So like i stated before , i currently have a PC with GTX 780 factory OC SLI and i7 4770k etc...
I really need a laptop and im focused on alienware...
my budget allows me either alienware 17 with gtx 770m or alienware 18 with gtx 765 sli ( both refurbished from ebay).
what should I go for ? I also guess that in the future I will upgrade the GPU on either machines...
I guess portability is a factor, but like i saw mr.fox replying to a similar thread is , that the alienware 17 is not that more portable than an alienware 18... like 1 kg less and not that much thinner, only a headache to open and upgrade and not as much power... but once again, its either alienware 17 with gtx 770m or alienware 18 with 765 sli...

    Thanks in advance :)

    P.S

Both machines will come with i7 4700qm ( a budget thingy)

If I had an 18x I would put a Sandy XM processor and 2 GTX 780s in there before going with the new 18. Going from a desk top with a GTX 780 would be a hard step down . In a year you would regret the 770 and end up paying a lot more to upgrade in the long run.

The bottom line is, there is no wrong answer here. It's what will make you happy in the end. If it is just for gaming and you don't mind not having a mobile king of the hill, then go for it. Good luck

Nice desktop build! I'd like one of those. :p

I would go with the 18, personally. Given the specs of your desktop, I imagine you will probably want SLI in your mobile gaming station. ;) It will give you the option to run dual GPUs, and inherently more upgrade options as well. As far as size, I can't quite speak for the newer models. That aside, I did own an M17x R3/R4, and the difference is negligible. It did feel a bit heavy at first, but I got used to the difference quickly. What shocked me most was the difference in build quality. Metal vs plastic, no contest.

What warranty does each system come with?

If you must buy now, I say go with the 18. Even with the weaker GPUs, the upradeability is well worth it.

If you can hold onto your money and save, might be a good idea to see what the next line has to offer. I know with technology, you can't always wait for the next best thing. But in your case, if you can save up however much you're willing to spend on a lower spec system (I'm guessing it's between $1500-$2000), imagine how much you will have in the next 4-6 months (I guess that depends on where you income comes from). Alienware typically has some amazing deals when their new systems are launched. Might be worth saving up an extra $1000-$2000 and get a beast of a system next year.

With all that said, you do have a nice desktop. If you just need the portability for light gaming, go with the 18.

The 765M is not worlds behind the 770M, so two of them will offer more and will be VERY overclockable in the 18.

I'd say the 17, better cooling, and I think it's lighter, why spend oodles, when you have a pro pc to back you up, the 17 will have power, portability and battery life

That weight will make a difference if you travel with it very often true but the 18 has more potential.
