I would like to ask you guys, if you were tested your m11x R2 for 3ds max. I would say, im pretty disapointed so far, because it freezes all the time. I bought this laptop especialy for occasional modeling a little rendering on the road. I was fascinated with that portability/power ratio.

No matter which renderer i use for viewport (Direct3D or OpenGL), no matter which driver i install for nvidia gt335m, still poor. I have absolutely new, out of the box
    m11x R2 i7
    8GB RAM
    640GB HDD
    Win 7 Ultimate
now connected to 24" HP LP2475w

Iv'e installed and tested 3DS Max 2011 and MAYA 2011

I tried default DELL's 257.30 driver, then newwest 260.99 from nvidia site, and also 265.90 (comunity built driver with punkbuster fix). I also installed newwest Directx11.

I didn't make any OC and on 3Dmark06 i only get 6012 points and WEI index also isn't well. (attached image)

I know that this graphic card isn't from quadro faimily, or that i should buy laptop with professional graphic card for this kind of work, BUT 1GB GPU with that parameters and DirectX 10.1 support shoud kick 3dsmax's , not freezing while im rotating simple cube in scene.

Im starting to think i have bad chip or something. What more, not even one game is running that fast as i saw on youtube reviews.

For example Need for speed: Hot Pursuit 2010 on 1336x768 and highest settings isn't fast at all, lagging and slowing down around every turn, or car collision - especially night scenes with wet road.
Is that normal ? What experiences do have you ?

Let me know your opinions, before i will restore factory settings or contact DELL support. Thank you

Heh according to Alienware the 3dmark youre getting is bang on for 06. Mind you its for DX9 performance.

Hot Pursuit should actually run like crap on the M11x. I'd like to see these videos (looking now). Im pretty sure I would have trouble with it even with a 10,000 in 06. Older games like pro street, and undercover I cant max on at that res.

The render problem sure isnt normal. Id like to see how this turns out as I run some similar software and wonder if I should look out for something like this in the future.

Edit - Saw one video, interesting. Ive been meaning to pick this game up looks like they have optimized it well.

Edit - Looked through the system requirements for 3dsmax 2011 while i dont think the 335m should kick its but it does seem to be well within the requirements. Even the older relabled GT 120 is listed as supported but not certified. Mind you they only bother to certify Quadros.

3ds max uses dx9 but the viewport has its own engine, you cannot compare game benchmarks and expect 3ds max to perform in the viewport. It's a beast on its on and a lot more dependent on the CPU than you think. The Atom processor is probably the least optimal cpu for 3d studio max.

    Just saying, im not surprised.

If viewport rendering is CPU dependent then give throttlestop a go. At the very least it will help with rendering.

EDIT: Also, make sure that the 335 is being used when running Max/Maya. It's quite possible that they're using the IGP instead. And your WEI and 3dmark scores are both normal.

I'm also having problems with max, have the same specs as the OP. Basically can't even open a file. If I try and click the menu bar it freezes "An error has occured. The application will now close" etc etc. I've disabled visual themes in properties, which fixed the problem on my M17x, but this seems to be performance based.

I have it overclocked to 160mhz, latest drivers from dell, and tried Open GL and all Direct X's. Even tried running 32bit Max instead of 64 just to see, nada. It should well meet the minimum system requirements so i don't understand why its crashing. I'm not expecting it to run perfectly but at least be able to open a file without crashing?

To the OP, did you manage to sort out the problem?

    Cheers

I have no experience with M11xR2 - yet I can confirm that my M11xR1 is virtually unable to handle 3ds Max 2010 - due to viewport lags and stuttering.

Moreover, same goes for Photoshop CS5 - the M11xR1 lags a lot when dragging, cloning, zooming - you name it, everything barely works.

Therefore I find it pretty reasonable that a M11xR2 won't handle 3ds Max 2011 - but then nobody promised it would. It is somewhat strange though, since my old Asus G2S had no problem with neither Max 2010 nor CS5 - and it was released in 2007.

I would think that the R1 would be fine for Photoshop CS5. Runs beautifully on the R2 and it's not really a CPU heavy application. Mine's set to OpenGL (normal) mode since it was installed.

telling 3ds max to work for integrated works for me, does not show viewports if its using the nvidia card. im also a 3dsmax user :) Games design ftw

I HAD the same problem, but I must of done one of two things right. I d-loaded Direct X 11 and installed that, and I tried this new application in under the 3ds max icon called change graphics mode, and set it to direct x 10 and clicked ok when the prompt window appeared as it was opening. I can see my viewport now. If there is any issues I come across I will post again.

using dx10 in your max viewport is painful for your viewport performance though...

you should check your optimus. Make sure that the discrete graphics is running while you use those programs.
