does anyone own a nifty, hardware-based, monitor calibration equipment? i.e. Spyder Pro/Elite, X-Rite Display, Pantone Huey, etc...
specifically I am looking to see if someone that owns one of these could produce us (the AW community) an ICC color profile for windows/linux with the alienware M11x monitor, and post it here (anywhere!) for download? it would be hugely appreciated!
maybe even, if possible ... I've heard with the newer ones u can produce an ICC profile for different ambient light levels (direct sunlight, shade, lights off...), that'd be swell![]()
any takers? as I sadly don't have the $100-300+ to fork over to buy one, so I figured I'd see if it'd be possible to locate a do-gooder on the AW notebookreview.com forums to take the plunge.
-fingers crossed-

I have an old spyder2 sitting somewhere. I'll take a look and see what I can find. Have you used an ICC color profile before in Linux? I thought that X didn't support it.
-
well ya got me - nooo, I never have used ICC color profiles for linux, but shouldnt be too tough... these 2 links should suffice for a getting started with ICC color profiles and use with linux = Using lprof to profile monitors - ArchWiki and Linux HOWTO - N10 Wiki
I look forward to hearing from you -
Interesting, it looks like Argyll supports the Spyder2. I'll try that since I can't seem to find the software. How were you going to import it in Windows?
-
Couldn't get it to work right away on the M11x, so I've been testing it on my work computer. Takes along time, and when it finished it made everything really red. Running it through again. I'll run it through on the laptop after this is done.
-
Here's the one I just created. Not sure if it's the most accurate or not. Let me know how it looks to you.

wow... that makes a pretty significant difference - definitely adjusts the black levels a little more appropriately..
Thanks! -
thank you soleblaze, nice one.
most noticeble when under full brightness. used to burn my eyes, but not anymore after applying new color profile. -

uhh how do u use and apply the icc profile? i'm trying to see if i can calibrate my screen. i have spyder2 which supposedly doesn't work for win7. i tried calibrating my m11x screen last night just having the laptop sitting in front of my 24" calibrated dell ips moniter but had trouble, once i eyeball calibrated one picture the whites or black would be really off.

How can i install this profile?
I'm just done this:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/5020311/tempcrap1.jpg
but nothing happened -
Oh, it started working after i made calibration by myself.
-
Nope, its working in windows, but in games i have default profile. Why?
-
specifically, \Windows\system32\spool\drivers\color is where you want to place yr ICC file. the easiest way to do that was to RIGHT-CLICK the ICC file you created, and choose INSTALL PROFILE <= doing that will actually copy the file to \Windows\system32\spool\drivers\color.
one last thing. I am using yr ICC profile, but the new adobe photoshop CS5 complains ::
I just "use anyway" and checkbox "dont show again" and things work fine for me. figured I'd mention that if someone runs into it... not 100% sure why it complains though?
thanks soleblaze for providing the color profile, lookin' good! -
Guys, really, i don't understand how to enable this profile while in game. In windows its working, but if i turn on game it goes off
Colors are bleak and so on...
-
If possible can you run the calibration on both or whichever GPU you haven't run it on and post up a second profile? Other than that it looks great. -
Bumping thread.
For m11x R1, has anyone created an ICC profile for the case when nVIDIA GPU is in use?
If yes, please post a link. And how to automatically use the correct ICC profile for each graphics mode.
Thanks. -
I've setup a scheduled task that has multiple triggers which loads my profile and keeps my colors looking like they should, bypassing the gamma LUT bug 90% of the time. Doesn't work for games though.
EDIT: See this thread for additional tips. Specifically about disabling igfxpers.exe in order to eliminate one of the more frequent culprits in resetting gamma LUT. -
P.S.
I've offered to calibrate anyone's LCD who lives in the Dallas area so that we can provide some other profiles for the community. If anyone is interested then shoot me a PM. -
Ok sorry to bump an old thread but im confused by this guys.
I downloaded the ICC from post 6.
I followed post 17 to select the color profile in color management. I have seen no change in colors on my machine at all. It still looks washed out and bland on my m11x. What am I doing wrong?? -
No where in this thread is it stated which panel that profile was created on. That's of primary importance in determining whether or not you should be using it in the first place. If you have a different panel than the guy who did the profile then it's very likely going to make things looks significantly worse that it does without.
Find out what panel you have. If it's an AUO105C then check the link in my signature. I've provided an ICC profile and later in the thread detailed instructions on how to install and keep the profile active.
If you have another panel - SEC5441 or the LG - then I think you're out of luck. No one's posted profiles for them yet that I'm aware of. -
And I had my M11x with me! I wish I would've remembered, it would've been sweet to have met up and have you double check my calibration! I would've paid you too!
I took a pretty sweet picture of my wife playing with it while we were on the flight.
I was glad I bought it as I barely had enough room on the flight to game with. I don't think I could with anything bigger. It's easy to have a bigger machine to watch a movie or whatever, but if you want to play a FPS with a mouse and have movement, the M11x barely fit on both the different airlines I flew. AA and USAir
I'm just referring to gaming while in mid-flight.
Oh man, I'm from Phoenix and I thought that was hot, but I thought I was going to literally die while they stupidly had us waiting in the tunnel to the plane in 104 degree weather instead of keeping everyone at the gate until each group was completely seated. But, I'm home and alive, so it is what it is.
But man, Dallas, HOT. And I don't think I've ever seen so many baseball diamonds from the air in any city I've flown over so far. You Texans sure don't F around when it comes to America's past time.
Good Times... -
Too bloody hot for me to drive 45 minutes to the airport!
This year here has been a beating.
-
I install your M11x-ICC, how should I know if it work? I install this early in the morning and one of my eyes still close...can't find the color difference. -
