So I just grabbed another M18x R2 from a guy on Facebook Marketplace today. It cost me $650AUD ($450USD). It’s pretty basic with a 3740QM and dual 675M’s but I’ll get her purring.
The only issue I can see so far is some of the keyboard backlights aren’t working but I have a spare keyboard which should hopefully fix that.
I think this one will get a gloss white paint job.

Just reinstalled Command Center and all the backlights seem to be working fine. The last owner must have had 2 zones turned to black.

I think it should. Just flashed the unlocked BIOS so I may try to grab a 980M or 1060.

According to the seller and confirmed by @Rengsey R. H. Jr. in another thread it works in M17X R4, so theoretically it should work in M18X R2 but no one has dared test it :)

I can’t even pay my mortgage this week after getting this M18x so it won’t be me testing it out. I thought it drew too much power.

If it was around 500 I would smuggle it in, but at 850ish I cant justify it even to myself! :)

I think the MXM port goes up to 180W so if its TDP is 150W then it should be fine...on paper...

It’s $1100 for me so that’s way out of my league. Price per performance isn’t there

it should work. But with that tail on that card , you would probably need to remove some ports on the mobo and cut the chassis in the M18X R2.

It should shouldn't it, have a look at the below photos, may even get away with not having to mod the chassis, but the ports definitely do seem to be in the way...but cant know for sure until tried physically.

    Didn't GTX 1080 have throttling issues in M17xR4 and AW 17 R1?

I would think we would hit similar power issues in M18x series.

If you use something like 680M you can pull all the power you want through overclocking, but using these newer cards seems to have their own power limiting issues. Might be some BIOS issue.

You might be right, but the seller said it's running a 115W vbios so it shouldn't throttle, and if it does throttle in a similar fashion that the 1070 does, then the restart trick should work there too (hopefully).

My m18xr2 has cost me £750 thus far, if I was gonna shell out another £750 for the Zotac 1080 that would take the total spend to £1500, and for that money I can probably get a gaming laptop with the same or better GPU and a much better CPU...or a SFF PC like a Zotac EN72080V with a 9th gen CPU and RTX 2080...so yeah...at this price point it is too expensive for me.

Yeah it's pretty hard to justify it. I just forked out $100AUD for a new interposer from some random Chinese website (so I'll probably never receive it).
I've definitely spent too much on this old girl over the years.
I bought it from the Dell Outlet back in 2012 for $2100AUD and then bought two 780M's from Eurocom for about $1500AUD and then the 3920 for about $500.

EDIT: Plus the 1070 I just got for $660AUD

After work tonight I'm going to grab some more gloss white paint and start the respray process. Pictures to follow!
Since I'm going for white and the color on the alien head can't be changed, I think I'll mod it so it glows red instead.

While I was installing Windows 10 it was getting hot under the keyboard. I had no idea how blocked it was in there. I’m going to use this GPU heatsink for my 1070 machine as the plate is nice and clean. My other one is a little discoloured.
Anyway, she’s stripped, prepped and first coat of primer down.

I definitely popped her cherry. I needed some decent force to get the heatsinks off the GPU's.
