Long story short. Have a M18x R2 with a dead MB that has dual 7970's. Guy i got the computer from was to get me a new board but has yet to do so. He offered to sell me his M18x with dual 675's for $580. So i'm trying to decide which to use. Or i'll sell the the videocards and get dual 680..

7970m crossfire is at least 60% more powerful than 675m SLI if im correct. you might be in a long wait, Dell short on MB cause most had issues with audio.

You can already get double the performance with 680m's (over 675m's) ..... I imagine that they would be compatible but until sepc's are released, we don't know how much power the 780m's might pull - the 680mx is a 122w card and we haven't seen that in the M18x R2 as an option - maybe because having two of them is too much for the machine to cope with.

Maybe the 780m will simply be a 680mx that's been jibbed about with so that notebooks can use it......

On another subject.....is anyone else getting Chrome crash out? - If I have the browser open and logoff, I get the message that schockwave has crashed and all the tabs go down with the usual "I think it's dead, Jim" message from Chrome.....

I've Googled for a fix, most results come back with disabling a flash plug-in but I only have one installed and disabling that does nothing either...

It's not the end of the world - just wondered if anyone else had experience this of late.

Whoa, thought it was only me who was having this problem. This and the sound not working issue which I reported some months ago - both minor issues which don't really bother me that much

I thought much the same, that maybe it was me LOL. I guess it will get fixed sooner or later, I only noticed it because I logged off with the browser open,, which I hardly ever do anyways. Don't think I've had an issue with the sound though....fingers crossed.

Forgot to mention, after a logoff, in event viewer I also get an error which reoccurs more or less every second: Session "Circular Kernel Context Logger" failed to start with the following error: 0xC0000035 - Dunno if anyone else (Radi?) get the same but this is on a completely fresh install. Anyway, I seem to have found a fix in this thread - in case anyone else finds the same thing: http://social.technet.microsoft.com...l/thread/2eab69ac-7537-40c4-916e-6f6d41c05d4b

There are Windows 7 fresh install and W7 look and feel threads. Is there a thread on what to tweak in Windows 8 to maximize speed/efficiency/ease of use etc.? I used to use Tweaktowns Windows XP guides on many PC's after clean install, just wondering what there is for Alienware so that included software does not get throttled by a tweak. Also possibly a Windows 8 list of recommended add-ons for CPU/GPU tweaking-overclocking, temp/fan control, etc. I also hate tiles and have visited a few sites that offer low cost or free ways to get "start" button back. I have Windows 7 available, but want to learn the new OS while using W7 ultimate on my desktop at home. Thanks for any/all help.

If you have a dual GPU M18x, I do not think you can. Press FN+F7 and switch to IGFX and leave it that way until you get home and have the 330W AC adapter at your disposal.

I will move this question to the Owner's Lounge.

Actually that is a parts list. There is no price list. You'll need to contact Dell Spare Parts or Alienware Support for prices. Or, use the part numbers from the list to search the web for replacement parts.

That might work. Try it and see. Good idea... never thought of doing that. Disable SLI and then disable it in Device Manager.

Hey guys, i am very happy m18x r2 gamer and i have a few questions i have to ask.

I do not have great deal of experience in opening laptops in general and i was wondering what kind of tools do you use to ease the process ?

Any kind of specific screwdrivers, gloves, additional tools ?

    Thank you :)

I use a prescsion screw driver set along with a static wrist guard. Also I. Recomiend getting some small plastic pry tools (think gutair pick but thinner) I work on computers as my business and a good prescion screw set will include all small Philips and regular as long as several torq (T5 , T4 come in handy for electronics)

The pry tools work nice to open like the keyboard so you do not scratch anything.

    Hope this was help full!

    Thank you, Nycro.

I`ve found out that the one of the best brand sets is Wihi or Were. I saw a few stand alone screwdrivers and there was Philips 0 and Philips 00 tip. Which is the correct one for the M18x ?

The idea is to always have the needed screwdriver on hand ( Orion backpack ) since i travel a lot :)
    Thank you :)

I'd also invest in a anti-static wrist band and mat - precautionary, but you do not want an ESD damaging your sensitive components whilst working on your machine - I never open mine up without using such precautions.

I also wear black nitrile gloves to keep fingerprints off components inside the system. Wash them and put some gloves on! Not necessary, but I like to keep things clean and new for as long as possible.

Just one last thing: Which is the correct tip of the Phillips screwdrivers ? Tip 0 or Tip 00.

I have not received my m18x yet so I'm not sure of the proper tip (Maybe I will get lucky and it will come tomorrow!) I will let you know when I get it as have to do a complete tear down as soon as it gets here (Blu ray burner, memory, 2x SSD , 1x1tb, Internal usb card,) so I will try to get some pictures !

When are the M18 motherboards going to be back in stock? I want to order one from the US and have it shipped to a UPS near the border to pickup. Its half the price in the US as it is in Canada.

I noticed you have purchased two 840 pro SSD's and plan to RAID them. I bought the same ones and they wouldn't RAID. Not sure why, but the 830's worked and the 840 pros didn't. Hopefully the issue has been resolved and you won't have the same issues I did. If you do have issues, the 830's are only 2% slower than the 840 pros, but the 840's are a lot more efficient. I'd recommend you grab a pair of those...

Nice system by the way! Enjoy.

Yes I read your post and decided to still give it a try (your post origanly swayed me not to buy both) but like with the corsair memory I bought (tons of people have had problems) I need to see how it goes on my end worst case scenario I can RMA and or sell what I cannot get to work properly. You may have had a bad drive or it could just of been something on your end yet unknow . I guess this will allow us to see as if mine works or not might give us a better idea of what's going on.

    Thanks to BTW :)

Just purchased the Alienware M18X R2 - Direct

How many total drives will it hold? I have heard only the 3 but other places I have heard 5. Anyone know for sure?

Any tear-downs available on where they would put the extra drives?

If you take out the optical bay, it can hold another storage drive. And I believe with a modification you can have two mSata SSD's. So, up to six storage devices in total.

    Congrats on the system!

OK, now posting from the m18x in my sig; finally got my hands on it today! Working my way through game installs and setup now - only complaint I have is the space bar is noticably louder than the other keys.... :) i think if that stays the only complaint, I'll be OK!

Tomorrow I'll probably be installing my data drive - so if everyone in the continental US should happen to hear a scream sometime around early afternoon central time, don't panic - that just means I broke something while opening up my new baby...

edit: got the drive in, now to play with it!

its a known issue with 840 pro they won't raid, some with 128gb some with 256gb, possibly problems with the mobo too. I got 256gb pro version to raid in my R2 but 128gb failed to be seen by bios. my friend is vice versa.

I think he or she was asking if they need a program to get the profile. Which means they don't know how to get the profile off their computer. I would help with the extraction of the profile but I don't know how.
