Any owners have any complaints over the size of the M18x? Or can speak to the quality of the screen?

For you owners out there, what are some ways I can save money on my upcoming purchase? I've read and heard about some people who get anywhere from 15% to 35% off their sub-total - how have people done this? I am eligible for a student discount, but this is only a $200 gift card, and I have no idea when it arrives. If anyone could tell me about the gift card arrival times, I would be grateful.

    Thank you.

    Hi Guys,

strange problem i had with my m18xr2...i was having bsod issues.... the debug file showed that it was mcafee, nvidia, tcpip etc which caused it.... but it was actually the PRINTER HP PHOTOSMART 5510 which was causing the bsod...i figured it out as the first bsod came when i connected the printer and then the bsods stopped when i was in london where i had a canon printer, so i bought the hp photosmart 5510 in london aswell and guess what same bsods popping up.....so i replaced the printer and everythings fine again....has it got to do with the printer being not compatible with usb 3.0 somehow???? i scaned my hardware thouroughly with stress test etc and no problems... any ideas??? THANKS

    Hi,
can anyone help me with the issue of the non working sound system after first boot-up even with Bios A03.
Second - what are the best display settings - in my opinion the standard setting (with nvidia cards) is to bright - I always need to reduce the gamma correction in games to the absolut minimum to get a real strong black.
Many thanks for your advice and help!

I purchased an Ailenware M18xR2 a bit over a month ago and must say that so far it has exceed my expectations by a fair amount. The build quality is top notch and the performance is likewise amazing. +1 rep RW IMO.

Would you M18x owners recommend us prospective owners to purchase an additional A/C power adapter and battery? I assume the M18x is plugged in nearly 24/7, so an additional adapter makes sense to me.

This question is about thermal pad placement. I used to have a set of 5870Ms that only had thermal pads on the memory chips, and then thermal paste on the core. When I switched to 6990Ms, I noticed that there are much thicker thermal pads scattered about on the heatsink, cooling different components. The last time I re-pasted, some of the miscellaneous pads fell off, got torn, etc. Can anyone tell me, outside of your personal opinion, how important all the miscellaneous thermal pads are?

And does anyone know of a template for pad thickness and placement?

    Hey Turbod, :hi2:

I assume that your refering to your inbound 7970M.

Check out the thermal pad placement picture on the ebay site link.
AMD Radeon HD7970M (WimbledonXT) MXM 3.0b 2GB GDDR5 - Upgrade Kit for Alienware | eBay
Click on the 2nd picture and that will show you the pad placement.
That is what I used to guide me on where to place the pads. In terms of thickness it is quite easy to see when you try to get the heatsink flush and level on all areas.

Also yes the pad placements are quite important as it could be the difference between thermal shutdown or burning up with heat on one point of the card which is not properly padded up on. Or if it is padded up too high and so on and so forth. I remember I had quite a few thermal shutdown issues with my 6990M gpus in the past when I didn't have proper padding on the mem chips. The heatsink was also not making good enough contact so I had to change back plates and that did the trick.

Hope that helps man. Also these 7970Ms run really really cool compared to the 6990Ms, so your in for a real treat in the thermals department.

Oh also if you required the thermal pad placement for the 6990M's you can find it over here on the 4th picture.

Does running 3 SSDs in RAID 0 CONSIDERABLY reduces performance? Because of running at SATA 2 instead of SATA 3.

Does this sound like a plan or should I go another route?

As some of you may or may not know my M18x just went thru a major upgrade: I went from a 2760 to the 2920 and SLI 560s to SLI 580s. The problem is that my 2920 won’t go beyond 4.5 for one reason or another and plan to upgrade to the 2960 cause of that fact now.

I’m currently selling my processor and cards on EBay and should get at least $400 for everything. With that money I can put towards the 2960 and then sell the 2920 for at least $400 and put that money towards a 680 card. Then I could sell my 580s and purchase another 680 to have the best the M18x R1 can handle.

    Is that a plan?

I'd keep the 2920xm, 4.5ghz (especially if you can do 4.5ghz for everyday use) is already really good and you can't expect to get much more from a 2960xm.

Assuming selling the 580s could net you the cash for one 680m I'd see that as a good thing, one card that is as powerful as those 2 580m and you could add another one later when you have the cash or its needed.
