Has any one tried to put the nvidea 980 (laptop) class in a Alienware yet to see if it would work? I am curious if it is possible.

The desktop 980 MXM gpu demands more energy than the common 980M board, and for that there's a connector that grants addicional power in gpu that's not existing in current Alienware boards... maybe a DIY work like a homebrew internal cable to try pushing power somewhere in motherboard or PSU would be possible, dont know even if would be worth the effort.

I would love to develop this crazy idea
the problem is the space?
Any ideas?
Imagine SLI GTX 980 over R2.___________

The BIOS does not even have proper support for a 980M. Somebody would have to be filthy rich to spend money on the GTX 980 GPU (super expensive) to gamble on getting it to work in the M18xR2. I think it would be better to just buy a machine that properly supports it and has a more powerful CPU than the M18xR2 can support. 6700K is a lot more powerful than Ivy XM and runs much cooler.
As [Nikos] said, space is a problem. The part of the GPU that makes it wider is on the side of the GPU facing the back plane of the chassis in the primary PCIe slot. The PCB would encroach into the space occupied by the heat sink radiator and I doubt it would fit even with extensive modding, and if it did, keeping it cool enough to be useful may present an even greater challenge.[Nikos] likes this.
