So first problem I've been having is that the computer will completely lock up from time to time and if there was any sound at the time the last half second or so of it will loop continuously. The only way to get out of it is to hold down the alienware button until I force shutdown. I've noticed that this only happens when running on integrated gpu because whenever I'm playing a game it has NEVER happened. Is there a fix for this? It happens when when I'm doing almost nothing, watching a video on the web, or when I'm transferring large files from my external hd oddly enough.
My second problem has to do with whenever I put my computer in my backpack (in the sleeve of the backpack meant for laptops) and it shuts itself down. I recall that there is something that detects when a computer is dropped so it'll shut itself down to protect the hd, but it seems to be way too sensitive. Is there any way I can temporarily turn this feature off and turn it on when I want to (assuming that this is indeed the problem)?
Last problem isn't too big of a deal but every once in awhile I'll hear a beeping noise coming from the lower right corner of the laptop (where my right hand rests). This sound doesn't seem to be coming from speakers, but rather from inside the laptop. I've done a lot of searches on this and haven't been able to find anything that matches my exact problem. The beeping will happen at random intervals once it does start happening and I haven't really been able to figure out what could be triggering it.

I'm having that same exactly problem, the first one I mean. If anyone knows what's going on, please tell us.

Uninstall Freefall Protect Application. For the HDD protect.

I was actually cleaning up my program files folders and came across the program that is in charge of the Freefall protection. It's under STMicroelectronics>Accelerometer>FF_Protection. If you open up that program you can disable protection.
But yes, the first problem is the most pressing problem. I'm glad (but not really glad you also have the problem) to hear that my first problem isn't unique to only me and others have run into this problem and thus maybe someone out there has found a solution. -
Hi. I've been a silent witness on this site for quite some time now. So here's my first post.
I had the same problem with my M11X-R2. It would randomly lock up when transferring large files but also when doing little more than surfing the web with firefox. I tried reinstalling windows 7 umpteen times and tried to narrow the problem down to a specific driver or application to no avail even with a completely clean install with no other applications installed it would still lock up.
After speaking to alienware and running diognostics and everything coming back clear they came round and picked up my unit, sent it back within 10 days with a new motherboard and memory fitted and the rest is history. Never had the problem again. So I'm afraid it's most likely a hardware error the same as mine was.
Under warranty though so didn't cost a penny. -
There have been quite a few reports of lockups when transferring data across a wifi connection. For most people who have had this, replacing the Dell wifi card with something else is a relatively cheap fix.
-
Well my lock ups occur when transferring files through usb when using my external hd, not wifi. I guess I'll have to call Dell and possibly send it in the next time I'm home for break since this is my primary computer at school and I can't really afford to not have it for 10 or so days.
Also, my fix when my computer is plugged in is to force the 335 on by opening up a youtube video and pausing it. The plugin activates it because I never disabled it since the integrated gpu can't even handle some flash movies (it shows up as either green or tears all over the place). I have a feeling that my crashing may simply be due to how crappy the integrated gpu is (to the point where it can hardly take any load) since I never crash in high performance mode. It even locks up when my computer is idle and no programs are running sometimes. -
The IGP can handle pretty much any HD resolution playback out there including very high bitrate bluray. Something's not right with your rig. What drivers are you running?
-
Just an update since my I've been really frustrated lately (locking up while writing an essay and losing some work is not my idea of fun). Also, my computer locked up for the first time while playing a game the other day. All my video drivers are up to date from http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m11x/510346-modded-optimus-drivers-collection-r2.html so my integrated is 15.17.11.64.2202 listed at the top of that page and 335gt is 259.47 WHQL which is the latest non-beta driver that is listed on that page. This driver is modified so maybe that could be the issue?
EDIT: I just realized looking at that page again that there's an official driver on the bottom of the page with m11x r2 support so I'll be downloading that and see if that helps at all.
A few problems I'm having with my M11x r2
