    oakley, you said regarding sales,

"It may imapct sales, but at a minimal level."

Can you please provide us Dell data on how many sales where "missed" due to noise.

I just wondered how you know its "minimal". I don't want to see you loose credibility here.

I personally would think it would be huge. The OP here is annoyed by it.

The majority of people buying a system like this would not be concerned with fan noise. Especially considering when playing a game, most people have the volume cranked up, or headphones on.

No information could be provided from any firm to indicate "Sales lost by sound/noise" that would be reliable on any level. And even if I did have this data, I wouldn't share it with you. Considering you state you have data, that you don't really have.

I mean, I see your words, but they are starting to look like little blobs of poo steaming on my screen. I want to clean it off.

oakley1261, you have basically hijacked this thread by jumping on my one comment regarding heat and redesign.

You even made my financial abilities an issue.

Please stop your personal attacks on me just because I ask a $70 billion dollar per year company to improve one little ole laptop case.

Can you please allow the OP to get back on topic. Please.

That's the big difference. The R2 is fast after you overclock it. The R3 runs at a similar speed as soon as you plug it in. The reviews that are published are never with an overlocked R2 so it doesn't give a very good idea of what the R2 is really capable of.

My last thread brought up the same issues as those here were I say to Dell, a 70 billion dollar per year company, please improve a little laptop.

The thread you refer to went to heaven, for religious reasons :)

OP, please continue. Oakley, behave now.

that is my everyday 100% stable clocks, i use all the time. i never run stock. and for benching i can clock 20 mhz higher in everything. in 3dm06 i get 700-800 more points in the HDR/SM3.0 then a stock GT540 does.

and i have my cpu pin-modded @1.73ghz. BUT once i do the 2ghz mod im sure i can get 8.3k in 3dm06, just a guess.
but the r3 stock is pretty good. no doubt. i believe in getting the absolute most outa my system, thats why i wont upgrade til january. the R1 is still a very powerful machine. even better with mods.

    Idle temperature

    Core 1 45c
    Core 2 43C

    HDD 31C

While idle, integrated video is engaged so CPUID did not show any temperature. The earliest detection of a video card and shows the temperatuer by CPUID was somewhere between 60 to 65C.

After 65C and up the fan is on full throttle until it goes back down below 60-65c.

Wow. You're gonna have to tell me which overclocking software you use! I could never overclock my MacBook Pro since the cooling system isn't made for it and especially since it's out-of-warranty. Makes the R1 seem like a good idea.

the R1 is a really good idea, if you have experience with mods and soldering.
i use nvidia system tools 6.06. you install that and its in the nvidia control panel.
also i did a voltage mod, so im running at 0.95v.

    Hi there,

First i really dont understand why some people wants always claim that they have the biggest ...i thought they were ugly Vaio or Asus fanboys who needs to spit or AW but no, in fact most of them own a M11x series...plz how old are u guys ^^

Anyway right now i wait for my R3 and i love the good looking of this small laptop...yeah i dont want a new design...go buy the M14 or 17 x if someone dont like 11x.
I have had a D901C and it was loud at certain point. In game not so much but not as quiet in idle.

Sandy Bridge is really "versatile" and have a long range of action.

For me the small form factor, sturdy chassis and good looking have make my choice, and if this r3 wasnt out, i certainly check for R2 instead.

For the noise, its obvious the laptop become noisy in load with this kind of components on it... stop kidding us plz, its just not a M17x...the fact is in idle its quiet so all is just normal and good after all.

As long as the fan doesn't go crazy at full blast while running the integrated card and just surfing or office editing.

That was a huge annoyance on the r1 and i had my r1 from April of last yr until August so i just ignored it but gave up after the fan keeps coming on idle doing nothing like it has a mind of its own.

So by Howards review so far on the r3, the fan is looking good. I don't care about the fan running at full blast when benchmarking or gaming.

Howard how does the R3 fan during gaming compare to the R1 during gaming? I find the R1 quite loud at load.

Is all you do is take things people say directly out of context?

You come across as a real bag when someone doesn't completely agree with you.

    From benchmade42,

"the fan is looking good. I don't care about the fan running at full blast when benchmarking or gaming"

This statement, taken in conext, is another clear example of low standards and low expectations.

R1 - sharper fan noise it felt

    R3- louder

winner = R3 = no random fan on and off quiet during idle

That doesn't indicate low standards. It's understanding that it's doing what it is supposed to do. We don't live in the year 2200 when computers are as big as a Micro SD card, and have passive cooling.

this is getting pretty funny :D

the design of the m11x case is just fine for now. but maybe in the next revision they would change it up slightly. what other computer do you know of thats the size of the m11x, but looks as cool?

ajslay thanks for saying exactly what I have been saying. Be prepared to be called a Troll for saying what you just said though. Sorry.

When they call you a Troll just say "No you. Troll.".

This seems to ward them off.

I'll say it again, I love my R2 i7. Its the best computer I have ever owned. But it has to change and the R3 is not worth paying full price.

no problem. my R1 is also the best pc iv ever owned. i would pay at the most $800 for an R3.
also, it would be logical to me that they change the case slightly with every revision so we can atleast tell the difference between them when there set side by side.

rofl =P hmm im only 17 so yeah, wonder how that would work out.
but the only differences between all the revisions is the color. R1 being silver, or black, no soft touch. R2 soft touch black. and R3 soft touch nebula red.

Thanks so much for posting the battery info. I'm doing my daily forum session and you're the first person with an R3 who's given real world battery figures. Even as estimates, they're the type of info I want to know most of all. Much appreciated.

Thanks also for the screen info and comparison to R1 and R2. If I understand you correctly, there's not enough difference to make you notice and decide against an R3, right?
Compare to the RGBLED on my S-XPS 16, almost any screen will look worse, (much like the comparison to your mac) so I'm prepared for that. I just wasn't prepared for a terrible screen.

I have requested that Oakley end the baggery earlier and he agreed however he started again.

I will report him to the mods.

Do not leave this forum. Since being here I have gained extremely valuable info.

And speaking of, I wouldn't be surprised if a fresh application of some TP would help with the noise.

Here's some more subjective and qualitative info on the battery:

I unboxed my m11xr3 yesterday around 4pm. Turned it on and started setting up windows and I think the battery was around 80%.

The battery lasted till about 10 pm. I wasn't using it nonstop but I did install lots of programs (office 10, iTunes, avg Internet security, etc) as well as messed with the alienfx for about an hour. Also played some music for about 30 mins.

It was prolly idle for about two of those hours, but making it that long on the stock charge is pretty good IMO.

No problem at all! anything I can do to help. From previous posts, I guess we established the battery life is decent.

The screen as far as I can tell is comparable to R1 and R2. If I were to tell you I can tell which one was better or worse I would be lying. Is it terrible? not at all :) Also yea.. I'm sure it would look worse compare with your xps 16 as it is compare to my macbook pro but we know that going in :)

It's all good bro, we have our differences and can agree to disagree :)

As for the fan noise. It is louder than R2's @ max level and I would much prefer it be on the same level as R2. However with faster CPU, faster RAM and a video card that is faster and double the video memory I guess I wouldn't want the machine to fry. Even though I would hope it can be quieter while taxed, I guess that's what my razer headphone is for.

Other people that received the machine, feel free to chime in on the fan noise :)
