I found instability myself with gputool especially with Vista. After that I just reverted to flashing the cards.

GPUZ has the cool feature of showing the ati memory temperatures, what temps are you guys getting when gaming?

wow, after a few hours I get 84C max w/ all settings maxed out............sitting on a NZXT on full blast

I get 74C max after a few hours when I set the just the shadows to medium

How are you getting such good temps w/ 4850's?

I am not denying that every now and then at several stages of the game my temps can hit 75 also (for example at the char selection screen in WoW), but with normal gaming i dont get above 70.

I never changed any GPU settings but i did drill holes in my bottom cover, use NZXT at full speed and applied OCZ Freeze to everything.

I guess i'm lucky *knock on wood*.... :)

My 4850 inside my m17 is at 70c max as well while doing Furmark Extreme Burning Test. It is sitting on a Thermaltake Massive 23 and with the backcover removed. Now my 4850 is running with 625 core and 1000 memory and the temperature stays the same. It's weird but I'm very happy with the performance now. I'm sure that the core and memory clock can go higher with that low temp but I have not enough time to test it yet. If one can take the clock and memory to 700 and 1150 maybe the 4850 is able to match the new 5870

    Great!

I'm quite happy with the cards, they are not hot at all with holes drilled in the bottom cover and a good cooler :).

Yeah, they're good cards, especially if you've no heat issues. They honestly aren't far off the GTX280ms at stock at all.

    Oh and no goddamned stutter!

    Thread necrowing i know

i'll also do some cooling modification befor i don,t wana burn my baby lol i can't belive i pushed it this far still stuter free how ever when i downed the clock back to normal i forgot what was the voltage in b14 so i can't get my q9000 stable again stock XD damn i need to write that value somewhere LOL 3rd time it hapens

Once you have the QX9300, look to my new 06 score in my sig for encouragement ;)

And that was with an FSB cap.....you can take the FSB to the moon (I am jealous)

a little bit higher but not a whole lot until you start oc higher & the gpu's. also update to the 10.6 drivers, modded drivers were no good for me on that system. looks like your suffering the quad stutter problem i had. i was able to get into the mid 17ks with that same setup, but i had some pretty deep cooling mods, and i benched it with a window air unit right behind it.

    Hi all Alien-maniacs.
I have Alienware M17 since 2 years, but few days ago I upgraded the CPU to x9100 OEM frop P8400.
    My issues are the following:
with AW Bios B14 - voltage of cpu is 1,265 and idle is going to 70-75, after 2-5 minutes of Orthos it goes to 93-95 Celsius and TZ00 North Bridge hits more than 100 so I hit the stop :)
I put Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste on the CPU, on the Heatsink, on the North Bridge and on the thermal pad of the heatsink, which was already old...but I did not take it off.
I think I put a lot of thermal paste - is this a problem? A lot on all places.
I also put on my videocards 4850x2, also a lot.
I use RMclock to undervolt the cpu and it is kind of stable on 1,125v and hit 50-55 idle and 80-82 under stress.
After 1-2 hours playing Crysis the videos hit 90-94 degrees which is much I think, and the cpu around 88-90 also the TZ00.
    Sometimes there is shuttering!
Also I can not overclock, because of the high temperatures.
I read almost 90% of the forum and topics and posts. What do you suggest?
Is the thermal paste a problem (that I put to much) or I have to take off the thermal pad of the North Bridge, or I have to make a copper mod and cut my down cover a bit for more air flow.
I went not for t9900 but for x9100, because I wanted to overclock during gaming.
What are the best voltages and how to overclock dinamicly? I know that is individual, but what are your best scores.
For example I want 3,3Ghz or 3,5 without any cooler in reasonable temperatures.
    I also tried z.29 Bios - same.
And for the videos I remember a max temp around 75-80, now is high. Probably wrong putting of the thermal paste...
    What do you suggest me?

Also I still have the strange problem with my keyboard after they replaced mine.
If all M17 users can check do they have the same?
For example holding right arrow and up arrow, and presing A, S, D OR W, some letters do not work D for example(and 10-15 more of the rest keyboard - in games/text editors and everywhere).
    Do you have same issue?

First off, this is the wrong thread to bump with your question. You could make a new thread or post in the most common "M17 owners general information thread."

Secondly, I'll help you out with what you've said. I a q9000, another quad similar to yours but not the same, with two 3870/3850's in crossfire and 4gb ram. I never noticed the three or four key problem (holding up+right and pressing a key, or holding a+s+d and pressing another key), but mine seems to do the same thing. My suggestion would be to remap your keys if you're trying to play a game and need to hold all these keys at the same time. Or create a hotkey for some action or something.

About the temps, those are pretty high, higher than I remember seeing about M17s in most threads. I would suggest you reconsider the thermal paste you've applied. In most cases you should NOT apply a lot. Only the adequate amount. Too much or too little results in improper heat transfer, which leads to really high temperatures. Check to make sure your air-ways are clear and you are using your laptop on a flat surface that doesn't absorb the heat, but lets it dissipate.

That's about all I can help you with as I don't OC my m17, hopefully someone else can help you out, but this really should be in a different thread...except for maybe your benchmark questions...

You are probably right that this is for new thread. Anyway posted here, because of voltages and temperatures.
    I'll make a new thread.

So you have the key-combination issue.
It's pretty strange for a gaming notebook to have such issue. If games can not remap keys...such as fifa 2010 (2011 can).

P.S. Here is the new thread:

that is at room temperature using only multi I will likely need to use the FSB to hit 4ghz

with a such overclock the m17 runs hot with fans in max and temp bouncing between 62 and 82 at idle .....

Update i was able to psuh up to 4.0ghz but it crashed befor i could finish saving the screen i suspect it's because i'm a little to shy on the voltage but i wanna avoid cooking the chip in the middle of july

Just throw it in the freezer :D

I know that at 1.4V I was able to do 4 GHz not sure how stable it was though. I ended up doing all my benches at 4.16 Ghz and 1.5V in the long run. I think if you up the FSB past 1333 MHz which will allow a lower multi it may be more voltage friendly on the CPU.

Lets see some actual benches though, not just overclocking screenies ;)

and now my gpu fan died i'm trying to order a new one but it might take a while so no benches not even a laptop .....

EDIT running 2x 4850 on passive cooling done ....

GPU-Z says my gpu fan always stays at 30%, is that normal?

What does your passive cooling setup look like?.....one of my cards is always super hot, even with all the IC7 treatment and cleaning.

GPU-z read the value that the ati card report aka 30% how ever the fan run at w/e it currently need

(hwinfo32 could at a certain time monitor the m17 fan but he disabeled it for stability reason how ever maybe we can request that the sensor can be enabeled or disabeled at the person's will)

it's not really a passive cooling but i have my home fan blowing into the laptop and i have a usb cooling pad blowing the air into the heat sink

and i think you can see my addition to the cooling setup through the mesh on the last picture in that thread http://forum.notebookreview.com/not...cations-custom-builds/594975-pimp-my-ufo.html

i can take more detailed picture of what it's like tomorrow
