Samsung are the only ones that make PLS panels as it their technology it is a variation on IPS,looking at those part numbers the Dell part number is the same...

That's worrying to hear. I've been having the same green line issue on the right side of my screen for nearly a month now. It only shows up when I wake my screen up after it has gone dark for a little while. Could this be a sign that my screen will fail soon?

Those documents seem really generic and do not really give any detail specific to the display in the 18. That information (dated Q1 2011) may not even be relevant to the Alienware 18 display. The M18xR1 and M18xR2 also have Samsung 18.4" display panels. Download and run the Entech Monitor Asset Manager Utility [ LINK] and compare that information to the M18xR1/R2 RGB LED display (shown below). The SEC5448 display was available in multiple sizes. Some of the Studio XPS 16 and Inspiron 17R SE (special edition with discrete GPU) had the same basic display panel (SEC5448) in a smaller form factor, while others used a WLED display.

well the good news is the [program works lol and the bad news is its the same screen in the R2 every thing matches except model number.. unless im missing some thing.. i went on a mission looking for infor on the screen because right now i got some light bleed like the old ccfl screens (top right corner and bottom left corner,, screen is kinda dingy looking also.. whites are washed out and brownish looking.. on this new screen..) now dont get me wrong it has a good picture but not better than my R1 or R2 or my 17s rgb screen for that matter..

but yea for all essential purposes this is the same screen used in the R2 setting wise..

On Saturday I was doing something on my R1, and I think the r1 screen is better than the One on the M18.

WELL AFTER TALKING TO ALIENWARE the rep that i had said there was a high failure rate on the screen.. and with me swapping to the integrated graphic didnt help.. to tell if its the screen you could go into the bios and see if its still there.. if it is then its the screen.. but swapping to integrated graphics will work also.

i forget what my R1 looked like haha but the 18 does have a nice screen.. i think they just hyped up the tech.. same tech..ips HAS BEEN OUT SINCE EARLY 1996..
but for this screen im not sure it is a ips screen.. the colors do pop but there semi off and i cant find and screen calibration program that will work on the laptop with out the contrast setting being used and since we cant adjust that... you get the point..

Although if any one has a profile for the 18 shoot it to me .. or a program that works 100% on a laptop..

Download AIDA64. It should give you the correct name of the display

Pretty bad news if they have discontinued the PLS displays and moved back to R2. The IPS is clearly better based on many comparisons Ive seen.
Not very tempting to buy the Alienware 18 R2 if this is true.

Well, if they do that it makes total sense if the failure rates with the PLS screen has been high. There is nothing wrong with the M18xR1/R2 screen. It is difficult to see a difference between them when they are parked side-by-side. And, as you can see from another owner (bumbo2) I am not the only one that thinks the older screen is just as good... bumbo2 thinks the older screen is better. There's no compelling reason to have the IPS screen for bragging rights if the image quality is roughly the same with a higher failure rate and the backlight bleeding issues. They would be foolish to keep using the newer screen. I'm not sure I would personally count it as bad news.

The viewing angle stability on the other hand is excellent. The picture below proves that there are only minor distortions for horizontal as well as vertical angles. You might believe Alienware integrated an IPS display, but that is not the case.

so which is it.. did they use one ot not.. i pulled the above from the review.

PLS (you find on AW18) is better than IPS.

Personally I prefer PLS (plane line switching) over IPS (in plane switching) to my weary old eyes PLS does have better colour saturation and black levels over IPS as well as slightly better viewing angles...for once it's not Samsung marketing hype.
