I've had a bit of an oddity turn up turn up today, and as I've not found a thread that has a similar issue, I thought I'd ask to see if anyone has had a similar issue.

Over the last day I've notice my fans are running much higher than normal, even when the system is idling.

I'm running Windows 8.1 and once it starts up everything is normal then the fans kick on as if it running a moderate application and never quiet down.

The CPU temperature varies between 38C to 41C. The GPUs are at 42C/40C. I have two 680Ms. Everything is cool to the touch, There is no processes I can se that are taking up any CPU time. It is more of an annoyance than anything else but it seemed rather odd.

Anyone have this happen or any additional info I could provide that might help?

    Thanks!

Did you recently do a windows update. My M18xR2 was having a similar issue. Did a system restore to just before the update and the problem was gone...so there may be that.

I woke up last night to hear my alienware fans going full blast. I have a m18xR2 as well and it seemed to occur right after the windows update. The computer has been running flawlessly otherwise and still does besides the fans spinning at 100% load. If I restart the computer it seems fine for about 2 minutes than all of a sudden ramps up the fans. I tried to update my bios from V9 to V11 and that did not work. I opened it up and cleaned out some of the fans and the laptop actually worked for the rest of the night. I awoke in the middle of the night to hear them blasting once again and now I'm stuck.

Has a system restore helped at all? Thanks!

I am glad that I was not the only one that experienced this issue. Last night my fans got really loud, and after a hwinfo check they were spinning at 4500rpm with a CPU clock of 3.5GHz. I noticed this started after a Dell program called SupportAssist popped up a notification to install a driver update from Dell. I have no idea where that software came from but it was deleted as soon as it was found (My guess is it was installed by a tech when it went to the depot). Using the fan control in HWInfo I was able to get the fans back to normal, but after a few minutes they spun right back up. I decided to do a Bios flash and a power drain which so far has corrected the fan issue. I am still learning how the 3rd gen Intel i7s work (I have a 3740qm), but should by CPU clock always be that high? I expected the clocks to stay around 2.7 GHz and turbo boost when needed. Anyway for now it works.

It happened to me after windows update and every time i go on the windows update and search it comes back again so i looked around and i found that the (windows microsoft search indexer ) is using 100% of my cpu so i went to control panel search for indexing options -> advanced -> Rebuild, and that fixed my problem and my cpu usage went back to normal

still having the same problem, the rebuild option didn't do anything. Another thing to note is that only the center GPU fan is spinning, the other two are not

My cpu fans goes wild when I open chrome might be due to chrome's processes per extension.

So Rolling back to the last system restore, so far has pushed my system back to normal. CPU is floating around 52-55C with photoshop, chrome and skype active. Fans are at a much lower speed It seems like some latest update is what is causing this. I'll have to see if I can dig further to see what is going on

Also I've found that in chrome if you don't untick the " continue running background apps when google chrome is closed " it will use up your cpu and cause your fans to speedup. Go into Chrome Settings ----> Click Show Advanced Settings ----> Under System untick the Continue running background apps when google chrome is closed. That should speed up your laptop.

I thought I was the only one. I have a similar issue on my m18x in windows 7, it seems to go crazy sometimes even though the thermals are perfectly fine. It ends up cooling the radeons unnecessarily to 37 degC

Yeah it has to be an issue with one of the recent Windows updates. I had to rollback to a previous state to correct the issue. Did not have the Dell SupportAssist Agent Version even installed.
