I am using CF 6990 for skyrim..but only get about 30 frames per second AT BEST?

Is something wrong? Default Ultra settings...seems rather low.

I am using FRAPS to record FPS.

    Anyone know of solution?

    CF is enabled.

This is not a joke. Alt-Tab, in and out of game. Works for me every time. Framerate goes from 30 something to 50+ depending on area. Only really happens when running xfire.

I do have xfire enabled and mainly in the large OPEN world areas when i have max distance and everything set to max..does it hover around 30 frames per second (is this normal). When I am in a more enclosed dungeone i'm capped between 50 - 60.

    thx for alt tab tip

Went from 11.9 CAP4 to 12.1 and Cap1 (11.12) and Skyrim was BUTTER smooth. I really like the ATi profiles in it as well the new setting for Crossfire, but can anyone explain those such as 1x1 Optimization?

Can someone confirm that the driver version in 12.1 is 8.93.10? Just trying to make sure that I got the most current one after so many dirty updates.

With my 580's, I am seeing indoor FPS of around 40-45 and outdoor about 45-50 (this is with every option set to maximum/ultra, running at 1920x1200, FXAA enabled and detail levels set to ultra with distant object detail checked also under advanced game options) - also includes some tweaking to the .ini to enable maximum (high quality) Ambient Occlusion and a few other "eye candy" extras. Running at a mild gpu OC too and cpu set to level 3). With these settings, its smooth and very beautiful scenery too....havent seen a dip below 35fps. Check out the spoiler below for settings used from the following two threads:

Guides: Five Fast Skyrim Tweaks Guaranteed To Make Your Game Look Better - GeForce - (I applied all of them using Nvidia Inspector btw)

http://www.thenexusforums.com/index.php?/topic/457953-skyrimini-or-skyrimprefsini-confused/ - (did this one to reduce mouse lag and also remove vsync capping)

The game runs really well, gpu temps stay around 72c and it looks beautiful too ! - I guess I could reduce some settings and enjoy a higher frame rate but I prefer the eye candy over 80-90fps.

12.1 doesn't support proper xfire though, right? You running with xfire disabled? Textures flicker with it enabled.

Nope, no flickering and running Xfire. I remember having some issues with the 6990s. Downgraded to the 6970s and everything is fine now.

Yea, when I have time to really sink my teeth into skyrim I may go back to 11.10 for xfire support. Just running on the one 6990 the game runs smooth on high, but even there I feel like it could be "smoother". Its just a little choppy in some situations. Nothing that even constitutes as lag, but its just not that "smooth" gameplay that I get with xfire.

Why did you downgrade to the 6970s? I'm curious why anyone would do that.

Almost correct, M8 :) I was going to sell my machine and put the originals back. But couldn't force myself to list the beast in the marketplace. This laptops is a keeper :)

And now, I'm too lazy to put the 6990s back. Will do when there's a game I can't max out.

I spent hours the other night trying to get Skyrim to run smoothly on xfire but I didn't get anywhere. I installed the new skyrim 1.4 beta patch & new drivers AMD just released, hoping it would fix the xfire stutter/lag issue, sadly they seem no closer. I've disabled xfire now and run the game on ultra but with aa disabled and fxaa enabled, it runs smoothly 90% of the time.

In all honesty, i'm beginning to give up hope AMD will ever fix the xfire stutter/lag issue, the games been out now for 3 months and it really should have been sorted by now, maybe they just can't fix it.

I can really recommend this. Nothing short of absolutely amazing. Grab it from Steam for free:

Skyrim: High Resolution Texture Pack (Free DLC)

Experience The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim as you’ve never seen it before with the Skyrim High-Resolution Texture Pack. Make sure your system requirements exceed Skyrim’s recommended specs before attempting to install, including Windows Vista or 7 operating system, a minimum of 4GB of system RAM and a DirectX 9.0c compatible NVIDIA or AMD ATI video card with at least 1 GB of RAM and the latest drivers.

Tell me about that, haha. Got to lvl 81 in the first 3 weeks of play and haven't even started the main quest. It's a huge and dynamic world, but IMHO, it's tiny compared to Baldur's Gate. How I wish someone would re-make the old series in skyrim style... That would probably be a 2TB game lol. A man can dream..... :(

It's not really apparant from the Steam screen that it must be near the entire game that'll be downloaded

I'm 5min away from finishing the download. Will post feedback soon.

Yeah, the thing is, it's absolutely useless to level up in this game as it will always adjust to your level, till you get into munchkin uber stage and reach 100 on smithing, alchemy, enchanting. Then it gets too easy even on master.

Figured out where the extra 3.1 Gb come from. This is a quote from PcGamer:

The pack adds three gigabytes worth of sharpened surfaces, which should hopefully clean up some of Skyrim’s smeary walls and blurry rock textures. I quickly booted it up to have a look, but was stabbed by a barbarian while I was busy pushing my face into a wall :(

    hehee

    PS
"Bethesda recommend the mod to those with “a minimum of 4GB of system RAM and a DirectX 9.0c compatible NVIDIA or AMD ATI video card with at least 1 GB of RAM and the latest drivers.”

WOW is all i have to say about the HD pack  ... i watched some videos online highlighting the hd pack and they cant see a difference... but you can see it everywhere, shadows are 2-3x better, trees are 10x better, and everything just pops out more, i even restarted my guy just because i got a legit steam copy  and the price cant be beat. :D

Wow I am downloading the HD pack right now...

I noticed a HUGE FPS imporvement in skyrim. I dunno if it's the new driver from AMD or the patch 1.4. My cards was running at 40%-50% each and now they run at 80%+ each!!!! No more need of SkyBoost since it is not compatible with the new patch.

I can now fully benefit of my m18x performance :D

OK, so what do I need to get some decent FPS outta Skyrim? I just downloaded this DLC pack for Skyrim. Is that it? What about drivers for the 6970m crossfire cards? Skyrim wants to default my settings to Medium on the 1080p display. Serious?

DLC pack is not a patch and doesn't really improve performance, it gives some extra eye candy though.

I'm using the 12.2 preview drivers and playing on max with no issues.

Where do I get these drivers? I just updated the latest "dell" display drivers on their website,(8.902 driver I believe)but no difference over the older factory installed driver. Also are you running CCC? I notice the m18x doesnt have CCC installed, just the bare drivers.

Aikimox, I notice in your sig you are running 16gb of 1866 ram in your m18x. Does this show up in cpuz correctly? I recently purchased my m18x with8gb of 1866 ram, only cpuz shows it clocked at 666.7(1333). Changing the settings in the bios does nothing, I've called support and they weren't able to fix this issue either, in fact I'm waiting to hear back from them.

Sorry for the off topic post.

I got the 12.1 Official driver, everything ULTRA, and I got 55-60 fps everywhere. Skyrim set my default settings to medium too, but just click on ultra and ENJOY!

If you still get low fps, try enabling the ATI bar with RadeonPro to see GPU % load.

I really wonder why mine is clocked at 666.7. I'm starting to think maybe I shouldn't have bought this machine. The performance is great, but I've already replaced the screen, keyboard that was broken when I recieved it, ram isn't running as specified and the left fan on my m18x stays on for far too long imo. after gaming for 30minutes or so it will run on high for about 3-4 even though the gpu temp is below 55c. I've been using manual fan control, but compared to my m17xr2, this machine seems somewhat "glitchy".

Mine has the ram included that was an option when configuring the system. The support rep yesterday had me pull apart the machine and check each of the 4 sticks, kingston 1866 was listed on each. I don't have the system in front of me atm to post a screenshot.
