One of my 980Ms crapped out, sent it in for service, got put on parts hold, then was told there are no more parts being made and the system would have to be replaced with an Alienware 17 R3. I laughed, told them to return my system, and hung up the line.
Beware fellas, take care of your Alienware 18s or sell while you still can. The parts are drying, despite not even being re-released for a year yet. Shows what a crappy money-grab this was by Dell, they can't even back their own systems within a year of being sold.

Lucky mines been rock solid. I dont overclock mine or push it at all. Hopefully it wont ever give any trouble. But yes I was thinking of selling it.

ggwp alienware, pushing everyone to bga junk
guess I'm going to look for prospective buyers on a laptop I haven't even received yet -
The same tactics like M$. Force you over to new thrash. Pay $ 5000 for a gaming laptop and you receive back a cheaper crippled machine. Yeah. DELLIENWARE have started long time ago to destroy their own reputation.

Call and try to cancel first, if it is in transit, suggest refusing shipment, and refund you when they get the tracking confirming it's heading back to them - never having been delivered / accepted.
It's too much $ to tie up in a dead-end laptop, no matter how cool it once was.Papusan likes this. -

He bought a used one of the forums, wouldn't be cool.

Yeah they guy needed wedding money. Regardless, it's time to abandon, since the flagship has fallen and I refuse to step down to a speedboat.
-
You should be able to get a refund on the Alienware 18 if and when they are no longer able to source the components for it.
At least my warranty says that they are allowed to replace with a system similar or better in regards to performance, or give a refund.
Just take the refund if they can't repair it, and buy something else. -
Maybe you people forgot the special name for Aw18? *Limited version* Maybe the name also reflected Limited spare parts?

Regardless yes, but sell it don't try to screw the guy on the forums by sending it back.

What a pathetic, worthless, embarrassment of a company. They haven't just fallen, they've become a complete piece of crap company that deserves nothing less than total failure. It is truly time to move on because supporting this company, even being associated with them and their recent decisions makes me a worse person. It's now about principles and they don't share mine. Worst part is, you can't get crap for the machines anymore. If you bought it for 5k 2 months ago, you might get 3k for it now, if you are lucky.

I don't know what to do. They said the refund was not an option since this was a replacement to begin with.

How about demanding an equally priced Area 51. I've said before that if they can't honor the warranty on an 18 for another 18 then they need to offer an Area 51 that is priced at what was paid for the 18.
-
Not going to return it.
I can probably take it back to my home country and sell it for double the price thanks to the general stupidity and level of education people have.Spartan@HIDevolution, Ashtrix and Papusan like this. -

@Raidriar > we posted March 10 (p.52) in the RIP A18 thread the day it was disappeared; I assume you sent yours back last week, so nary 6-7weeks later they can't service it ... oh ... this is too much. Old tired @Alienware-Frank wasn't kidding when he called it a Limited Edition, parts & all > a seemingly simple part; these systems are all but brand new, who depleted stock so fast with warranty calls???
BGAware / Fazorware / FazorBlades, I can't take it no mo ...

I'd like to see this thread find its way onto AlienArena as a link for commentary; I'd put it there meself but haven't the stumich for it:" NBR 2015: Ask Alienware's General Manager" "I ask that you please give the new products a chance. We worked hard to design and develop them for you and they are pretty awesome. I understand they are different than some products in the past and change is often hard to accept but please don't completely dismiss the benefits we introduced. They are thinner, lighter, have better battery life and have some awesome performance. I know you're tired of hearing it but the Amplifier is amazing and it saves you from having to buy a new notebook or struggle with an unofficial MXM upgrade every year or so. The long term value of that invention is badass" > no Francis; the invention of long term high-failure-rate spare parts is of a higher value to your highest paying customers ...Last edited: Apr 28, 2016 -
The no longer manufacturing parts MIGHT have something to do with nvidia actually theres reports going round theyre ceasing manufacturing of gtx980s in preperation for the launch of pascal gpus this summer.

We all know that it's quite difficult to get hands on the screens, sign of things to come....

I already knew this would be the case. They sold just about every piece they could, and a ton of people got theirs replaced via warranty. I knew there would be no replacement 980Ms.
For those of you that want to use their 980Ms till death. I suggest sticking with the stock VBIOS.

seems to me not being able to get an 18 repaired or replaced with an equivalent system with the warranty you paid for that states that is what they will do is the biggest breach of contract there is. Getting a single GPU, non upgradeable 17 with half the performance makes no sense either.

Dang Raider..that's crazy. As a recent Alienware 18 buyer (this January) this makes me worried if something happens. It's only fair for them to give you the $$ equal to purchase another gtx 980M on ebay or something. Offering a dumbed down replacement for your 18 is unnaceptable.
-
Alienware Canada still has screens and motherboards. Not sure about 980ms.
-
FYI I still don't have my computer back. It is in "engineering hold" now

Wonder how it would go over if we could take our money back and say it's on "payment hold". Fair is fair right?
Warning: Alienware 18 parts no longer manufactured
