So, I bought AoE II today as it's one of my favorite games and I wanted some nostalgia.

Problem is, the Conqueror's expansion crashes at start every time, despite the normal game working fine.

From what I've gathered on the internet, this is caused by Alienwares themselves, many have this same exact issue and all are on either an M11x, M15x, or M17x.

What I'm trying to figure out is, what would be exclusive to AW laptops that would cause it to crash every single time?

I fancied a game on this last week, M17x wouldn't load on win 7, tried compatability modes etc with no joy.

Would be great if somebody had a solution

I have the same problem. I posted it some week ago, but I do not why someone deleted it   ...

I think that the only solution is to play it on a virtual machine, like VMware, or VirtualBox....

Same issue here. called microsoft and they said they no longer support the game. It has windows 7 issues. only way to play it with no errors is install vista or xp.

I'm pretty sure it's an Alienware issue and not a Windows 7 one.

The normal game works fine, it's only the expansion that doesn't work.

When looking for others with the same issue, they all happened to also be on AW laptops.

    Coincidence? I think not!

If you guys have 7 Professional, could you run it in XP mode?

This is also a problem for me on W7 Ultimate 64 Bit. I've yet to install XP mode, so I'll try it some time tomorrow and report back.

It is not possible to play it on Virtual XP Mode. The graphic card that XP mode emulates doesn't support Direct3d. It is a weak GC. So I repeat, the only solution is to play it in VMWare or VirtualBox.

I am almost sure this is incompatibility with some hardware of our Alienwares.
