Hi all
Just wanted to confirm, if i'm buying a gtx 1060 mxm & 3920xm to upgrade my m18x r2 what else would i need to get?
would i need this heat sink or another?
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Dell-Ali...065759?hash=item3b2a4268df:g:JfIAAOSwwPRcWyDk
what about x-brackets, thermal pads, fans etc? i dont mind getting extra / new fans / heatsinks if it will bring down the heat even if its not absolutely required.
also, can i get final confirmation that this card will work:
and if possible an explanation why this one wont?
also, all the threads i've read talk about needing to do a slight mod with a dremel on the card heatsink. does anyone have any before /after type pictures or one with a red circle showing precisely what bit to adjust?
many thanks!

Um... those are the same cards no?
-
yep, thats what i thought! however in a different thread it was casually said that i should get one of them specifically not the other...and i got confused but no one addressed my follow up question

This one's the best 1060 model there is, the MSI one, most recommend.

Theres also one seller here who sells em brand new. -
Don't bother with 1060, too much hassle with negligible gains over gtx 980M. 980M will work in PEG only mode, offers more vRAM. 1060 limited only to SG mode and has 6GB vram

3920XM/3940XM + 980M SLI is the way to go.
What config does your M18xR2 have right now? -
hmm but presume thats 980m SLI? i guess the cost is broadly the same if this is all i need but i guess the bigger issue is that 980m wont work on Windows 7? Correct? I really dont want to switch to Windows 8 or 10 if possible.
im on 3630qm, no video card (it was taken out by repairs who claim it was burnt but i believe it was a 680m for what its worth).
if i do go with 1060m is there any heat sinks / thermal pads / x brackets etc that i would need to buy? or is just the card & CPU enough? -
Single 980M in PEG mode is within margin of error on a 1060 running in SG mode. If you flash my custom BIOS for the M18x R2 you can use 980M in PEG mode with windows 7. I do that currently with 980M SLITruenoG7 likes this.

hi, thank you for your response. ive been browsing ebay and it seems a 980m would set me back the same amount as a 1060m...so i guess it would be a question of whether the prices on 980m fall enough to make a future SLI option worth it. presume that it would also be easier to install plug / play than the 1060 (where i think id need to do some dremel mod?)
Would i need to purchase anything else in addition to the 980m? any new fans / heatsinks / pads advised?
Many thanks -
If you have the 680m heatsink and thermal pads, they will work with 980M. As for 1060, you will need to grind the heatsink to make a 1060 fit unless you get this specific one:

or

Honestly though if you're going to upgrade to a 1060, I'd skip it and go straight to 1070:

It will be the fastest card you can get without SLI.
980M SLI will probably still be the fastest set-up though, assuming your games support SLI.

680M heatsink, fans, and thermal pads should work fine. Just need thermal paste. -
I am parting out my machines since it seems nobody wants to purchase them, many good parts will be available for sale
-
You're not going to keep any at all?

Just my M18x R2 with the 3920XM in it, the rest I am trying to sell to put money towards a house (or medical school, if I get in)Kade Storm likes this.
