    Hello all,

My first post is about buying a m11x r2 with i7 processor. I primarily will be using this laptop for Visual Studio 2010 (Large projects) / 3d modeling-animation / Video editing and some gaming of course :D .

Does anyone know if this is the right machine for this (speed wise)?

Thanks for the help, sorry if this question has been asked before but couldn't find it for r2.

    Kind regards,
    Mark

My machine should be arriving tomorrow and one of the first things I plan to install is VS2010. I'm not a 3D guy, but I'll let you know how VS works under heavy load.

My expectations from experience with my current laptop is that it will run absolutely fine on the m11x r2. Oh, I should point out that mine will be running an i5, but I still expect it to perform fine.

this machine really lacks the cpu power to do what you want to do ... well it will do it but it will take a while to render your 3d modeling and video editing work.

if your not looking for a big laptop i would suggest you get a envy 14... you can couple it with a nice cpu and has a decent GPU. it also has probably one of the best screens out there with its radiance display.. i believe they start at $1099... but even the base model is more powerful then a fully speced out m11x

OK thanks for replies guys. I could live without the rendering because I could transfer it to my main PC, I guess modeling will be mostly gpu bound so that will be OK. Please do let me know rubenkraken how vs 2010 works because that's what I'll be using the most. Envy 14 is a nice machine indeed but not yet available here (Caribbean) and to be honest I just love the m11x looks also! But I'm going to investigate some more in envy 14. Thanks!

yah.for mere 25 bucks more you upgrade to fully powered i5 which is a lot faster than i7 640um. but then again, m11 is a lot smaller...so portability vs power. hinge problem vs no hinge problem

Some people who have ordered the m11x do not have a hinge problem. Just throwing this out there even though it was mentioned before, alot of people are concerned with this hinge problem because they are seeing complaints about it. People who don't have the hinge problem don't see a need in complaining or caring to vote against, as they do not have any problem. Therefore there could be a huge ratio against the hinge problem rather than equal or less than. For all we know it could be (No hinge Problem) 400:1 (Hinge Problem). But we just do not have that information.

    Hinge problem is negligable.

My m11x comes today and I will state whether there is a hinge problem with mine, I'm confident there will be no problem, but I will be posting nonetheless.

I think basicly I want to know if I can use the machine as a snappy VS 2010 development environment (including local sql server etc) which could replace my desktop. I don't want compiling to take ages haha

I just got VS2010 Professional installed and I don't have any large projects I can easily throw on here, but I created a windows forms project and the IDE itself is just as quick and snappy as my desktop (which runs a proper i5).

The project takes 0.27 seconds to build with nothing added to it. I added 25 forms and it took 0.32 seconds. I created 4 more projects and added 25 forms to each. Then I created 5 web apps and added 25 web forms to each of those. Then I did a clean and rebuild to make sure it was starting fresh.

    Time Elapsed 00:00:00.42
    Time Elapsed 00:00:00.51
    Time Elapsed 00:00:00.38
    Time Elapsed 00:00:00.35
    Time Elapsed 00:00:00.35
    Time Elapsed 00:00:00.43
    Time Elapsed 00:00:00.35
    Time Elapsed 00:00:00.31
    Time Elapsed 00:00:00.34
    Time Elapsed 00:00:00.31

Not the greatest stress test ever, I know, but a few seconds to build 10 projects with 25 forms each is fairly reasonable performance in my book.

Just for fun I put on a youtube video playing in HD. And put on an mp3. Then did a clean and rebuild on the solution above. The average times went up to the mid 40's. None of them went over 1 second, though.

    Edit:
Figured my config would be useful:
    i5, 4 GB ram, 256 GB SSD.

No OC. All factory settings in BIOS and what not, nothing special or fancy going on. How much, if any, the SSD factors into any of the above I am not too sure.
