I have two choices at me local tiger direct store so Ill be using one of these. Which is more recommended? Ive read good and bad about both here. Anyone ever do the foil tape mod where you foil tape up the gaps in the heatsink to fan connection? Ive read it gave about 2C difference and sometimes for with it alone.

    Gelid GC-Extreme TC-GC-03-A Thermal Compound - 3.5g, Heat Conductivity, Non-Electrical Conductive, Non-Corrosive, Non-Curring, Non-Toxic, No Bleeding, GELID Applicator at TigerDirect.com

    Thermaltake CL-O0028 TG2 Thermal Grease at TigerDirect.com

Leaning more towards the GC only becuase Ive read more about it being used.

I looked at a couple of reviews, and the Gelid TIM looks to be good stuff.

Honestly, anything you can get your hands on will do the job just fine. There are some TIMs that are absolute and complete garbage, though, so don't get me wrong. If you use an adequate amount and tighten your heatsink screws sequentially, you will have good results.

If you're looking for a project, and have torn your laptop apart previous to this, I say go for it. If you've never opened it up before, there is a decent learning curve. And obviously, if your temps are too high, it is time to go for it regardless.

In regard to your mod, I've done similar things to many of my laptops. I usually use electrical tape though. You do want ALL of the air from the fan going through the heatsink for maximum efficiency.

    I like your signature too!

Ive never torn this one apart but ive torn many many many things apart and got them back tigether lol. Im totally comfortable with it.

I will be doing this on my own. Im going to go with ic diamond since the idiot on the phone at tuger told me they had sone instock in store when they didnt... so ill be ordering inline. Also going to replace my wifi card to a intel 6300 and sell this pos 1103.. 6300 seems to be the next best thing.

Yeah, it is exciting to do your own maintenance, that's for sure. Make sure you do some before/after benchmarks with some CPU/GPU stress testing programs so you'll know how much of a difference your work made.

Just remember that there are 100s of different TIMs. The difference between the best and the worst is only a couple of °C.

I had it only once with one of my cards. I swapped it for a new one and never had a problem again. Have them send you a new card

It's hard to "own" Intel when it does not work correctly. Reliability is critical. I have never once had an ounce of grief with Intel Ultimate-N 6300 3x3 MIMO cards. It is a real shame it is not offered by Alienware any more. I have never understood why it and the Panasonic UJ235A BluRay burner (which I also own and love) were eliminated as options.
