Hi I am having a problem running Raid 0 with two Samsung SSD EVO 250GB, SSD connected to both SATA III
Controller(0+1) but Raid 0 either fail or One of the SSD connected to HDD 1 either fail or Disappear!!! I double chk HDD connection found no problem so it seems like Raid controller has problem with Sammy SSD EVO!!!
Any idea?

You do realize that if you do RAID on a laptop it's software based RAID that uses CPU to do all the operations rather than a dedicated RAID controller. I did RAID, it is very high in benchmarks yes, but OS snapiness went down, I felt like I was using an HDD not an SSD, yes it was that slow.
Secondly, EVOs are not recommended to be RAIDED since they use TLC NAND crappy memory, MLC or SLC is recommended for RAID. If you call Samsung customer care right now they will advice you against RAIDing EVOs even though the whole RAID idea on a laptop is stupid IMHO
just my 2 cents -
I ran both a 840 evo raid - and the current toshiba setup without any problems. Very little overhead (max 1-3% cpu usage with maximum filetranser speeds) and just a snappy as a single ssd setup that I tried.
The only reason I ditched the evo's was because of the problems they have with reading old files (and Samsung still hasn't fixed it).Last edited: Jun 13, 2015 -
All I wanted to know, what causing this problem? Why raid Drive fail after install OS? Why SSD connected to HDD 1 fail to disappear? Both SSD were tested in different Computer, no problem found!!!!!!!!!!!!! Anyway thx for reply.........

then reboot and keep pressing F12 to get the boot menu, then choose Intel Rapid Storage Technology, then you need to create your RAID array there by selecting the 2 EVOs and choose a data stripe of 64K
once done, boot from the Windows installation DVD and now the setup should see both disks as a single large disk which you can partition to install Windows -
There is some kind of compatibility problem with the m18x r2 and the SATA 3 ports with raid 0. I went thru alot of testing, even changed my motherboard and had the exact same issue. I tried the 840s and the evo 850s and the crucial 550 in raid 0 but none of them worked. The raid setup would fail during boot up. I tried a few brands (samsung and crucial) and noticed every brand reacted differently (samsungs will fail to post) and crucial booted but would have hardrive freezes. until i finally found one brand and model that work property with the m18xr2.
I have been running raid 0 SATA 3 ports with a pair of Sandisk extreme pro 960gb without a problem for about 6 months now.
I would have prefered the Samsungs 850 pros over the Sandisk but unfortunately they don't work well in pairs on the m18x r2.
you could run your Evos in raid but u would have to put one of them in SATA 2 port and ur raid will be running only Sata 2 speeds and u wont have any problems this way other than the lower speed of sata 2.
These are the the ones I grabbed.

I should have known the issue with Raid Controller with M18XR2!!!!I thought newer SSD would be fine. I have tried with Samsung 850 Pro 256 GB and Samsung 850 Evo 256 GB but ran into the same problem regardless what setting I used!!!

Sell your Samsungs and get the sandisk extreme pro. you shoulnt have any issues with those and you wont be disappointed with the performance.Spartan@HIDevolution likes this. -
i can add that i add problem with OCZ vector ! lots of corruption ... switched to 2x intel 720 in raid 0 ... been like this for more than 6 month . 0 problem.
intel 720 are the only ones i know of that have a capacitor for "flush in fligh" so if power is removed for any reason ... ssd can finish writing bits and not get any corruption. -

OCZ Vector mentioned in a previous post and Samsung in another are both examples of opposite extremes. OCZ Vectors work extremely well in the M18xR2 in RAID0, but they do not like the Alienware 18. Samsung SSDs seem to be happier in the Alienware 18 than they are in the M18xR2. My EVO SSD and EVO mSATA both work great in UEFI/GPT but run poorly with Legacy BIOS and MBR. My Corsair Neutron and Crucial M4 SSDs seem to work the same under all the conditions I have tried them in, but I'm sure I just haven't discovered the set of circumstances where they would not behave as well..
SSD is kind of like the silicon lottery. Their performance can be very fickle. Problems are not unusual, and no brand is exempt from weirdness. You never know what you're going to get until it's too late. What may work amazing in one machine may have serious issues on another one. Some deliver face-melting results in RAID0 while others malfunction or perform poorly with anything other than AHCI. Some fail in a Secure Boot environment while others work best in that situation. Sometimes TRIM refuses to work with an SSD installed on one system and works fine when it is moved to another one. Some may act buggy in a system with one type of RAM yet function flawlessly in the same system with different RAM sticks installed. The only thing you can really count on is uncertaintly. It really doesn't matter what brand you buy, it's going to be a roll of the dice unless someone else has already tested it on a specific laptop or desktop configuration. I think the variety of proprietary SSD firmware makes the outcome unpredictable. At one point Dell stopped selling Alienware laptops with Samsung SSDs for a legitimate reason. If you don't have a few good examples of well documented results on a particular system configuration to work with before making a buying decision, consider yourself a guinea pig.

SSds behave very different from brand to brand. all the samsung drives I have tried... 840 evo and 850 pro fail in RAID 0 Setup on Sata 3 ports. They work good if you put one of them in SATA 2 ports but you would be limited to sata 2 speeds. When I tried the extreme pro They worked right out of the box @ sata 3 speeds on sata 3 ports.Mr. Fox likes this. -

I had zero issues with 2 x 512gb samsung 840 pros raid 0 on a 18xr2 sata3 connectors..

I have had a slowdown issue with 840 EVO on both of my machines, but only on old data, there is a firmware update that resolves the problem (kinda hard to do when in raid 0) its not really a fix more of a work around as all the new firmware does is move the old data around, since I am lazy replaced 840 EVO in AW18 with 850 EVO and replaced the desktop ones with 850 PRO, no slowdowns so far. As far as Raid 0 in AW18 I have had zero issues with the raid itself very reliable and very snappy system response.

That's very strange that Samsung SSD(Raid 0) has a problem in M18xr2!! Does DellAlienware done something or whitelisted in the Bios for not to work?
Samsung 850 evo 250GB Raid 0 Problem!!!!
