The Razer Naga Epic is the perfect solution, for the M18x's lack of an Infrared Receiver.

I'd first like to apologize for the quality of the pictures that I am about to post. My $ony Alpha Nex 5 camera is down for repair.

Besides the RGB LED screen, the IR receiver was hard for me to give up when I was offered a M18x as a replacement for my M17x R2. Since receiving my M18x, I have been searching for an IR remote alternative that did not include a USB dongle taking up another USB port.
That search has finally come to an end. I am so excited by the Razer Naga EPIC's performance/form factor/functionality, that I have to share it with other NBR M18x owners. My past gaming mice include the Razer Mamba, Razer Orochi, Logitech G9X and Logitech G500. I have bound my macro keys to control my favorite media players, which works waaaaay better than an IR based device because of the Naga's use of an RF signal.

What makes this mouse so sick is:
    •17 Fully-programmable MMO-optimized buttons (including 12 button thumb grid)
    •Wired/Wireless dual mode capability
    •3 Interchangeable side panels
•Charging dock (also functions as a wireless receiver unit)
    •Unlimited character profiles with AddOns
    •Optional MMO-specific software AddOns
    16 million color backlight illumination
You can set the mouse to cycle through a bunch of colors...very cool!!
•5600dpi Razer Precision 3.5G Laser Sensor
    •1000Hz Ultrapolling™ / 1ms response time
    •Approximate size: 116L x 77W x 41H (in mm)
•Battery Life: 12hrs (continuous use); 72 hours (normal gaming usage)
The software has been revised and runs smoother/faster than the Razer Mamba's.

Here is a few pics I took to show the M18x & Razer Naga.

    Hi
is it possible to use the naga epic with a mini wireless receiver (e.g. the one Logitech uses..)
I really like the mouse and the illumination but I dont want to take the wireless/charging unit with me when I am on the go..

In wireless mode you have to have the base/dock connected. The quality manufacturing of the base is amazing. To be honest the base is small and has a considerable amount of weight to it. It feels like it is made out of some type of high quality scratch resistant ceramic.

The only mouse that Razer sells that is bluetooth and does not require a base is the Razer Orochi. The only problem with the Orochi is that it is setup to sleep after 3 seconds of inactivity to conserve battery and has a noticable amount of wake up lag in wireless mode. The Naga Epic can be configured to sleep whenever you decide by way of a customizable slide control. What really sets the Naga EPIC apart from other Razer mice is how snappy the on screen display is. Even in wireless mode everything is instant. On the Razer Mamba the interface is slow/buggy and lacks the amount of features the Naga EPIC provides.

A £100 mouse to cover for a £7 usb ir receiver? Ouch.

I personally hate where the shortcut keys are. On my m1730 they were at the front. Top left just doesn't do it for me.
Nope, not unless it comes with one.(doesn't look like it) You cannot use inter-brand dongles unless it's bluetooth.

If you want a compact receiver based mouse then look at the g700.

I figured that after owning a 4300.00USD+ AW laptop, what's another 129.99USD? Another deciding factor for me was that my gameplay requires a multi color wireless gaming grade mouse to match my M18x's AlienFX. I might as well only take up 1 USB port than 2, by not adding a unnecessary USB dongle for my remote control needs.

Here's another review that shows the Razer Naga EPIC outside of MMO's.

I just use a USB hub, only place I use the remote is when the laptop is connected to my TV. Got the IR USB dongle way back with my Inspiron 9100, not sure where the original remote is as I use a Logitech Harmony.

I also have a Logitech Harmony 1100. Great remote. Since 90% of the time I use an external mouse it, it just makes more sense to combine the mouse & RC into 1 unit that does not require "line of site" or the clutter of a USB hub...Plus the Razer Naga EPIC is just so darn cool!!! :D

If your good with a hub or using an additional USB port besides the one used for an external mouse, then I agree that your Harmony remote is the ultimate solution for a remote control. :)

Here's a better pic of it next to my old R2. The G13 is sick in every way!! I can't play with out it. I also choose to use it rather than put wear & tear on my M18x's keys. It also has customizable lighting like our Alienware's. I buy a new one every year just to keep things fresh.

That's about the price of a wired/non multi colored Naga.
Make sure it's a Naga Epic. Not a regular Naga.

Out of 289 reviews at Amazon the Razer Naga EPIC has claimed an average of 4 out of 5 stars. Also Amazon is the world's largest online retailer. :D

You have got to tell me what you think after you get it all setup and make sure you enable on the fly sensitivity OSD and map it to the the 2 face buttons on top for easy access. I always buy a warranty with every electric device so that I can get the next best thing down the road. The warranty I bought(20.00USD) is for 3 years.

I also own a G13, I use it for the exact same purpose, and it really is awesome! Can't do without all the macro keys anymore.

Question though, about the Naga, do you find it difficult to locate the exact key that you want to press, without looking? Since the keys are all clustered pretty closely on the side of the mouse..

No. Once you master the G13 the Naga EPIC is childs play.
    I forgot to add that the Naga's side Macros have an indentation on the 4, 5 & 6 then 10, 11 & 12 keys for finger placement. Kinda like the G13's G10, G11 & G12 keys.

I find that Newegg tends to have more technically savvy reviewers. Amazon gets more short, fluff reviews. This mouse has way more negative reviews than I'd like to see on a product and the same issues are consistently showing up in the negative reviews.

Everyone should do their own diligence and make an informed decision. Personally, I'm staying away from this one even though I was really excited about it at launch.

I couldn't agree more with your statement. Regardless of the 37 total reviews on newegg vs the 289( mostly positive) reviews on Amazon, you should follow your own advice. Maybe newegg got a bad batch? Who knows..........

I can't count how many times that I read reviews from past Alienware owners stating that AW computers are full of problems and their customer service sucks!!! But here I am, typing on a M18x and loving every second of it.
Don't stop yourself from giving this awesome device a chance based on some "spotty reviews" at newegg. Take the bull by the horns and think for yourself, instead of hijacking this thread. :D

OK, so here I was, getting off work and reading reviews on this mouse at red lights on my Iphone on the way to buy this thing................ I do respect skygunner but I drove right past the store!! Unfortunately I do put weight into reviews on newegg and they AINT good.

Plus, I got to admit, I already HAVE a razer mamba mouse and after reading everyone's reviews on razer I started second guessing myself with some concerns I had before. I really thought it was always me playing my games that I sucked cause every so often I thought the mamba mouse would never register clicks that I did but I convinced myself it was just me. I switched out my razer mamba tonight with a logitech I had in the basement and my game play got WAY better on L4D2. Stupid Razers. :p I'm not happy with them now.

    I respect you too. :)
You are right to have concerns regarding the Razer Mamba.
The Razer Mamba does have issues registering clicks and often hangs for no reason. I can attest to that. Did you read through the 289 reviews at Amazon? Most of them are positive. I really hope you buy it at a store that has a good return policy so that you can give this mouse a chance. After 3 days of ownership I haven't encountered any lag or miss clicks. The overall feel and left & right click buttons provide better tactile feedback than the Razer Mamba.

The software on the Mamba is wonky at best. The Razer Naga Epic's software loads instantly wired or wireless and utilizes less ram.

Hmm, good point, yes, the store I use, (xxxxxxxxxxxx) does have a 7 day return policy and they price match. That is how I can get one for 92 bucks. They also have IPR warranties they sell and stand behind as well. I should try it............. but dang razer............. why so many unhappy people? :(

I still need to go into xxxxxxxxxxx and pick up another hdd for my SHIPPED M18x soon too. I want to take out the original out of the m18 and acronis copy it before first time bootup onto either a momentus xt 500 gb or a wd black caviar 750 gb 7200rpm hdd and see if it acts like the original seagate that came with it. :) If it does, I wont touch the original and I will add the M4 and this new hdd to my M18 yay.

I bought the RAT 7 and returned it all in the same day. It felt really cheap for the price.
Here's a fantastic review of the RAT 7.
    ‪Cyborg R.A.T. 7 Gaming Mouse Review‬‏ - YouTube

What I didn't like about the Mamba's dock was that it's made out of cheap Playstation 3 Piano Black plastic that is prone to scrathes. It also has no weight to it for a dock.
The Naga Epic's dock is heavy/magnetic and made out of a really nice Black ceramic type material. It weighs more than the M18x's Keyboard. I'm serious!!!

Every media player uses a set of commands or an individual key to control actions like play/pause, rewind, fast forward, full screen, stop etc.....
This mouse comes with 12 conveniently/strategicly placed macro buttons on the side, that allows you to bind/map individual keys or a set of commands.

This mouse's Macros combined with it's wireless capabilities allow it to work as a good RC alternative.

oh ok i get it... i thought you were using the mouse receiver as a via point to take place of an IR sensor and receive signals from other remotes etc. it is a nice mouse... ive looked before but havent ever needed 17 buttons on one mouse... as it my deathadder had duplicate button assignments!

Some idiot/co worker was just admiring my new company Toshiba Qosmio laptop & Naga EPIC, knocked my Razer Naga EPIC on to the hard cement based floor and broke one of the sensitivity buttons on top.
Now I have to press it down really hard for it to register.

Now I have to wait until I get off work to get a new one!!! I'm so pissed....and there's a scratch on the changable grip now!!!

My day is ruined until I exchange this badboy!!
The idiot that broke it, is buying me lunch!!!

    Ouch. That sucks. Dang co-workers.

I plugged in my epic this morning before I took off for work and I'm reading the manual now. What the heck?????? Why can't this mouse figure out if it's wired/wireless by itself? I can't believe a mouse this expensive has a switch on it? My mamba knew automatically. :(

I hate having to wait until 5PM to go get a new one.

I read the developers comments on the website about that. They said that the reason they changed the Naga EPIC and new Mamba to this setup was because the old method caused bad battery life and took forever(5 hours) to charge in wireless mode on the dock.

Unfortunately I like bright LED's so I have mine set to maximum brightness in wireless mode.

Lunch? He'd be buying me a new mouse, but it sounds like yours can be exchanged so that's good.

I've had the Naga Epic for a while now and love it. I had the regular Naga previously and it was also really nice, but the Epic fixes all the issues I had with its predecessor, specifically making it wireless (the big one) and the adjustable grip. I was also pretty impressed with Razer's support policy; the first one I had acted really weird - it would work wirelessly some of the time with my old M17x R1 but then stop for no apparent reason. Tried it with other laptops and had zero issues. Plugged it in (wired) and had zero issues. They spent a little time troubleshooting, couldn't fix it, and said, "send it in - we'll send you a new one." Have had zero issues with the new one on the old M17x or my new M18x.

Oh, and if you play MMOs, this is THE mouse to get IMHO. Has changed how I play WoW and LOTRO.

The thought of having this sick mouse with a busted button and a big scrath is ruining my day. I'm leaving work 1 hour early to go get another one. Thank you for you input. I agree last gens Razer mice had all sorts of issues. The Naga EPIC is the only Razer mouse that I've seen that works perfectly. I'm going to get a refund, then re-buy the Naga EPIC w/ 3yr warranty so that I don't have an exchange on file.
