Was searching around youtube for a way to get my tactx mouse and keyboard to flash with music (I did find a video that shows it being done) and came across this little gem... anyone got any info on this? Only thing I was able to find was in russian

Looks like it changes the keyboard lights to match the colors that are on the screen, giving it that ambient lighting that some bigscreen tvs have... looks pretty cool.

EDIT: Looks like we may have it working

Google translator is blocked at my work, wish I could use it... but it looks like there are a few downloads on their website, but I can read what they are.

    /Software/alienfx/ - lightpack - USB-????????? ???????? ??? ???????? ??????? ??????????? - Google Project Hosting

I'm still trying to figure out what files go where. According to the log, I'm missing the firmware and still searching that site for what/where it could be. So far, I placed the 2 header files in their respective folders in the Alienware folder in ProgramFiles and the dll too.

If I make any progress, I'll be sure to give y'all a heads up.

EDIT: The author of the files has (seemingly) put up all the files to COMPILE an executable on the codes site but the files are all over the place. Anyone want to collect them and compile it?

Well i'm from Russia (sort of), but still it doesn't get much more simple to understand how it works...
First of all - you need to add IsAlienFxMode to LightpackMain.conf (it appears after first launch of Lightpack.exe).
    You'll need this (program itself) Lightpack_sw4.1.0.exe - lightpack - ????????? ??? ??????? ? ??????? ???????? Windows (x86) - USB-????????? ???????? ??? ???????? ??????? ??????????? - Google Project Hos
    and this (libs needed)
    Libs_Win32_Qt4.7.zip - lightpack - ?????????? ??????????? ??? ??????? ?????????? ??? Win - USB-????????? ???????? ??? ???????? ??????? ??????????? - Google Proj
in a same folder to get program running... but log file still states, that it cannot find device needed. Oh well, still experimenting then.

    699a0b0b287e - lightpack - USB-????????? ???????? ??? ???????? ??????? ??????????? - Google Project Hosting

If you look at the change file list and open up the main.cpp in the "what was made different" view, you'll see that the new version has all these additions for the alienfx header files and other stuff. You can't just throw those files into the same folder as lightpack because these are source files. You'll have to put all these files together and compile them to an .exe before you go on.

If you look at the original view for the main.cpp, you'll see that a usb header file is already included and that's why the USB devices don't necessarily need anything extra files wise.

In the post here Бета-версия софта 4.7.0 - Лайтпак: обсуждение пl
there is a link for a new, beta soft (4.7), which is already compiled for win, but still, it doesn't seem to work with alienware (developers state, that they simply don't have anything to test this feature on). But still to activate it, you'll need to add IsAlienFxMode to LightpackMain.conf. This parameter keeps disappearing for me each time, so I made changes and made this file Read Only. Still no luck though.
Also you'll need to use AVG color on all Leds option.
And you can disable AERO to seriously improve perfomance (doesn't matter yet, cuz it doesn't work).
BTW i've got R2, maybe someone with R1 is willing to test it?

also being able to kinda read russian is a plus.

I have a r1 that I can download some of the files to on saturday and try some things out.

Thank you Greywind for that link! I figured out what files we need to use.

    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1089880/Lightpack AlienFX.zip
Extract these files to a folder and run the Lightpack.exe file.

This is my private dropbox. If anyone knows a better place to upload this, please tell me. Enjoy!

EDIT: OP, please add this link to the opening post so people can easily see it.

EDIT-EDIT: I must say, this thing is very entertaining. I have about 20 backgrounds on my desktop that change out every 10 seconds and they're all very different colors so it's a very cool effect to see the keyboard match the main colors of my background.

Cant wait to get home and try this out!

I wonder if it will control my keyboard and mouse too :)

@ OP, you can omit all my quotes from the first post, because they aren't really needed, just include thehelios link from his dropbox, as it totally works.
@ thehelios, good job, you've managed to put everything together properly, the thing in which I failed :D Played with it for a bit - works for me, looks fun but needs some optimal-zone tweeking and stuff.
BTW i've contacted authors of this program, still waiting for an answer, maybe they have something more on their way. If you'll need something translated from program homepage - just bump me.

I can confirm the program works on M18x but takes too many resources and slows down the system. is there a way to optimize it?

    Install this
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1089880/Lightpack AlienFX.zip

Then after its installed run the program, there will be a dark half moon icon in the bottom right (or a sun) right click that and turn it on. You can also adjust the settings in there. The colored boxes can be made larger or smaller by clicking on the edges and moving the sides.

The program isn't running as efficiently as it can because it still has resources looking around for USB components and whatnot. I'd help the developer clean up the code but way too busy at the moment for that. Are there any other takers?

This will happen every now and then. You've got to remember, this is super buggy and really beta. You can try removing it completely and copying over the contents from the zip again.

Bringing this back from the dead.

I ordered up a lightpack PCB board, 10 leds and the newest version of lightpack.

The new system says it works with alienfx, but again, still in beta. Should be interesting to see how she does.

I am going to run the tests on my x51, then the final install will be in my hangar18.

The interface is a USB connection that goes into the lightpack board. It then outputs to 10 leds.
