You can only get 6Gb/s with SSD, correct me if I'm wrong.
-
Even tho you can get with Seagate momentus XT2, Buy why do Dell UK advertise 750GB SATA 6Gb/s even they are not providin same :|
-
If any of you CFX/SLI guys are looking for a 330W adapter at a pretty good price, I bought a new one from this guy - link - and he accepted a "Best Offer" of $114.99 (that's with free S&H). That's the lowest price on eBay and cheaper than buying the (insufficient, but working) 240W with your system from Dell!
He says it is authentic and OEM/original and he has good feedback, so it looks pretty good. I'll post if it arrives and there are problems...but with eBay's Buyer Protection all should be good. -
Wait, the power supply I get with my system isn't powerful enough to operate my system?
That's a problem.
EDIT: my M18x R2 invoice has this on it:
331-6854 1 Alienware M18x 330W A/C Adapter
So that should be fine right? -
I meant that they only offer a 240W if you want a 2nd AC Adapter during the ordering process. I wanted to buy a 2nd.
-
Considering Dell, directly, sells them for $99.99 here why would you want to pay more and buy from an untrusted 3rd party on ebay?
PS. Oddly, the link above goes to the same battery but at $144.99. If you go to dell.com and go to laptops and accessories and choose batteries and power and choose the M18x, it takes you to a $99.99 330W AC Adapter.
The $144.99 has the same part number as the $99.99 so not sure why the discrepancy. -
That link says they are $144.99 when I go there.
-
Says $144.99 on the Dell site. I paid $114.99 by submitting a "Best Offer" to the seller. Plus, Dell charges tax and shipping.
-
Go to Dell and choose laptop accessories and then batteries and power and choose your M18x. You'll see a $99.99 330W AC adapter with the same part number as the $144.99. Confused why there are two different prices.
-
You can also search dell.com using the part number 331-2429 and it comes up with the $99.99 one.
-
You're right. Ah well. Probably ends up being the same price after tax + shipping. I had asked for a link to this before and no one responded so I figured it wasn't easily available on Dell.com! Doh!
-
Dell shows free shipping (even free next day shipping) on this item. I put one in my cart, logged in, and began checkout. $0 shipping.
-
Yep, I see that. $7.50 cheaper after tax! Doh.
-
Hmmm...just checked my Dell Premier account (reseller) and they're $71.99, free shipping. I might just get a couple!
-
lol...awesome. Sell one to me on eBay for $114.99!
-
anything about 680m yet? should be out this week right? or next week..
-
It's "announced" this week or next, I think. Full release would not be until July, at the earliest.
-
This "7 day no replacement" rule is complete and utter horse hockey. Rub that pixel with your thumb and see what happens. Might just be a stuck pixel instead of dead. If you really want the system swapped for a pixel, stick to your guns and keep hammering politely away. Make sure they know you know you have the return as an option.
Having said that, I'd personally just take the screen swap parts only and do it myself. I don't trust most people to touch my Alienware (well, if I had one). -

So I received my AMD Dual 2GB 6990's today. However the technician who was to come out and install it, and bring the rest of the parts, heat-sink, fans and crossfire cable never showed up. As it is Friday, I see i will have to wait until Monday. Can I for the weekend install just one 6990 using the heat-sink and fan that came with my Nvidia 460m ?
Thanks. -
Hey Bill, nice to see you around buddy, Well here you did catch me wrong
Ive never mentioned that my new system havin a dead pixel. Ive did mention on my thread (m18x R2 screen quality), that so far ive found three problems 1) side metal chassis wont completely fix with system as there is big gap at both side, 2) Touch pad vibrates to much, also it sense many clicks even tho with one touch and clicks stuck, 3) 0 Num. key its not properly attached to keyboard base,as its squeeze with side cover. So Dell Cus. tech. advice me that metal chassis (as cosmetic fault) its not easily fixable.
-
Will alienware trust the consumer to fix it themselves though? Especially something seemingly complicated like a screen replacement...

just got my m18x r2, so far i love the the new hardware
however it amazes me to see dell not including full copies of alienrespawn and syncup on such expansive model.........not a good way of getting returning customer if you ask me -
somethings have been taken out, unlike the previous R1. hat and stickers arent included, i donno about other things but be sure to expect somethings missing.
also tbh, when you really do things with speed, you wouldnt use alienrespawn anymore. everything including drivers and image back up will probably done via usb and a program called macrium reflect =), much MUCH faster. i threw away my restore CD and bunch of other crap i dont need lol. -
You can create your own disks just go the alien respawn it only takes 2 disks then you will have the factory copies if you want to put your system back to factory settings.
-
Having personal experience with such a question here, I can, with certainty, say you may not discuss such things here.
-
Ok. Thanks for the heads-up Iancorp. Will edit my previous post

Nice find, WaR. +1 Rep for that. I'm glad we allow discussion on the subject now. I'm sure there are plenty of people that are interested in playing with it.
The novelty of Linux has pretty much worn off for me and it would be nice to have a new tinker-toy to discuss in the Alienware threads. Would we calling an "Alientosh" or what? I'd love this sitting on flights next to the fanboys. It would be worth having if for no reason other than irking them.
SO, anony-moose... I didn't see what you originally posted. Any experience with this hack that you would like to share with us? -
Yeah, too bad the announcement came well after I earned a warning for it, back in 2009...
-
besides, what have they added since r2?
how is the screen, keyboard, webcam, function etc. -
It depends on what your order, bro. Price can range from $1,999 for a base model up to more than $4,000 for everything maxed out. You can see all the options available using the online system configuration tool. The M18x R2 has the same display chassis, keyboard, touchpad, I believe the same webcam, etc as the M18x R1. There are a few extra features (mSATA plus 3 drives is one of the few major changes) and a newer generation chipset, CPU and GPU options.

Yeah, on one of my previous desktop custom rigs (Asus Rampage II Extreme with Core i7 920), I had quite a journey getting Snow Leopard retail disc installed. Was tempted to give up and go with a distro but that would've made it impossible to receive proper updates, would've crossed the legality border, plus I couldn't very well return the retail DVD to the Apple store. I couldn't just tell the Apple "geniuses" that I wasn't able to get it to work with my PC
It was a learning experience. In all my years fooling around with Linux, I never learned as much about non-Windows command line as I did with my Asusintosh project. So much command line interface for a system that's supposed to "just work"
I gave up on Hackintosh after that rig crapped out because the instructions to install it are different for every motherboard and most of it is guesswork if your mobo isn't a more well known one. The Asus board had a boatload of tutorials but not my Z68 lower-end Asus board.
I'm interested in it again now with the thought of putting OS X on a laptop with at least 2x the specs of the fully-configured MacBook Pro. Still waiting for the GTX 680m to be released before pulling the purchase trigger but once I get my M18x, I plan on at least trying hackintosh to compliment my already-planned OS tri-boot (Win7, Windows Server and Linux). Better still, the config I have planned for my Alienware only costs ~$500 more than the fully-decked MBP
-
how good are the m18x screens?
120hz?
i heard higher the better -
your eyes wont be able to tell the difference.
-
Nice to see the rules have changed here. Maybe having a more "common" place to discuss will advance the science. I was "into" it a couple years ago, and when all was said and done, I'd always have something that just wasn't quite a Mac. There was always compromises to be had. Days of my life I'd never get back, and more to lose making my Hackintosh work again after Apple updated their OS with some patch or another. It was a never ending chase. It was fun, though, in the beginning, so I suppose it was worth it.
In the end, as my signature shows, I took the easy route.
-
The screens on the M18x R1/R2 are 60hz. It would be great if they went to 120hz - but probably not until the 680m is released (because of nvidia's big push towards 3D with OEMs). That would make me sell my (as yet received) M18x - a 120hz screen. It's awesome for multiplayer...so buttery smooth.
-
The problem is that D/AW don't push to get 120Hz 18" screen in the construct pipe :/
Actually if this screen was already available, I probably already have a full spec m18x R2
@Bill
Is that possible to you to know approximatively what should be the difference cost between the actual m18x screen and an hypothetical 120Hz High resolution screen ? -
It would probably be a pretty big jump because they would be building it from the groud up. Would likely have to wait a couple generations for the price to balance out.
-
Not a full start from the ground, every technologies are here from a while, just need to design one and convince a construct pipe to make the job.
But in the end many people that buy an m18x have no problem with money
In any case I would pay the price without worry of a 120Hz screen with higher resolution. -
what u guys think?
how much did you spend on ur alienware? -
Personally I have regret the decision to go skimp on warranty multiple times, but it was not only until recently when kepler and ivy bridge for desktops were released have I actually considered chipping my m18x to build a desktop.
But then again, this will never stop happening, and I should just be happy with what I have
-
No regrets... best system I have ever owned, hands down. When it's time for an upgrade, I will not hesitate to spend another $4.5k on Alienware's M18x equivalent, assuming it still comes with dual-GPU and an anodized aluminum chassis and lid.
-
No regrets about my baby. I think the only thing I would have regretted was getting an expensive Vaio back then. Could have put the money invested in that into upgrades for my baby.
-

Welcome to NBR, duce110!!
Congrats on your new machine, she's a beauty !
If you wanted additional storage, a 2nd large storage drive is a great idea - many owners have done exactly the same thing. As you seem to have a nice little Dell giftcard winding its way to you, you may want to use it for that exact purpose - alternatively, you could look around and probably grab a nice large 750gb drive for less than you would pay Dell for one.
WD Scorpio black seem to be a very popular choice here on the forums.... -
Perfect timing - tomorrow my M18x R2 arrives and also my parts return (HDD/SSD/RAM) from Mythlogic (that I had sent them to build a laptop with) will arrive - so I can build out the beast to spec tomorrow.
Here's hoping Dell QC doesn't let me down! I have no idea what I will do if I have to move away from the M18x R2...I guess I'd go back to Mythlogic and wait for the 680M! -
Or still go with the M18xR2 and most likely the upcoming 680m
Reports are flowing about that card here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/gaming-software-graphics-cards/658185-amd-7970m-vs-gtx-680m.html -
Thanks for the link! Well, my problem would be Dell quality control (QC) letting me down again (last year it was with the M14x) - so I would not return to the M18x R2 even with the 680M.
I'd have to "suffer" with just one card but a flawless laptop upon receipt from a Clevo reseller like Mythlogic!
Anyway - all of that doesn't matter - M18x R2 arrives tomorrow and I am optimistic!!!
-
Thanks for the help steviejones133!!
I looked up the WD scorpio black and it looks like i can get one for a good deal!
Thanks again
