    Today i finally purchased an M11x r2, i7, 4GB, 500GB HD.... £999 Bargain! (Estimated Delivery 3rd Jan! :(

Anyway, im a bit stumped on dells pricing of memory, and so i need to be set straight.

Its £300 to upgrade to 8GB 800mhz Dual Channel, from the 4GB???

How can that be worth it when after browsing various sites, i can buy 8GB kits for less than £100.

Computer memory upgrades for Alienware M11x (Core i5/i7) Laptop/Notebook from Crucial.com

Can someone please explain to me the speeds etc... is the 800mhz that comes with the alienware the fastest?

crucial website says i can use pc3-8500, and pc3-10600

    Thankyou

It could be an error, or Alienware thinks people are stupid(Or the 8 gig upgrade is for people with more money than sense :D)

You can get 8 Gig's for way cheaper, I suggest upgrading it yourself anyway.

    1. The DELL memory is Hyundai branded (at least in my UK R2 it is)
    2. that 8GB from play.com is waaaaaaay too expensive. Here are much cheaper options from Scan.co.uk:

    Here's Corsair 4x2GB 1333 @ 9-9-9-20 for £90.

    Here's Corsair 4x2GB 1066 @ 7-7-7-20 for £92.

You won't be able to overclock beyond 1002.2 Mhz anyway, so personally I would recommend getting the slower RAM (even though it's £2 more expensive) simply because it has better timings, which in the m11x at 800-1000Mhz will perform better than the 1333 memory anyway.

Edit: the lower clocked RAM will perform better in synthetic benchmarks in the m11x (because of the more aggressive timings). Whether or not you will notice any real-world differences is debatable. ;)

you might be able to find kingston performance ram. Its 1066mhz with 5-5-5 timing i believe. Except the only ones ive seen are in 2gb dimms. Im not sure if they make the 8gb kits or not.

just wondering, why upgrade to 8 gb ram if you already have 4? my first m11x r2 i realized my mistake when i got it with 8 gb of ram (didn't need it, but i had a limit to spend and i wanted to spend it lols)... never used about 5 gb of it haha. but idk, if you want it, go for it (but i doubt that you'll need it)!

I will be using the laptop for various memory hungry applications, my job involves 3d/2d design, so will be using programs like 3d Max, cad, photoshop, illustrator, with many apps up and running at one time, I went for the m11x for the portability of it. And I figured the extra £100 for 8GB is well worth it
