thanks steviejones. i tried that with my first system, level 3 gets me up to 3.6GHz and there's heaps more settings which i have no idea about and was hesitent to mess around with. i'd like to get it up to 4GHz but at the same time do so without voiding the warranty as I paid for a 4GHz machine (as stated on my invoice).

the other thing i didn't mention was the usb/esata combo connector doesn't work with my external RAID array, which works fine on all my other systems. this was one other reason dell offered me a refund, and the system also stopped booting (it wouldn't even POST) and a technician had to replace the mobo of a 2 week old system. seems i'm having the same problems with the new build as well so i'm really confused as to what's going on. no POST problems with this one, the last one had those issues after i discharged the battery one night (tripped over the power cable one night and woke up to find the system discharged, upon recharging it wouldn't POST).

4ghz turbo boost will only be on one core.....If you download Intel Turbo Boost Technology Monitor , you will see that it will boost to 4ghz but wont stay there for long unless you change mulitipliers in bios to something like 40/40/40/40 with a bclk of 100.00

Try running some cpu intensive app like Cinebench 11.5 or the like and watch the gadget boost.....

ah i see, thanks for that, i'll give it a try...my attachment above shows my system running prime95 and all 8 threads at 100% with a CPUz screenshot. there are settings in BIOS to allow me to go higher but i don't know the risk of putting them all to 40. also there's intel HD graphics (integrated gfx?) and other settings which i'm not sure if i need to mess with.

Dont mess with IntelHD - thats the Integrated gpu which you dont want to overclock!

On your first screenie, where it says "level 1-3 overclocking - disabled"....scroll down to it and enable it and you then get a choice of factory overclock settings (1 to 3 with 3 being the highest factory OC).

You can elect to choose any of those factory options and not do any harm....there are many xm owners who push the indicidual core ratio limits up further than factory levels. As to how long you would want to run a heavy OC on your cpu is up to you. Personally, I wouldnt run a heavy OC all the time.

Ive just been running some wprime myself, had my bclk at 100.00 and all cores set to 43 - no problem but probably not advisable to leave those kind of multipliers ALL the time!!

Have a read of this thread:

The UK site still shows the single 560M only for the 17x, the 18x only has it as an SLi option, with the 460M still the default single card. You sure your rep can configure a single 560M in an 18x?

Still nothing with the 560M in the US, either. Reps know nothing. Seems like Dell is going to stretch out the 460M the same way they did with the 200 series. Sucks.

Let me check with him. I am pretty sure that if 560m is available as a single in the M17x R3, there is no reason why it shouldnt replace the base card for the M18x which is currently the 460m.

From what I recall my guy telline me, the 6970 and 460m are gonna be E.O.L (discontinued / end of life) so it makes sense for the single gpu option for the M18x to be the 560m.

Obviously, cant say if its gonna be available to order in the US but I am pretty sure he said that he could configure with a single 560m for M18x in the UK....

I will post back once I find out. ;)

Remember, if you dont ask, you dont get and Dell will rely on people buying direct off the website to get rid of surplus stock of whatever gpu is on its way out......if they have lots of 460m's , you wont see it online until they are gone....makes business sense to get shut of all your old stock before selling new stuff, right?

I realize the 6970M/460M are EOL already, and Dell is simply using what they have left in building the systems, I'm just curious what the official word over there is, since the official word over here is noone knows anything, and the reps can only configure the system the same as on the website. Maybe the UK reps can configure a system differently with options not on the UK site.

Alienware UK fixed the site so the 560M is now the base on the M17x (and no longer has the 460M as an upgrade option), but still shows the 460M as the base with the M18x, and the 560M is only available as SLi. That kind of makes sense too, since the whole point of the base GPU is to make people want to spend money on the upgrade.

I'd just be happy to see 560M SLi or in the M17x in the US, something. Right now it looks like the rest of the world will have the 560M all around while the US gets the rest of the 460Ms until they're all gone.

You will never get an SLI or CROSSFIRE in the M17x R3 because its a single gpu system. Currently in the UK you can choose from 6990m, 560m or 580m.

Now the M18x in the UK will start with a 460m single (which "may" soon become 560m single) then you currently get a choice (which will change soon) of 560 or 580 Sli or 6970 or 6990 Crossfire.

Yep, it's been a long wait. Finally pulling the trigger.

The UK site still shows the single 460M for M18x too, so the US/North America got it 'first' after all...unless maybe it could be configured through a rep in the UK. Then again maybe the US reps could have configured it if any of them had known how to.

Anyone know why you can't add the 560m to the lowest starting point spec? (The one that starts at $1,499) It still shows the 460m as the option. Is that just a bug or is the 560m only available for higher priced configs?

    [edit]Nevermind. Forgot we're in the M18x forum. I was configuring an M17x.

M17x should have the 560M as the base GPU now as well.
