I see that you've created a separate thread for it now! :D I'll just post my thoughts again here I guess:

I think the M17xR3 is the perfect balance at the moment between portability and maximum performance from a laptop. Even though the M17x is already considered heavy in laptop standards, it's going to be much more "portable" than the M18x is going to be, while still giving top tier performance at a great price.

For one, 17.3" is plenty of desktop space already, and a single 6970m is able to crank out maximum settings in all the latest games today. Although an 18.4" screen is nice, and 6970m Xfire sounds drool-worthy, I think it's a bit overkill for a laptop. Not to mention the 12cell battery is going to add to the burden of the already bulky M18x.

Edit: and yeah, as katalin_2003 pointed out, I'm sure the M17xR3 and M18xR1 are targeted at completely different populations, and each hold their own niche.

I feel pretty much the same way. They call these desktop replacements but I think the m17x is still fairly portable. The m18x, on the other hand, is really going to be pushing it. I bet that thing would suck the battery dry in no time with crossfire 6970s, but on the other hand I doubt you'd ever launch an application that utilized both cards off the umbilical.

You cant really compare the two now. The M18x is obviously set to be the new highest tier laptop since the m17x r3 is essentially an m15x with a 17" screen option now with no dual cards and no extreme proc. The r3 was "dumbed down" to make room for the M18x like we knew months ago. If all the threads didnt get deleted you can read about it.
A better comparison would have been M17x R2 and M18x, and the M18x still better blow us away.

im not sure whether to go with a r3 or m18x when it comes out, because i am selling my r2, even though its awesome. i think ill wait and see what type of specs will be available with the m18x before i come to a conclusion

That's probably your best bet considering how difficult it is to cancel an order with Dell's customer service.

    its strange... now they have m11x, m14x, m15x, m17x and m18x.

Prolly in near future, m15x and m17x might be discontinued.

Though i ordered myself a M17X r3 already.. should be receiving next week.

Dell may also try to guard their m17x model from competitors.. they might have introduced m18x to distract the competitors, so manufacturers like clevo, asus etc would focus on 18inch laptop while reducing their development and focus on 17inch laptop... and probably in 2012 or end of this year we'll see a new m17x with dual gfx etc..

What "18X" are you guys talking about? This is a really off-the-wall thread. Show me the "18X" and we'll talk. Until then, you're just making noise.

It's apparently on the Canadian Dell site, so I don't think it's really noise anymore.

I just wish they'd pack the m17x into a 16" platform... That and throw a express card slot in it so I could do Vidock...

There was a link to the configuration screen in the Alienware general forums but I can't find the link again or it may have been temporarily taken down by Dell. I was able to configure it earlier though, but it didn't have many options available this morning so I'm sure it's still a work in progress thing.

i must say WOW! only if it was same size & weight as R3 I would buy that! But seriously, tats too much of power i guess. Also, take note: 3d requires 3d TV or any other external device.

PS: I like the Green FX color. looks damn cool...might keep my R3 on that for few days when I get it :D

Well this thread shouldn't even still be open.

Like the mods have said.. until its on the DELL . com public site, it goes in the speculation thread.

There was a real configuration screen, but it's been taken down since this morning. Semantics I guess but I really don't think this is just speculation anymore.

What else is there to say other than what's already been said?
    1. Aluminum (& heavy)
    2. 18"
    3. Dual GPU
    4. XM CPU

vs. none of the above in 17x-r3

Everything about it is full of win....but for someone like myself, an 18.4 laptop is a little more than we'd care to tote around. I applaud Alienware/Dell for not making a new dramatic design that puts our current(M15x, M17x/R3) to shame. From a cosmetic stand point I feel that the M18x fits in nicely with current and previous models.

It's lame that Dell went with a full on plastic approach for the R3 like they did with the M11x. It's probably from all the negative feedback they received that they went with AL for the M18x.

    This.

I was VERY hesitant on even getting my M17x R3, I was afraid it would just too big, but I came to realize, for the work I am doing and all the lugging around it will be put through... the better off I am with a 17"er..

Since the 18x is not on the Dell USA site, you can continue to use the speculation thread.

There really is no comparison between a single and dual GPU system. As many have stated, single and dual GPU systems address different market segments.
