    Thermal paste recommandations?

    I finally got my hands on a mxm 1070 from china and a 3940XM.

    Now I just want to ask what would be a recommedned thermal paste for these units.

    IC Diamond was mentioned to work well with the 3940xm, while gelid, noctua and grizzly seem to work well with the gtx 1070, no idea what plates (the ones placed on the sides of the graphic card) to use though.

    Maybe I am overthinking this, but since the m18x disassembly is quite a pain I just want to do it as right as possible on the first try and lock it up tightly.

    IC Diamond should be fine.

    I've heard good things about Gelid & Phobya Nanogrease as well but IC Diamond has performed well for me in these laptops.

    I’ve used a few over the years and personally I think IC Diamond 7 works a treat for both CPU & GPU. But any of the above mentioned are good. I’ve heard people regret using LM but some have had no problems. I wouldn’t want to take the risk.

    Liquid metal seems to beat others by one or two celcius, but I do not feel comfortable by messig something up due to teh electric conductivity.

    IC diamond it is then. /? 7 or hatever variant avilable.

    Nope, liquid metal easily beats up any other by about 10-15 degrees. I used it on my CPU and the temps went down ~14 degrees.

    I'll disagree with the above, LM has consistently been 2-5C better on the laptops that I've done when compared to Kryonaut. For me it's just not worth the effort on my laptops anymore. I'm all about trying to squeeze every bit of performance out, but I also have to factor in risk vs reward. Undervolting makes a much larger improvement.

    Of course there's also always a risk with LM, my system for exapmle doesn't get moved very often and it's always flat on the ground

    Btw, you cannot undervolt every CPU, below Haswell it's not easily possible, as far as I know.

    You're absolutely right about not being able to undervolt older gen CPUs, it's been a long time since I've had my M14x and M17x laptops...

    I don't even really bother with LM on my desktops anymore, just so much easier to use a good thermal paste IMO.

    In my case using it really helped me. Went from ~84 C to ~70-72 C, so gained about 12, 13 degrees and could go a +0,2 MHz higher, compared to Gryizzly Kryonaut, which is also one of top spec pastes.

    Liquid metal is a requirement when overclocking these old mobile extremes, coupled with triple pipe heatsink I can hold 4.2-4.3GHZ 4 cores full time. Not possible on any conventional compound

    I can hold 4.3Ghz on my 3920XM all cores/4.5Ghz single core all day on IC Diamond.

    I can also do 4.4Ghz on all cores actually, I just prefer 4.3Ghz because it requires no additional voltage.

    One of the one laptops I own that can render videos all day long at full speed no throttle.
