I also read elsewhere, at least pertaining to stability, to turn "threaded optimization" on via Nvidia Control Panel, which I have done and which I can discern no change in performance or stability. Anyone else know of this setting?

I replied to your first inquire via PM.

Concerning your last post, I think that fine-tuning settings in nvidia control panel might affect stability and performance up to a certain point, since it's the vBIOS and lower-level instructions the driver imposes that dictates how the card will behave. As suggested by Mr. Fox, there's an impression that the 320xx series focuses more on stability over performance--reason why might have experienced more downcloking and drops lately. I believe that using an earlier driver (314.22 WHQL as suggested again by Mr. Fox) and capping voltages and clocks with k-boost will allow us to enjoy better performance, and more stability under higher clocks and heavy loads.

Well I want to report a recent discovery concerning overclocking and this game. Determined to alleviate frequent CTD, I pre-maturely concluded that the source of them was GPU voltage related and flashed the GPU's to a more aggressive 1.05V vbios. I was somewhat certain that I would be enjoying a smooth gameplay experience, albeit with toasty GPU temps, but was dismayed to find that the CTD's continued with their normal regularity. I experimented with various GPU clocks, at first I tried +250 core/ +500 memory but after the first CTD dialed that back to +200/+400, and when I continued to get CTD with these clocks I somewhat knew that the overclocked GPU's were not the culprit.

I then turned my attention to the CPU and in the process of troubleshooting I made a startling discovery. It turns out that even with a more moderate multiplier profile (43,43,43,42) than the one that I can typically get away with CTD free in every other game in existence (45,45,44,43) with Flex Voltage at 8 that this is the source of the CTD. So I dialed back the multipliers to 42,42,42,41 and although I did not play long enough to ascertain the reduction of CTD, I did notice that alt+tabbing out of the game and switching between this profile setting and the more aggressive setting (45,45,44,43) via ThrottleStop resulted in the FPS going from 48 to 60 in the early level where Prophet has to navigate across a bridge, becomes discovered and is pursued by a helicopter.

I basically sat in "camouflage" mode at the beginning of the bridge and observed 48 FPS, pausing the game did not increase the FPS at all so here I paused the game and began alternating between the two aforementioned multiplier profiles. They were both set to "turbo", as I also considered that a source of the marked disparity in frame-rate.

I then began switching to less aggressive MSI Afterburner profiles, going from +250/+500, +200/+400 and even +100/+200 and the frame-rate was unaffected.

Now, it has to be said that I did not have shadows, shading or object at "very high", but only set to "high", and that it is possible that the more aggressive GPU profiles may contribute to better FPS with shadows and shader turned up but I am not positive and need to do more testing.

I do feel confident that I can conclude that this game is incredibly CPU dependent, even in areas or moments of the game when you think that it shouldn't be, say during visually intensive ones with not a lot of other processes happening.

I also need to report that the GPU temps got up to 84 C primary and 74 C secondary at 1.05V, with as can be reasonably concluded, no real measurable improvement in frame-rate or performance. The peak observed temperatures in this same stretch of game observed before the flash to the higher voltage was 77 C primary and 71 secondary, all other variables constant (fan speed, ambient temperature, CPU clock-speed etc.)

I also need to point out that the game was previously stable, with slightly higher FPS, with the CPU multipliers at 43,43,43,42, Flex Voltage: 8, GPU's: +200/+400 @ 1.0V with MSAA set to +1. It was only after I set MSAA to +2 that I began to have the instability issues.

But there is a noticeable improvement in aliasing so I intend to keep MSAA +2 and will experiment with increased Flex Voltage, say of 15, to allow me to get away with more aggressive multipliers.

I am going to flash back down to 1.0V, as the game does run with respectable quality at +200/+400 and I am not comfortable with the temps in the mid 80's long-term.

It all makes sense, and it's great that you were able to find the cause of your drivers crashes. I know for experience that going to low with Flex induces crashes, so I kept mine between 15(current) and 35(!) depending on the overclock. I found it interesting that in my case, lowering the GPU clocks does affect my FPS in game. But that doesn't take it away the fact that this game, as we have already established, it depends heavily on CPU and it could certainly distribute better its processing between CPU and GPU. Good findings, brother vulcan and thanks for sharing. I will try to adjust my settings accordingly and see the result.

Thanks Rafix. :) For those that don't know I made it past this bridge section I spoke of, that I could not earlier with lower Flex Voltage, and right when I was feeling confident that I was in the clear of CTD I got one in the foundry/nuclear reactor section that followed. So I increased Flex from 16 to 20 and will continue to experiment.

You know what would be really cool? A laptop stand that is actually an air-conditioner, so instead of just blowing ambient air at a laptop such as ours it would blow cold-air. Too bad Asetek never got their liquid cooling system off the ground and sold the patent to Dell, I would so be considering one of those right now for $700-$1k. It would be a much more affordable alternative to building or purchasing a liquid cooled desktop for quadruple the cost. I love this game, but playing it smoothly seems to require CPU temperatures that are tortuous, I am now seeing a few cores over 100 C with the increased Flex Voltage.

I should probably just save this game for the wintertime, when it will be about 20-30 F colder indoors where I am (Northwestern Nevada), but I am really into this game at the moment.

Then I guess it's time to compromise, vulcan ;) The game scales pretty well and even after lowering some settings it still looks awesome--I'm sure I'm not telling you anything you don't know already. Maybe it's time to dust Maldo mod again and play it with 7 option activated? Or were you already using it all along?

Yeah I have been away for a few days but returning to Crysis 3 I actually did exactly as you prescribe with promising results thus far. I tried to play with the previous settings again last night, SMAAx2, all settings "Very High" except, Object, Shader, and Shadow quality and even with Flex Voltage at 20 I was treated to display driver induced CTD early on and then a total system freeze-up after that. I wanted to see what kind of temperatures I could expect wearing pajamas, socks and a sweater with the AC on. It did make a big difference, about 5-8 C lower GPU temperatures (69 primary as opposed to typical peaks of 74 and occasionally 77). But after the failures I decided to reduce the settings as I was not about to increase Flex to, well I guess 35 as you have, just to run SMAAx2. Which brings me to the conclusion that even SMAAx2 is really CPU taxing. I returned to that same early-game bridge level I spoke of earlier and with FXAA that entire sequence held at 60 FPS with a much less aggressive multiplier profile (42,42,42,41 vs. 45,45,44,43 or 4.2 Ghz vs. 4.5 Ghz) This was also with Flex dialed back from 20 to 10. I also saw a reduction in peak CPU temperatures of about 5-7 C, but this could be mostly AC related. I need to make an air conditioner cooler like you did Rafix!

Truth is, FXAA just doesn't look as good as SMAAx2, but it isn't a night and day difference. I did find a TweakGuide that allows one running FXAA to overcome most of the blurriness introduced by FXAA; you need to add an entry to the system.cfg file found at C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\Crysis 3 (or whatever drive you have it on) and add "r_Sharpening = 1". You can go higher or lower, I tried 2 but it was way to sharp and values below 1 didn't seem to do much. Here is a sliding comparison shot between 0 and 1:

Crysis 3 Tweak Guide: Interactive Comparison

You can also experiment with r_sharpening in-game by pressing the tilde button (~) and entering the aforementioned commands in console, but if you wan't the changes to stick they need to be added to the system.cfg file.

Other neat changes that I made were:

g_SkipIntro = 1 (allows you to skip the intro move and Crytek sequence, which is really annoying to sit through in Crysis 2)

    and

r_FullscreenWindow = 1 (useful if you frequently alt+tab out of the game to check temperatures or what-not)

Here is the TweakGuide, its actually very comprehensive in that you can adjust just about every effect with it:

    TweakGuides.com - Crysis 3 Tweak Guide

I have refrained from using the Maldo Mod as I am trying to get into mult-player (it feels like some of the players in there are cheating, and a few of them probably are, but most are just so good you will want to cry)

So, in conclusion, I have to say that MSAA above x1 requires an inordinate amount of CPU processing power and should only be attempted if:

    A. You have a proto-type Air Conditioner rack.

    B. You have a monster liquid-cooled desktop, in which case you probably wouldn't be reading this.

You're right... Crysis, Crysis 2 and Crysis 3 all benefit from a powerful CPU and overclocking. There are not that many games that do, but this series absolutely does. XM CPU FTW.

Crysis games also benefit from faster system memory and more vRAM. Have you compared the amount of vRAM used by Crysis games compared to some of the other titles?

Thanks, vulcan. Very interesting findings, and thank you for the tweaking guide. I will try the r_Sharpening soon to see the difference. I like the way the author's of Crysis 3 tweaking guide wraps everything up, and I quote:

"If you're struggling for performance, use the customization potential in Crysis 3 to tone down some of the more subtle performance-intensive effects, keeping in mind the following tips:

The Shading, Objects and Shadows settings in particular can be quite strenuous, so lower them first before turning to other areas.
Try FXAA or SMAA Low (1x) for Anti-aliasing, as they have virtually no performance impact. If you use FXAA, you can use the sharpening advanced tweak to offset the blur.
As with most games, if all else fails to improve performance, reduce your Resolution.
Take advantage of the tweaking possibilities by making use of the command variables as described in the Advanced Tweaking section. For example, lower your in-game settings to High or Medium, then add back only those effects that you can't do without via several commands placed in the cfg files. Or choose Very High for the in-game settings, then selectively remove individual effects that you feel add little to the overall atmosphere of the game, thus improving your performance with minimal loss in image quality.

Unfortunately there is no magic bullet that will make the game run at maximum visuals with high framerates on regular hardware. To achieve its atmospheric and highly interactive game world, Crysis 3 requires lots of computing power."

I think that what he said sums the whys and hows we have struggled (and still are) so much in order to find that sweet spot setting that can allow us to enjoy the eye candy this game provides when it is maxed out.

    Good job, vulcan ;)

Thanks Rafix, yeah I don't know if its the same author but the TweakGuides are actually really useful; I have used them in the past, particularly with Skyrim.

I wanted to provide an update, I was continuing to get a CTD, but this time there was an error and notification in my task-bar of a display driver failure and recovery. I know from past experience that this can be a result of inadequate voltage so I re-flashed the cards to a 1.025 V vbios and I think this is a happy medium between 1.0 V and 1.05 V as I am no longer getting the CTD's at +200/+400 and the temperatures aren't in the mid to upper 70's, they are only about 3-4 C hotter, not 5-8. I also might be able to get away with slightly higher clocks in other games, say +250/450 or so now. I am also able to run Shader quality of Very High with no CTD thus far. So now all settings Very High except Object.

And I discovered that if you alt+tab out of and back into Crysis 3 the brightness is increased quite a bit and that you have to open the Brightness setting and at least move the slider back and forth to revert to the correct brightness level. It took me a while to figure this out on my own, and I pretty much made it nearly through the entire single player campaign with the brightness too high. Going back through the game with the correct brightness, it looks much better.

Oh and I am getting positively owned in multi-player, I don't think it was designed very well as new players, on top of having a lower skill level, don't have access to weapons, perks and accessories that take a long time to unlock (Gauss rifle, thermal scope, ability to see other players even if they're cloaked etc.)

If you play multi-player, you will notice that usually two or three players will absolutely own everyone else, with an insane KDR like 15-20/1, and you will swear they are cheating.

I think multi-player should have been designed with access to decent weapons for everyone. This is really a big deal, for example, you can drop someone with a Gauss rifle with one shot, whereas the DSG-1, unless its a headshot (good luck with that) if they have armor on it typically takes 3 body shots to drop an enemy player. I actually stopped using the Sniper class because I just get absolutely raped. I am only semi-competitive with the "Gunner" class, and when I say semi-competitive I mean maintaining a neutral or barely positive KDR.

I really wish but don't expect Crytek to address the insane imbalance in multi-player, I am still trying to get into it but its just not fun to get beat badly in every single multi-player match. At the end of every match I feel like just turning it off and playing something else or going for a walk, it really isn't fun.

And what is the result of this kind of design, a few dedicated fan-boys who picked up the game early or at launch and play it religiously, 12+ hours a day, get to beat any newcomers so badly that in the end only they (5-10% of the multi-player community) are really having fun? What a blunder. This is exactly why I only played Crysis 2 multi-player for a few hours and went on to something else. I was hoping this very serious issue was addressed with Crysis 3 but apparently the most critical thing concerning multi-player viability, not allowing players to develop god-like omnipotence, was not addressed by Crytek with all of their infinite wisdom.

And then you have the occasional hacker, like is whoever is in this recorded gameplay running around with armor on with no reduction of suit power and an aimbot or am I hallucinating?

I will probably go through the single-player campaign once more but I believe I am about done with multi-player.

Hi all, just got crysis 3 and happy to report that my 2 year old 6990 s are coping well, very high settings with the exception of shadows set those to minimum., gives me so far a steady 45 fps. Dont know ofcourse how it will perform later in game, but so far very pleased. Man, just love this machine!

IME, the beginning when you're out in the rain and a couple boss fights were the hardest scenes to run. Scenes with a lot of grass were also harder to run, but not as bad as those.

Unless shadows are THAT much of a killer, I have a hard time thinking nothing is dipping under 45fps. My 780m SLI on max (with max shadows) hits 20s in certain scenes very briefly. My old R1 with 580m SLI ran everything on "high" with about 40ish FPS.

Hey guys. I've just installed FRAPS and run Crysis 3 on my new Alienware 18. System specs:
    i74700MQ
    16GB RAM
    GTX 780m SLI

I have the game maxed out.

Before I upgraded the Nvidia driver (via Dell driver website) the game was playing very smooth.

I've installed the driver and it started to stutter. I then had a look at the config and noticed the SLI was not enabled.

I downloaded FRAPS and to my disapointments discovered the frame rate is 20 :(

Can you please help me? I am not sure if I'm doing something wrong or if my GPU is faulty. Am I wrong to assume that my system should be able to run it masxed out with at least 45fps?

    Thanks for a quick reply.

I have several times and it looks like the SLI is working now but the FPS is still crap :(

I'm also getting errors when I try to install drivers that the drivers are not compatible with my hardware.

The device manager says I have dual Nvidia 780m. I don't know what to do.

uninstall the drivers, and delete the software (you know the option when you go to uninstall from device manager)then go download the ones from DELLs website OR BETA drivers from NVidia - do not download any others.. just those, are your options ATM.

If you search, some people are saying some of the previous drivers work best, but you'll have to search for 780m drivers on the forum , sure its somewhere or someone else can link them for you its should be there for you.

Your fps should definitely be higher. I'm using the last drivers and I can still play Crysis 3 at 60, with some occasional drops to 50/55.

Here's the link to the 326.80. Make sure you activate SLI and reboot. As well, make sure you have power managment mode set to Maxmum Performance.

Hi imeek22, welcome to the AW family!

Crysis 3 is known to be a resource-eating game. However, there are quite a few ways you can tweak settings in order to enjoy smoother framerate.

Skim through this thread's various posts, you will find valuable information that I'm sure it will help you. You will get a better understanding of why the game is so demanding, how many of us had issues with it, and the ways we addressed those problems.

It's not just about the laptop's performance in this case. There are several reasons the game doesn't run smoothly on max settings at first install. Crysis 3 is a game that differently than many other titles is more CPU-bound. In order to find a happy medium and enjoy smooth framarate and eye candy you need to tweak the system and the game. The fact that you find the game choppy now doesn't mean that you have a system that cannot perform--quite the opposite actually. Go through this thread, try a few tweaks here suggested, and let us know.

Read my post above yours--we submitted at the same time. Here's a good place where to start: download the Maldo Mod for Crysis 3 > HERE

Extract the file and go through the read me file you'll find inside.

As well, read this; you'll find it quite enlightening.

And by the way, no need to call me sir, we're all brothers here ;)

Your notebook is certainly not a fail. Overclocking and modding your notebook is not something you can learn overnight. But, anytime is as good as ever to start learning.

For example, this is a good place where to start: http://forum.notebookreview.com/ali...ing-thread-learn-how-share-tips-here-170.html

Skim through it and read around. It's critical that you first get an understanding of what your machine can do.

First thing you need to learn is how to monitor your system in real time. This will allow you to check temperatures and performance on-the-fly as you apply tweaks and mods, and to troubleshoot whenever you'll need to.

Read through this thread HERE and follow the guides. Try it with Crysis 3 and take note of frequencies and temperatures.

Once that's done. Download and install Heaven Benchmark HERE. Give it a run and see how your system performs.

All of this will provide you with the basic knowledge you will need later on when you'll overclock.

Well, yes, there isn't a miracle pill and there certainly is a learning curve. You have a system that if pushed a bit should allow you to play most games at high settings, saved some compromise you'll need to make in some cases, considering that it's not a maxed-out AW 18. However, it is still a pretty amazing notebook that can perform quite nicely. In regards of my system, yes, I have to tweak and overclock (both GPU and CPU) it in order to play Crysis 3 maxed out. So, don't make the mistake to assess your system based upon its performance with Crysis 3. Install other games, play with settings and see how well the system performs. If you like shooters you have plenty of titles to choose from.

You are very welcome. That's the right spirit! Stick around, read, learn, share, ask questions. You'll see that there are plenty of very knowledgeable and skilled members here willing to help. And start from those links I sent you earlier. Learn how to monitor your system--that will be critical when later on you will overclock and tweak ;)

Hey welcome to the forums. I think you are experiencing the initial reality of PC gaming; it's not console gaming nor exactly "plug and play." However, this is part of the fun of PC gaming for many. You DON'T have to be a programmer or PC expert to learn how to properly utilize your PC and you can consider this your first adventure into the hobby. I am NOT a programmer but am able to breakdown my system, upgrade it, overclock it (with very basic knowledge), and contribute to forums regularly. I am a technology enthusiast and if you take your time to read, learn and adjust then you will be happy with your system.

My near highest level AW 18 doesn't "MAX" Crysis 3. There are scenes that dip into the 20s. However, when you learn about each game, even without modding it, you can have a graphical experience close to the highest settings and barely tell the difference between "max settings" and your config. For example, in Crysis 2, DX11 barely added anything outside of a lot of performance hits to just enable a few more prominent textures (mainly little handles sitting on top of road blocks). You would NEVER notice this unless it was pointed out.

Take your time with learning about your system. I highly recommend you DON'T go overclock or even mod your games at this time as that can actually create more performance problems if you install the mods improperly. First, download your basic system temp monitoring software such as HWinfo. Also DL FRAPS for FPS readings. Get to know the performance you are looking at after tweaking in-game settings PRIOR to modding and overclocking as that can take some work. You also want to make sure that your system is performing to 'spec' by monitoring your temps to give you an idea if you need to repaste anything. Likely, your system is just fine but you NEED to be monitoring your games ALL the time. I always have at least HWinfo running. You will learn that almost each game has in game commands that can be entered so that you don't have to run FRAPS to see how your system is playing. Briefly
Crysis 1: enable your console with the tilda key. Then enter r_diplayinfo 1 then hit 'enter.' Now you have your FPS and other info running and you aren't using the slight resource of fraps that does have some impact on in-game FPS (it can lower it very slightly).
CS:S, CS:GO, HL2 and most Valve games: tilda key (you will have to enable "developer console" in the keyboard settings in-game by ticking the "enable developer console"). After that, hit the Tilda key net_graph 1 will turn on in game monitoring. net_graph 0 will turn it off.

Most games have these in-game tools. Look them up and use them. After you are done gaming check your max GPU and CPU temps and make sure the CPU is in the 60s-70s (80s in some CPU dependent games is fine). Make sure your GPUs are ideally in the 60s-70s. 80s is also fine but those will be very demanding games with many settings on Max.

DON'T BE AFRAID TO ASK QUESTIONS! I have asked advice from many forum members; it's invaluable. Again, I am not a programmer/IT person. However over the past decade I have learned to do many things with my machines and have a blast just tweaking my system to my liking.

Finally, you will learn how choppy and slow your gaming experience has been on consoles. I am a Halo fan. Halo Reach probably had scenes running 15-20FPS FREQUENTLY...all at resolutions less than 720p. Fight Night Champion Story Mode ran probably at 20FPS...but I still loved the game :)

The more you learn about your system, the more you will appreciate it. Your system will not max out games right from the box. However you will play at settings that are at high quality and visually almost indistinguishable from the max ability; you just have to take time to learn WHICH settings to turn down to get the best performance gain for the least performance loss.

Good luck have fun and ask questions. Give yourself weeks getting to know your system and games before getting into the more advanced stuff being referenced here. One click too far into overclocking and you may be sending your system back to Depot. I hope you invested in an extended warranty. If not; make funds available to do so later. You will likely need it and benefit from the cost of the warranty. Peace.

    Hi,
My 780ms SLI overheat with this game. Have you guys experience this before? Even @ stock with SLV7 bios my GPU temps do Reach the 83-85c after playing for an hour or so.

    is this normal?

I played Metro last night battlefield 4 battlefield 3 and none of them exceed the 80c usually stay between 75c-79c
but Crysis 3 seems to really put heat on my 780ms. Just wanted to see if you guys have experience this. I am Running @ Max settings with FXAA Antialiasing. FPS 45-70

Those temps are fine, don't worry. You should start worrying when it's around 90c.

Thanks for the quick response 1nstance!

have u ran Crysis 3? I know the temps are a bit warm but probably should be fine. Just wanna make sure that 82-85c is normal after an hour of playing crisis 3.

this seems to be the only game that gets temps that high.

Hi , Just finishing Crysis 3. All settings max except shadows. My number one 6990 gets to 83 on the 4th tempsensor on GPUz The number 2 is a bit cooler average hottest 82.5 on the number 3 sensor on GPUz. using hardwareinfo 64 at 3200 rpm cools it by about 5 degrees, all this at 20 degrees in the apartment.
Pretty similar temps I had when playing Crysis 2 at all max settings

The Crysis franchise is my absolute favorite and I really loved Crysis 2 and Crysis 3. Both are quite demanding. It sounds like your system fared nicely without temps becoming too extreme.

    Sorry for the late response.

No, I didn't buy Crysis 3, I played the heck out of Crysis, Warhead and Crysis 2 Maximum Edition though. Liked all of them equally for my own reasons. Planning to buy Crysis 3 once I get my second 780M or when the 880M's are avaible (if they are compatible with my laptop of course).

It will be moderate boosts due to the power limitations of the new 18, it's not really a tweakers platform at the moment.

Saying that a pair of even stock 780Ms should be able to maintain above 60FPS at higher details.

You'll be able to run it at damn near 60fps, but probably not with every single setting to ultra. You might have to tweak the AA a bit.

Crysis 3 (the Crysis franchise in general) is one of the few extremely popular games that will gobble up all the CPU horsepower you can throw in its path. I see an average of about 10-15 FPS more with the 3920XM than I do with 4930MX, and at lower core temps than 4930MX, with both running at 4.3GHz.

It will be a smooth experience with either machine using 780M SLI... should be high enough FPS for a good experience even with an ordinary Core i7 CPU at ~3.0GHz. For best results, use FXAA and/or the MaLDo mod (offline campaign only to avoid getting banned).

Hey brother Fox, I imported your the Crysis MaLDo profile into nvidia inspector. In the wrench driver menu, when I choose the profile and hit "apply changes", then close the profile window and reopen it, it's set to "GLOBAL_DRIVER_PROFILE" again. Isn't it to stay set to the Crysis 3 MaLDo profile, or is it supposed to be like this? If it should selfactivate when starting Crysis 3, how does it now if it's supposed to use the default Crysis 3 profile that came with the driver or the MaLDo profile?

    Thx brother

It self-activates at game startup, as do all of the NVIDIA profiles. If you look on the "Global Settings" page you will see there are two options, one of which is the MaLDo mod. On the "Program Settings" tab there is Crysis 3. I am not sure what makes it different than most, but it is.
