is there any better alternative/s for the money?
I'm also wondering where do they get these new units from since the model is discontinued!? If this is an old stock, shouldn't I worry that the fans and the other mechanical parts may not be in a good shape sitting all this time in a warehouse somewhere for years, you know dried up oil etc.
Sorry if my English isn't proper, it isn't my native.
Thanks in advance.

I'd say that's a pretty good price for a new system. Even used I'd say that's a bargain. The R2 is still the best system AW has put out in my opinion. Parts are still very much available, but some are a little more difficult/expensive like the motherboard.
Is the warranty through Dell or the retailer? Are they in fact new or refurbished models?
I've had my R2 for almost 2 years now. I have tinkered with the idea of selling it and getting the newer 18, but when I think about it, nothing compares to my R2 (except some of the higher end Clevos with desktop CPUs, but I just don't like the build/looks of them). I originally had the 3740QM and upgraded to a 3940XM CPU. I also had dual 7970Ms, but upgraded to 680Ms, followed by 780Ms. I am now in the process of upgrading to 980Ms (*cough* @woodzstack, lol). I plan on doing the dual PSU mod as well.
The R2s have had a long life, but seem to keep getting stronger. I'm not sure how much longer we'll be able to upgrade the GPUs (the 980Ms may be the last for this generation), but the thing is still a beast.TomJGX, TGWnbr, Mr. Fox and 1 other person like this. -
Best laptop ever made in the history of computers in my opinion. That's a good price. Owning an M18xR2 will always be like owning a classic American musclecar... nothing to not love about that. It doesn't have to be the fastest in the world to still be a really sweet ride.

I kind of agree with that. I miss my M18X-R2, but I would say second best is the M17X-R4 (Which I still have, but its for sale. Highest offer is 1400CAD with CPU and 980M and fans modded, and triple heatpipe heatsinks.)

M18x R2 seriously is the best laptop ever created. Timeless design, strong components and selection of ports, gorgeous display. No other computer can stack up against it, not even the Alienware 18, which IMO, was a downgrade as was the rest of the 2013+ lineup

Not only is it the best laptop ever created it still very relevant. I still own two and even the one with 680m's kicks ass. With a mixture of high and ultra and a few tweaks it gets 90-120 fps in bf4 depending on the map and players... Plenty of parts still available and easy to work on outside of warranty.

Thanks guys for your inputs, really appreciated.
@Mr. Fox, I like that analogy, sounds cool haha
@SkylineLvr, the warranty will be through the retailer itself, they claim it's brand new not refurbished, is there a way to verify given I managed to get them to provide the service tag?
I checked dell support site and entered the service tag and I don't seem to find that info anywhere, please see the following images:

If a retailer is giving a warranty with it and they are reputable I would jump on it at that price.

wait... 1350USD ? for M18X-R2 with warranty ???? I would buy it. I would upgrade the warranty with DELL directly afterwrads and go the 5 year premium with XPS service, then when it breaksdown, upgrade it for free ! If it doesn;t break, still worth it. Actually - would be especially worth it if it doesn;t break - would mean its one of the good ones. I had one once. Took 6 machines before I got a good one.
M18x R2, still worth it?
