The new origin eon 15x announced? It comes in a slim form factor with a desktop cpu ...wow. and a 980m. I'm not gonna lie... I'm thinking about selling the 18 r2 for it... what do you guys think about this thing ?

I like they haven't gone to BGA. It's definitely a compelling system and a good looker. I do like it a lot. I'd like to see something like this with SLI...which is basically the Clevo P570WM. I guess the next P570WM will be very interesting...hopefully.

4970k wouldn't be a very big jump in CPU performance from your 3940xm though. And 980m is about as fast as your 680m SLI :err:

That system uses a desktop chip so it's not soldered. However a similar system with an Alienware cooling system and build quality would be even better.

If Alienware would just grow a spine and release a crazy overkill non BGA system we'd all be happier for it.

Well, according to Engadget dell is discontinuing it massive 18 inch model.!

What's more, the company is discontinuing its massive 18-inch model, confirming that as far as gaming laptops go, there really is such a thing as too big.

I like this better the nthe new alienware 15 because it seems to be as thin, BUT has a desktop cpu. the new 15 has a BGA crap cpu, which is really disappointing.

heres the link for the new origin if anyone doesnt know where to look:

As tom said.. that's just a Clevo. You likely are going to find it better if you buy from XoticPC or something. OriginPC, CyberpowerPC, iBuyPower and Falcon Northwest have been rebranding Clevos for years. Just most people don't realize because they're more mainstream.

Dan, IMHO 4790K really isn't enough of a leap beyond an Ivy XM to be excited about, and lack of SLI makes it unacceptable as a replacement for an M18xR1/R2. The fact that it uses a socketed desktop CPU is a plus as long as you can fully exploit its performance. Depending on how effective (or ineffective) the cooling system is, and what the BIOS overclocking options are, you could even lose ground on the CPU performance. I would keep what you have or get a P570WM3. I know you like to run Intel iGPU, so the latter may not suite you well.

Not quite but pretty close. Single 980M with a MASSIVE overclock can't match my 680M or 780M SLI 3DMark11 graphics score with a much lower max overclock. There is no substitute for multi-GPU bandwidth.

Compare: Mr. Fox's 680M SLI 3DMark11 High Score versus Single 980M

Compare: Mr. Fox's 780M SLI 3DMark11 High Score versus Single 980M

You're better off spending nothing and keeping what you have now if performance is of great importance. I suspect the build quality of your M18xR2 is much better, but I haven't handled one of these new machines to know how well they compare.

A max overclocked 980M is about 90% the benchmark scores of 780M SLI at their peak so the 980M would provide a better gaming experience since single card systems always give a smoother frame rate.

I could say that the advantage is that you will never be worried about what games will only use 1/2 your power.

It's not enough for ME... but for a regular user (especially one who kept 780Ms at stock for gaming) it should be fine.
