I've got the same 680M SLI it came with and thought about upgrading it just to stay current, though I have no immediate games in mind that I'm chasing performance-wise. Looks like some of the threads here indicate problems that necessitate special mods for the latest (is it?) 980M SLI. Also, looks like the kits aren't simple as pulling and replacing a card. It it worth the upgrade or would it be smarter to just to wait and buy a new system?

Second, am I reading these 980M SLI kit prices correctly? Nearly $2K for the cards on Amazon???

I would stay with this notebook.
Only problem with maxwell cards in the old alienware 18 is that you have to control the right gpu fan manually and you have to use modded driver to solve throtteling issues.
i recommend you not to look in Amazon after this cards. They are much more expensive there compared to other sites like RJTECH or CEG HARDWARECUSTOMS.
    best regards
