    Hello

i followed Mr.Fox idea of using that U3 and replacing fan + using a 12Volt AC to DC adapter...

i already had 2 noctua nf-p14 flx from my htpc silent build around so i used those with the plastic gruble to hold the fan on the U3 + eliminating vibration....

Oritented them so both side of fans would trow air in the middle for cpu..
i still have problem with thermal shutdown on stock speed in town while playing ff xiv tho :( but everything else @load is around 60C.....

now to find a proper CPU replacement fan!

Those are 140 mm fans, correct?

Sent from my overpriced Galaxy S6 Edge +

Are you using Liquid Ultra on your Alienware 18?

Stock/MX4 Thermal paste cannot keep up with the poor latency of Alienware 18's fan tables.

I am doing the same thing as Mr.Fox, but my Alienware 18's bottom panel is off for improved cooling xD

Instead of 2 fans, there are 3 (1 X CM jetflo, 1 X 120MM Delta, 1 X 140MM CM), and 2 fans giving the heat exhaust vents a clean exit.

My Alienware 18 will still thermal shutdown if I use stock paste.

I forgot to say thanks to Mr Fox for this idea.

    Yup 140mm fans

Im using liquid ultra and as been for 1 year... i had no problem oc'ed at 4ghz for the whole year,.... then my CPU fan broke ... metal pin that hold the fan ... the plastic simply cracked and the fan was going crazy in there lol.... changed fan for a used ebay one ... and started having thermal shutdown problem....

im using hwinfo64 to push fan @Max over 60C ... and even with fan on maximum on stock clock i get thermal shutdown... i can see osd temperature climbing slowly from 80C to 100C ...

Well yes you would need a dial .. and you can't use usb to power them.... usb is maximum 5Volt ... and the fan require 9 to 12 ..... Mr.Fox as a thread where he used a 12 AC/DC psu with switchable voltage so he can select fan's speed!

i have no data about thunderbolt ... never used or had that ....
    googling wiki gives

Max. voltage 18 V (bus power)
    Max. current 550 mA (9.9 W max.)

should work .... i guess but i would inquire another person opinion hehe

Well i repasted the cpu with liquid ultra (old application was 1 year old) and now on the pad i roughly get 10 to 20C less ...

right now in ff xiv at 4ghz oc'ed cpu never goes over 60C.. while not on pad it would go to 72C .. lol good enough :)

Cut bigger holes in U3 surface above the fans, because it is blocking a lot of air flow. Someone on the forum did that earlier, but I don't remember who...

    EDIT:

For my U3, I just managed to screw the fans in the holes or otherwise, the best way is cable ties :D

I should post a result when I repaste my 18 and turn the fans up to full blast.
