Hi - I have followed the numerous throttling threads on this forums and am trying to fix a problem involving playing a graphics intensive game (SC2, Black ops, Civ V - does NOT do it for WOW or ME2, or FO3) it runs extremely well, and then will just drop in FPS for a short amount of time depending on the game, then revert back to normal. It repeats this.
I have disabled powermizer (i believe...i loaded the PowerMizer Program up, hit disable powermizer, then applied & rebooted), and am using throttlestop, following directions on these forums. I logged my GPU temp with gpu-z and see a distinct trend of the gpu temp going to 74, then dropping back down to about 69 degrees, then back up...and down...
Is there anything I am Missing? how can i get it to break the 74 degree barrier?
m11x r2, i7, 4gb, no OC on gpu or cpu..dell 257.XX drivers...
Thanks in advance.

So your having problems with Online Games? If that so that Depends on the Traffic of the Game at that Time.
Now Civ 5 is Mostly Caculations With Multi AI running in the Background (Up to 22 country with 28 City State AI each with Workers Plus combat units and such Which slows down the game some.
The other Games I dont have so I am Not sure. But I notice on some games like Crysis and such some areas Bog down due to grapics. -
Thanks for the reply...
its happening in single player SC2 as well...its very noticable in fps like black ops as it will run at 50-60 fps just fine until it hits that temp, then drops to 15-20fps,then right back up... -
If you had the laptop for a while blowing the dust out might help. Not sure on a M11x but a laptop cooler might be a idea. IF they have them for that size
.
Try it and let us know. -
sounds like a CPU throttle instead of GPU. check the temps of your CPU. get CPU throttle stop and test again. I had same issue in Black Ops until i used throttle stop.
-
Use Throttlestop!!!

If you're not using throttlestop I suggest it, the throttling probably isn't caused by what makes most other computers throttle though, it's most likely the fact that it's being stressed and for some reason the tdp/tdc settings are very low from the factory. See this thread for more:

already Using throttle stop, set the settings at 30/60.....u think going higher would help?
-
30/60 is fine. any higher doesn't make any difference. looks like it is a GPU throttle if throttle stop is being used and you're still seeing throttles.
-
Thanks for the response...
I am using Powermizer disabled too, thats why its odd that it hits 74 degrees exact ,then drops back down.... -
Mazda - what are your settings for throttle?
tdp
tdc
Force TDp/TDC
thanks. -
My point is, all the add-ons tend to make troubleshooting issues a bit difficult.
Not really sure why you would disable powermizer to begin with. I'll look around - didn't know you guys were doing this. Anyone have a link to the thread where this is being discussed (powermizer kill)? -

Batboy - I think the thread has something to do with the small applet that updates the registry entries for powermizer. 1 is to enable/disable (on ac), the others is to enable/disable on (DC/battery).
Thanks, StevenX -
I do notice a great increase in FPS from TS being on however, so i am happy with that.
Honestly, im willing to admit that BLack ops has been just PLAGUED with issues and many have similar issues as me, but when it happened in Civ V after a few hours, and SC2 Single player (not multi..), it was just odd.
i really appreciate all the help. thank you -
thanks - yeah, i remember that thread now. Oddly enough, nobody really posted any actual data showing that throttling was an issue. Now, before everyone freaks and tells me thats not the case, I'm not saying that some were/are not seeing an issue. Post up some data (in that thread) and lets look at it together.
FWIW, my 11xR1 has the SU7300 in it. Never had any issues at all with gaming other than perhaps incompatibility of the dell driver with some of the newer titles and the fact that its going to have issues with some titles compared to the 17x.
Thanks for the link. Leaving my powermizer alone.
As for blackops... pfft... dont even get me started. IMO the issues seen with that title are not hardware issues but serious issues with the implementation of the title on the PC... wait, did I just reference it being a 'port'.I bought that title and can say 100%, I really regret not waiting to read multiplayer reviews/waiting for the bugs to be worked out. This can all be discussed here:

ha. well I have data, and i can say with 100% confidence at 74 degrees it throttles down.
I am going to run some tests tonight with other games and see if there is some sort of commonthread.
any help is necessary, even if others have this problem chime in? -

..edit Sorry, just realized the second page.. my bad, try to make it a bit more relevant
What sort of overclock are you using? (I'm using 150mhz just to get a bit over my old core2duo scores), my fan doesnt even kick in on CPU intense processes, using bios 03 though.. read up on that if you need...
SC2 is Cpu heavier more than other games so that makes sense to me as well if the CPU is your limiting point.. Also, The 260.99 nvidia drivers are a fair improvement.. just a bit quirky, you will often have to navigate to the .exe file and right click -> run with high performance card, if you haven't already, that option is a check box in the nvidia settings.. I have a very new R2, but my heat is getting 65 max w/TS and no GPU @150mhz, perhaps some of the good people here can put up some temp settings to see if there is a standard score for heat levels you can compair too...
Also, are you seeing any HD lights kick in when your system stumbles? perhaps you got some odd process giving you extra CPU or HD load or something.. -
I got no OC on GPU or CPU......the temperature thing doesnt bother me as i know its in a safe range, its just more or less why does it cap out at 74?
Thanks.
