Hey guys,
My 4930mx has started to overheat recently (stock clocks). I decided to peek inside and take a look at my thermal compound. Here's what I saw:
![]()
The first question is: it appears that the pressure from the sink is strong enough to squeeze all the paste out from the CPU, how strong should I tighten the heat sink screws when applying Liquid Ultra?
Given the fact that my Liquid Ultra paste will arrive only in a week or so, I went to the closest computer parts store in my town (a really small town) and took some random thermal paste, It saved me around 5 ~ 10 degrees and now I'm able to actually do something rather than simply staring into the desktopThing is, this effect of the new thermal paste lasted for only a couple of days before my 4930mx has started to regain its heat. Right now after a few hours of use the CPU temperature averages at 60 degrees without any load.
I tried to alter my fan profile with the help of Hwinfo64, for some reason when I use it, it controls the CPU fan, but disables one of my GPU fans completely. After I uninstalled Hwinfo64, it still seems that my fan profile is not the same as it was before. How do I uninstall it completely/revert changes to the fan profile/make sure that the profile is stock again?
Many thanks.

That is known as "pump out" and it is not from over-tightening the heat sink. It's just crappy thermal paste. Most of them do that. IC Diamond, Gelid GC Extreme and Liquid Ultra hold up much better.
As far as tightening, just bottom out the screws in the X pattern shown on the heat sink. No need to cinch them down hard. It won't make the fit any tighter or provide any kind of benefit. Tension is controlled by springs on the screws. Overtightening will only make the screws difficult to remove later.
You'll be amazed at the results with Liquid Ultra. It should last you at least a year if applied correctly.
You need to add a check on SW SMI to fix your fan issue. See images below.

Thank you, Mr. Fox. On your screenshots(#9, 10), what is the name of the software which panel is in the upper-right corner?

Ok, I applied Liquid Ultra a few moments ago, here's what I have in the XTU benchmark, with everything set to default. Is the temperature too high?
-
My BIOS version is a10, I did not change anything in there. Any advice/input would be greatly appreciated!
-
I don't think that Liquid Ultra reduced my overall temps, probably just a few degrees less (if any). Again, I simply sit at the desktop, doing nothing, and my temps suddenly go from 50 to 60 for a second or so.. at 60 my fan kicks in(custom hwinfo64 fan profile), for a few seconds as well. And that's really annoying as hell. Is there something wrong with my bios or anything else?

. Thanks!

Here is my result in Cinebench 11.5:

wprime 1.55 for some reason won't start. It gives me an error when I launch the .exe file
I also want to say that there's no dust in the radiators or anywhere else, everything is as clean as possible.Last edited by a moderator: May 22, 2015 -

Thanks for the help guys! Here are my wPrime 1024 8 threads results: 200.598 seconds with the highest temperature of 83 degrees.
I have no idea how to open that .wps file generated by wPrime (tried wPrime as well as convert it to something else. Notepad/wordpad cannot encode it).
After the test has ended, wPrime immediately closed that test window and I couldn't even make a screenshot.
Is there anything that can be deducted from the three test scores? Where should I look into to lower my CPU temps? Or is it just a bad CPU I was lucky to get?
Why is my CPU frequency 3700 - 3800 instead of 3900?
I'll reboot and take a picture of my bios settings.. Thanks a lot, guys. I have an obsessive need to lower my temps and then, perhaps, overclock my 4930mx and 780m sli for a little. Right now the max GPU core frequency seen by me was 831, but most of the time it is sitting at 770.
Oh and Mr. Fox, I saw you had some sort of duct tape around your GPU die, on your video, where you showed how to apply Liquid Ultra. Am I right? -
Here's a gallery of my benchmark and bios settings, many thanks.

I would be most grateful if someone could show me his stock bios settings/benchmark scores/temps (idle, regular load(gaming/work), benchmarking)/cpu frequency by cores.

I, of course, saw the thread you gave me the link to. Do people still use the old A03 bios? -

Take a look at my GPU thermal pads, lol. I did not do that!
Can anyone imagine a scenario where they will end up like that? -
I've seen much worse than this. LoL... Typical mistakes of those who put together your laptop. Always smart and take a look after a while whether you have ok temperature or not. Always shift to a new and better thermal grease after buying laptops. You can manage a better application of thermal grease and pads than the technicians do.

Hey guys! Finally have my thermal pads and Liquid PRO arrived. Going to try the PRO version on my 4930 and both GPUs.
Can you tell me whether my previous (it's been 10 days or so) Liquid Ultra application has any flaws? Here are the pictures:

On the third picture, above the CPU, there are four gray squares, do you place a thermal pad on them?
Many thanks.Mr. Fox likes this. -
It's hard to tell from photos, but I don't see anything that jumps out as being a problem. Your temps were looking good as well.
No, do not put a thermal pad on those gray squares. That will prevent your heat sink from fitting properly on the CPU die. -
I repasted everything with Liquid PRO + new thermal pads from Fujipoly (6W) and got -10 on both GPUs and around -8 on the CPU, awesome!
Right now I run 40x at 1.145v.Mr. Fox likes this. -

That's a nice drop there, what are you running the gpus at?

Need to go to work now, gonna test it later today!
Here are cinebench and XTU screens: http://i.imgur.com/HeaLQmU.jpg?1. In Cinebench, the highest temperature was 72.Mr. Fox likes this. -
OK, good job. Now that your temps are under control, do it with 4.3GHz or 4.5GHz.
