Would this laptop run 3Ds max sufficiently? I'm an architecture student, and would be using it during class mostly for some 3D modelling and texturing. I wouldn't expect to do any rendering, but would the i5 variant be powerful enough to run max well or is it worth paying extra for the i7?

As I said, some fairly complex scenes would be involved, but no rendering as I'm not that unrealistic as to this laptops capabilities.

    Cheers

Well, considering an old P4+V3100 FireGL ran 3ds max 2010 okay, I think it's allright on the m11xr2. The i5 is fine, just pump it up with some overclocking and TurboStop from UncleWebb.

The 335m doesn't have a quattro mobile equivilent, AFAIK :(

Thats true, I used to run 3DS Max 2008 on my old Pentium 4, 2GB Ram, 256mb Card. I heard some people were having crashing issues with max though, probably just single incidents though.

On the R2, that is probably an issue with Optimus. MS Visual Studio from 2010 on has issues with nVidia Optimus, too (must be set to Intel GPU).

I would not go there... screen size, cpu power and everything else. If you want to do anything serious do not get the m11x for 3d work.

right. I forgot, 3ds max needs 1280x1024, iirc...or was that Softimage? I dunno, in Softimage 2010, I use a modded layout for that (one of the default options labeled 768...).

Its just like any other graphic stuff.. you want as much desktop space as possible because they take up a lot !! 1920x1080 is minimum is you wanna do anything serious, ideally you would go higher.

your best choice is to get a 24" / 30" external screen.

    ...

Also an ASUS VK246h and HP 2408w...

Either way, the 1366x768 screen isn't too bad of a hinderance. At this res, however, some of the longer propeties/options do get cutoff into a "scroll zone," which is annoying. A mouse is just above a necessity in softimage, IMO.
