Just recently I noticed that my M11x-R2 is idling at over 50% memory usage. I have 4GB total RAM and right now 2.21GB of that is being used. Is that typical for Windows 7?

Admittedly I have a lot of processes running (Norton, Steam, Xfire, Thunderbird, etc) , but when I open the task manager and add everything up they only come to about 1.2GB, so what else could be using so much of my memory?

What a coincident. I have a M11XR1 with 4GB and it also says 58% memory usage.

Well your first problem is that you have Norton... Honestly, it's a TERRIBLE antivirus and has been proven to slow down computer performance by up to 25% (ish). First thing I'd do is uninstall that, get Microsoft Security essentials or AVG ( I prefer AVG, many people hate it, but I've been using the paid version for ages and have had no issues) and then see if your RAM usage has decreased. Also, try not to keep steam AND xfire running at the same time, they'll eat up your resources too.

I'm currently using VIPRE antivirus, takes less than 25% of CPU while scanning and the lifetime license is a great deal too!

If the OP's running on NAV up to 2000, I'd agree. But if it's from the last 3 years, it's unlikely. Granted, norton antivirus previous versions is a resource hog.. but I find the 2009 version up to 2011 have improved so much they don't fit your description.
