Wow, that's huge! And it works!![]()

You can also call and negotiate with it as well, at least my rep did. As always YMMV.

Hi guys, quick question about the Wireless card options for a new M18x, are there any available cards for the M18x with WiDi or (preferably) Wireless HD support?
cheers~
Edit: Does look a bit tricky to replace by oneself so want to get the right card while ordering, my rep can't find the correct card type / parts number in his M18x build options tho. Anyone here go got it and knows the details I should give him? -
Actually, the wifi card is very easy to replace (similar to replacing the easier-to-get-to sticks of RAM). I haven't seen any WirelessHD options in the new model...not sure if they dropped support for it or just found that they weren't selling enough in the R1.
For WiDi, you'll need the Intel 2230 wireless card. It'll be slower than that Killer Wireless (300 Mbps versus 450), but supports WiDi, according to Dell's own information.
Hope that helps! -
Thanks evil_mike, did you get to order the Wireless HD card + antenna with your original R1 purchase or did you order the parts and retrofit it yourself later on?
-
Ordered with the R1

I'm also going to install a 256GB SSD; probably Crucial haven't done much research yet. I found a ton of negative comments on the 512GB which I'd prefer, but if I can find a model without so much baggage I might take a shot at one. My only question is how people handle installing software and managing drive space with SSDs. Do you dump everything but the OS on the backup HDD or what?
Also, from what I've read in other threads it looks like the 7970CF is *aboug* the same as the 680 SLI correct?
If I need to upgrade any of my options, I'll probably come down on the processor to keep the price in my range, depending what the rep can do for me. -
Hey guys I'm looking at the following configuration, and I had a couple of questions:
3rd Generation Intel® Core™ i7-3920XM
16GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 1600MHz
500GB 7,200 RPM SATA 3Gb/s (I will order 2 Intel 520 480Gb SSD from Newegg, set them up as RAID 0 in the 2 SATA 3 slots and reinstall Windows on them. I will put the 500Gb HDD on the SATA 2 slot and use for music/movies. IF THIS HARD DRIVE CONFIGURATION IS NOT POSSIBLE PLEASE LET ME KNOW! Thanks!)
Dual 2GB GDDR5 NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 680M - SLI® Enabled
Slot-Loading Dual Layer Blu-ray Reader (BR-ROM, DVD+-RW, CD-RW)
-In regards to the hard drive config is what I outlined above possible?
-I always preferred NVIDIA to AMD but I am looking for an objective opinion on which ones would last longer in terms of build quality and obsolescence. From what I have read it seems that the AMDs required more proactive work compared to NVIDIA which are more "user friendly" driver wise. I am not looking to overclock or do anything too technical just run games at full settings as well as run multiple 3D CAD programs.
Thanks in advance for your help with this! -
Hey guys
Im looking at purchasing an m18x but am loosing sleep over the video card choice. the amd 7970 offers way more bang for your buck over the nvidia in terms of power,. It costs $1000 to upgrade to the gtx 68 which only Provides a marginal performance increase over the amd. The amd sounds like the natural choice, but the driver issues have me very worried. Screen tearing, juttery screens, purple haze, I've seen all of these problems come up here.
So how common are these problems? are they the exception or the norm? Am I setting myself up for a rough ride with amd?
Thanks guys. I need to make my order either today or tommorow to take advantage of a special offer from dell -
Hello all. I am building an m18x rig for myself, and I just was looking for some input on the choices I've made
-PROCESSOR 3rd Generation Intel® Core™ i7-3720QM
I understand there is a difference between this and the 3610QM in that the latter doesn't support direct mode for virtual machines. Other than that I don't plan on overclocking, so I don't need the 3920xm. Does anyone feel the 3820qm is worth the cost increase for the modest speed improvement?
-OPERATING SYSTEM Windows® 7 Ultimate, 64bit
I picked this because I need some of the features it has over the other versions.
-MEMORY 16GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 1600MHZ
The configurator now offers 16gb of 1866MHZ, but it uses 4 DIMMS to do this. Does this mean the 16gb of 1600mhz only uses 2 of the DIMM's? Is there any noticeable increase for moving to 1866 RAM?
-HARD DRIVE 256GB SSD SATA 6Gb/s
I have some other non SSD drive(s) to add to the system as space permits. I wonder what ever happened to the mSATA boot drives they used to offer. Now I only see a 32gb mSATA cache drive option.
-VIDEO CARD Dual 2GB GDDR5 NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 680M - SLI® Enabled
With all the complaints regarding 7970m support I feel I need to choose this option. Does anyone think that this hasn't been around long enough for people to complain, or is nVidia really better about driver updates for laptop GPU's
-WIRELESS + BLUETOOTH Intel® Centrino® Wireless-N 2230 With Bluetooth 4.0
I don't have a wireless N router of the speeds necessary for the killer N to be useful, and I don't need QoS features.
-INTERNAL OPTICAL DRIVE Slot-Loading Dual Layer DVD Burner (DVD+-RW, CD-RW)
I already have an external USB Blueray writer, so I just stuck with that option
I also went with 1 year of advanced protection. I know you can extend warranty once you have the machine. Is it prohibitively more expensive to upgrade warranty after purchase? and is the dedicated tech support in the US actually necessary?
Thank you for any help you can give. I look to start getting quotes for this setup later today. -
-
remember a bad experience is repeated to 10-15 people, a good goes mostly untold... -
I've had both. My 7970's worked great, but I heard all the horror stories and assumed at night my cards would hunt villagers so I returned it. Thankfully my rep let me get the same spec with 680s for a bit over $100 extra so I didn't mind.
At stock it's literally the same performance. It's worth the little extra I paid but $550 extra is laughable for no gain. -
Hi everyone, am new here, My son is a US marine and just ordered a new AW R18x2 and since I get to play with it for a few days when it gets here I figured I would see if i cant get a decent benchmark on it(its EDD is 8/9). so how did he do price wise? I'm guessing he didn't apply what he read here, though, and just clicked the best options in each category when he configured his R2. Not being critical, but there is lots of advice here on what and what not to buy to save some money.
He probably could have saved about $1000 (or more if he did some of the upgrades himself). But, it will be The Best when he gets it, and that's what's important!
I'm sure they'll be plenty of shooter games on it, eh? -

Can get an m18x w/ 3610qm, 8GB, 750GB HD, 660m for $1100. Good price? I have seen some with similar configs sell for $1800-$2k, but this is really just like a lenovo y580 with a fancy shell and alien badges... it doesn't have what makes the m18x so superior, namely sli/xfire and xtreme CPU. of course you will not find any of those m18x configs for $1100... kind of a coin flip...
with the 660m, what will I need to OC it to to achieve 675m performance? I have heard that card is kind of a dog, so not sure what to expect in this department. -
Those that are considering purchasing an M18x with 7970M CrossFire BEWARE. Read this first. Unless you've got lots of patience and lots of luck, spend the extra cash for 680M SLI or spend the same amount for 675M SLI. Based on the poll is this forum, the customer satisfaction rating is low. As of the time of this post, 37% are not satisfied with 7970M CrossFire. Look around the web and you'll find LOTS of unhappy customers with other computer brands with 7970M installed.
Remember, if you decide to go ahead with buying it that you were warned. If you have time to cancel and reorder an M18x with 675M SLI or 680M SLI, do it while you can. You'll thank me later.
For those that are blessed to have good working 7970M graphics cards, we're very happy you did not receive defective parts. The GPU is very potent if you're lucky enough to get a pair that work correctly. -
Looking at the m18x r2
Is it worth ordering the CPU pre-overclocked to 4.1 or can I get the 3.8 and do it myself?
Are all the XM CPUs capable of the overclock or do dell cherry pick CPU's
Is it easy to do yourself? -
It is easy to do yourself. The cost is for a service to be performed and the machines are otherwise identical.

It's funny how personal preferences can vary so much. I cannot stand the chiclet style keyboards and really love the M18x keyboard. They look nicer, but I prefer the feel and function of an ordinary keyboard over the chiclet style. But, that's what makes the world go 'round.
My wife hated a laptop she had with a chiclet keyboard and it was one of the reasons. Another was a really crappy touchpad, and the M18x touchpad is very good... well, as good as a touchpad can be, LOL. -

Hi,
I am ready to order my M18x-R2 with following config:
M18X-R2 - Black
i7 3720QM
16GB Ram (from Dell 2x8GB 1600MHZ)
256 SSD (from Dell as Samsung 830 is quite good)
Nvidia GTX680M SLI (no AMD/ATI for me for the next 100 years)
BluRay DD
Intel Wireless2230 (as I want to use WiFiHD)
2 Year Warrenty
2 Year Accident
TactX Mouse
Win7 Professional
Last questions:
1.) Do you expect a GTX685M?
2.) Is the Vbios that unlooks the full power of the GTX680 official or just an overclock tool?
3.) When do you expect the 2nd Gen IvyBridge (eg. i7 3740QM) as I don't neet to order today or next week but within the next 2 months would also be ok.
4.) Didn't find any official Nvidia GTX680M SLI drives yet - will this become an AMD/ATI Story or are they just on their way - will there be better support?
Any other advices appreciated.
Best regards
Nathan -
Hi guys,
First time posting, although I've been lurking around for quite a while now
I've been looking at purchasing an AW m18x R2 to replace my terribly outdated and frankly inadequate macp), and have run into some questions that I can't answer myself due to my inexperience with things like this.
My budget is about 4.5k, although living in Australia (we get robbed over here) that doesn't give me as many options as one might hope.
I notice that several options have been omitted as well, for example I can't get 7970 in Xfire (not that I'd touch ATI) or choose to have a single GPU.
I really want this laptop to last me around 4 years, if it can still play games at that point (frames>qlty) that'd be awesome. The main thing I want to do is play games, I won't be using this at work so I won't be doing any multitasking or video/audio editing.
At the moment the two builds that I am seriously considering are as follows:
Build 1
i7-3720QM 2.6GHz processor
8GB 1600MHz DDR3 RAM
1TB 7200 RPM HDD (Raid 0)
Geforce GTX 680m SLI
Killer Wireless- N 1103
8x DVD + /-RW Drive
Build 2
i7-3720QM 2.6GHz processor
8GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM
256 GM SSD
Geforce GTX 675m SLI
Killer Wireless- N 1103
8x DVD + /-RW Drive
Alienware OptX AW2310 23" Full HD Widescreen
Unfortunately the SSD upgrade is around $700, so I was thinking (as somebody with absolutely NO experience with modifying laptops or desktops) that would it be worth going for the 680m and then going to the SSD later? Is it an overly simple process or is it not advisable with such an expensive machine?
It is so annoying that there isn't an option to upgrade to a 120hz screen on the m18x, it's almost like they're trying to make me choose between the ability to reach 100+ FPS and the ability to display it
Anyway, any help/advice/anything would be greatly appreciated. -

Welcome to the forum, Valkorum!
From what you say above, I would certainly go with build 1 for longevity. This is because the 680m is vastly superior to the 675m (basically, a rebadged 580m) and will last you for a considerable length of time in terms of handling tomorrow's games. I would not throw $700 at a Dell SSD - you can buy one FAR cheaper aftermarket....if they aren't as cheap in AUS, you could look at BundleBox to buy at US prices and save a small fortune.
I noticed that you have an external monitor in build 2 - again, something that can be bought afterwards. If you have any cash left over, from build 1, toss it in a pot for the external as and when...just like the SSD.
The main thing to get right when configuring is CPU and GPU - as you plan on mainly gaming with no CPU intensive tasks, the 3720 will be a perfect fit. Gaming is not really that CPU intensive but more GPU intensive and the 680m (or 7970m) are much more powerful cards - I also think AMD is getting a bit better but I appreciate your lack of enthusiasm given recent events.
To see if you can reduce the overall cost, it may be worth you having a look at this thread: http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware/669327-alienware-sales-assistance-thread-redux.html - they do have the ability to deal with non-US/Canada buyers now - one of the Dell rep's from that thread should be able to route you to a EMEA rep to help you with some discount. -
Thank you for the prompt reply!
So the 675m really is yesterdays technology then? Suppose that explains the vast contrast in price between it and the 680m
As for getting the SSD aftermarket, how difficult do you think I'd find it to actually install the SSD? IIRC SSDs are smaller than HDDs, would there be any sort of discrepancy there? As I mentioned above I don't have any experience actually tinkering with desktops/laptops, I did watch a few M18x teardowns and while it didn't appear that complicated things could well chance in practice.
Thanks for the link to that thread, I had no idea it existed - I'll definitely check that out. -

Hi there fellow forum-ers (if that can be told!). I'm glad I've joined this handy and reliable forum. Lots and lots of interesting read to say the least! Spent many nights reading all the interesting conversations! I do know a thing or three on the PC tech since I do work on the IT field so, I'm gonna cut to the chase and ask what's been haunting me on the last days.
1- Since I'm from Canada, would there be any problem if I do order from Dell Alienware United States? Surprisingly, the pricing is cheaper on the USA site and the CDN vs USD ratio is pretty much the same at the moment! Also, I wouldn't have to deal with the McAfee bloatware that the Dell Canada forces upon the customers, sadly.
2- Is there any ways to add more Hard Drive from Dell? I would guess this matter would be needed to ask a Dell rep isn't? (I do want the 512GB SSD drive from the configuration site and add 2 750GB HDD, without RAID.)
3- I read here and there that the brand used by Dell AW for the 512GB SSD drives are from Samsung. Can that be confirmed? I also noticed that the price dropped considerably on the Dell site (650$ USD) for the Samsung SSD mentioned earlier which is why I would want to take it right away from Dell and let it be covered on the warranty.
4- The Green Onions Supply AG2 Anti-Glare Screen Protector for Dell Alienware... is it really worth the purchase? If so, is there anyways to uh, have Dell conveniently install it for you? Not that I'm lazy but since I intend to fork a big amount of hard earned money, that option would be delighted as getting a system all ready to go out of the box is the way I intend to have.
5- Noticed that actually, the Microsoft Office 2012 Suite (when I ain't gaming, that suite is more than handy!) ain't select-able on the custom AW M18X. Could it still be purchased from Dell AW or would I have to resort at another option?
6- Seems to be a great timing to purchase a M18X AW laptop as the Dell USA website have a 15% discount right now. Is it possible to add more coupons and will they stack with the discount already in place? Or, any other ways to uh, have a better deal/discount?
7- Seen a few comments about customers buying their system from Xoticpc.com ... would you guys/gals recommend acquiring the AW laptop there? I did noticed more customization options but no discount/special deals whatsoever... which seems to be a deal breaker on my side... especially if they charge more to ship to Canada!
8- Since the Nvidia 680M launched recently, any idea if it would be best to wait for a "685M or 690M"? If so, any thoughts or speculation on some time frame for the launch of the next Nvidia card?
9- Read that the AW M18X doesn't have a native 3D screen and require an external 3D monitor. Question is... any of you fellow gamers, that actually played with a 3D monitor and the Nvidia 3D Glasses? Is the experience really worth the purchase?
Ah, many questions... I know! Theses should be covering all that I had in my mind for the last days... and I do intend to purchase an AW M18X R2 soon!
Thanks in advance for any and all feedback given!
You guys/gals rock!

Hello, i got some questions as well, but first ill try to give some help to the above post ^^
1,2,5 try contacting dell usa rep for detailed info
3 id suggest purchasing your own separate ssd's and installing them yourself, its really easy, and saves some $
4 take a look at http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m17x/591707-review-green-onions-supply-m17x-r3-ag2-anti-glare-screen-protector.html for reference
6 there is a 50$ off coupon on dells site, make sure to use epp for additional 2% off and try cashback sites
8 no idea but im not waiting, im jumping on 680mif i choose nvidia vs ati
i hope my input helped a little bit, now my problem:
i got quoted 2980$ +tax for m18x r2, i7-3920XM, 6gb ddr3, crossfirex 7970M, 500gb hd, killer 1103, orion backpack.
now, it will be same price, so should i keep 3920xm and dual 7970m or take 3820qm and dual 680m is what bothers me...
ocing my 3920xm also gives me higher ram memory clocks right?
i searched but is there really so much trouble and inconvenience with dual7970?

Hello
I wonder if you connect the alienware m18 with two gtx 680m by mini display port on the monitor BenQ XL2420T will be able to activate the 120hz? -
Especially since Dell AW seems to install a Samsung 512GB and that SSD seems to suit my needs... unless any of you would advice me to get a better brand of SSD, I would look into it!
As for your questions, I did read many people having problems with ATI 7970, concerning the poor driver support and honestly, that is not new coming from AMD/ATI. On my own personal experience, I owned about 3 Desktop ATI GPU, the cards themselves are really nice tech but again, having a poor driver support kills the purpose of having a powerful GPU. Now typing to you with my average-ish ACER Aspire 7745G laptop, it came with an ATI GPU and let me tell you that ever since the huge fuss with the RAGE game that made me wait about 5 months to play it, I swore to myself never buy/acquire another ATI card... even if their better/cheaper than Nvidia. I'm done with ATI for good and with Nvidia, I never experienced serious problems! I ain't much of a loyalist since I did tried both side of the fence but as you can read now, I did experienced more problems with ATI than Nvidia.
Hope my input could give you some light then again, it all depend on your case if your willing to fiddle around with unstable ATI drivers or fork more money for a more stable Nvidia drivers.
So I could get a decent discount on the M18X from Dell Canada? I'd be curious to see how much of a discount I'd have since the same configuration setup I did with both Dell USA and Dell Canada, the USA is a LOT MORE cheaper than the Canadian one. And, with the current 15% discount, not so sure if Dell Canada could match the same deal.
Any idea how many posts I would require to be able to send/receive PM's? It's not like I'd want to spam the channels here and there... hehe -
SAVINGS TIME:
im working on savings for my purchase, and at the moment it looks pretty good:
discount 15% on purchase over 3999$ (possible to get on purchases over 3599$)
discount of 2% for university students
discount 50$ off purchase 1499$ or more coupon at dells site
200$ student offer dell egift card or an xbox360
5% dell egift card for advantage members (free&easy signup)
5% cashback for dell purchases
all of the above are stackable, so enjoy -
Of those, can use a few only since I ain't a student no more...
discount 15% on purchase over 3999$ (possible to get on purchases over 3599$)

200$ student offer dell egift card or an xbox360
5% dell egift card for advantage members (free&easy signup)
5% cashback for dell purchases
Still, that's already 25% off with that 50$ off... I'm liking what I'm seeing here! I'd have to check if the dell egift card would apply for Canadian customers too... same with the cashback on dell purchases... -
-
17% off... well that ain't too bad... if I can find a way to enlist to that Preferred Account, I could save some more.
However, the total amount is around 2k more on Dell Canada... but I can order the Office Suite Pro 2012 there unlike the USA.
There is a 250$ off also in effect for the M18X at Dell Canada so it is stacking well! -

PPS. On Dell Canada, the Subtotal was at least one thousand more than Dell USA... so you can see why I'm reluctant to purchase the AW laptop from Dell Canada...
On a last thought, there was a question that went unanswered previously and I would like to know if anyone played a few games with the Nvidia 3D Glasses. I would like to know if your experience is worth purchasing a 3D monitor and the Nvidia 3D glasses.
Thanks! -
dude, thats a good machine but you are wasting too much money, be smart man!
oh well, not my pocket.
im getting my machine for much less. -

As for the rest, I'll keep it that way for sure...
However, if you meant the Dell Canada... well I could save tons as their site is overpriced compared to Dell USA... which that is totally absurd if you ask me! Worst... I'd be forced to deal with that annoying McAfee AntiVirus... apparently, I cannot request it off...
Guess that means I'll have to do a clean install myself! -

Hey guys, I've got a question regarding buying M18x-R2. First i would like to start off with the the problem I face when I want to buy M18x. I live in Malaysia and Alienware Malaysia does not offer M18x here, so I have to go for Powernotebook as they say they can ship to M'sia. But there is something I concern about is the warranty. This is because i will buy it from US(Powernotebook) and what if there is defects with the machine and i need to send back for the warranty. Should i send it back to US? or is there any other way so I don't need to send it so far away just for warranty. Thx in advance.

Typical. I've just tried to put together my dream build on the Alienware U.K. site and it appears that the 680m (both single and SLI) is missing from the list of graphics cards.
Maybe when it reappears it'll have a discount! Ahem. -
