If you haven't previouslyhad your hinge replaced by DELL you may do so, even out of warranty.

Dell to repair broken hinges on Alienware M11x systems globally - Direct2Dell - Direct2Dell - Dell Community
Just follow these instructions. I got my system back in a week. Very satisfied. -
Does dell still replace the screen if the hinges are broken from the assembly becouse here it says that if the warrenty is past 12 monts of the original end date they won't
(and the hinge of my m11x broke a month ago but the warrenty has ended on 06-2011)

Hi Luis,
I have the same broken hinge issue with my Alienware m11x. It was purchased in the US in 2010 but I live in the Philippines. I don't have a problem sending it in though.
Since its past warranty, what's the best way for me to get the m11x repaired?
Thanks in advance -

I have a laptop with this reference and has the hinge problem for first time.
Could you please help me through the process of getting it fixed as mentioned in the following Dell web page?
Alienware M11x R2 Hinge Problem - Alienware Forum - Alienware Club - Dell Community
In the process at the moment, I send my laptop from Colombia to USA, because Dell told me than they didn't have support on my country.
After that I send to USA asuming shipping costs, and contact across a friend with tech support They told that they cant repair because dont have parts for this unit and offer a 3rd company for the repair asuming personally the cost.
I would like a professional answer about this, I always like Alienware, and recommended the brand to my friends, and now I felt sad about my laptop that I cant use almost a year ago since this the problem of hinge began.
Thanks for the attention and on time answer. -
Is there any chance I can get my hinge fixed on my m11x R2? I know it's been a while since this thread started, but this hinge issue just started up a couple of weeks ago.
Thanks. -

I have an M11x (original model). The screen was fixed once under warranty years ago but is badly in need of another replacement. Hinges are completely broken. -

I got an entire screen assembly brand new for $52 on e-bay. The hinge is the upgraded one (part number M5W7C). Make sure the assembly you buy has this part number. I would also not recommend replacing just the hinge. The screen cover is attached around the screen with double sided tape that you will have a hard time removing and replacing. Not to mention the dust that will collect between the LCD and the cover will drive you nuts. Just make sure the screen assembly you buy matches the color of your M11X.

I'm still a little disgusted that Dell won't fix these anymore. I can understand maybe drawing a line to where it wouldn't be covered under warranty, but to not even offer to fix it at all ... even for cost of time and materials ... is hard for me to swallow.
I don't feel really comfortable with this repair, so although I could likely find the part on eBay or elsewhere, it doesn't really help me much.
The Alienware name has been severely tarnished in my view. This is supposedly the premier Dell brand ... the best they have to offer consumers. However, this model has an acknowledged problem with the hinges that they now refuse to repair simply because I was "fortunate" that mine lasted longer than some others.
Stand behind your products, Dell! Or at least give me a good option to get it fixed and not just leave me swinging in the wind. -
Honestly, it's a very easy fix to do yourself, and it will not cost that much. It will be around $70 shipped for a new assembly, and the swap will take about 15 minutes to complete. You'll just need a small philips screwdriver. Just make sure to order an assembly with the new hinge design with part number M5W7C. The M11X is not that old, but it's also not a current model so it's expected that Dell will eventually stop supporting it. At least the parts are not crazy expensive and there are plenty of resources online (like here
) where you can always get help.

Is this the part that is required? If so, are you aware of any step by step instructions?

That is the assembly you want because it already has the new reinforced hinge built-in, but I am not sure if that's the exact one you need though because you will want it to match the color of your M11x. Here is a list of the LCD assembly part numbers that come with the new hinge (credit goes to DellChrisM for this list):
* Soft Black WLAN LCD Assembly (Dell Part Number 40GMX)
* Soft Black WWAN LCD Assembly (Dell Part Number 8JJT2)
* Black WLAN LCD Assembly (Dell Part Number 4FFHC)
* Black WWAN LCD Assembly (Dell Part Number R2Y7G)
* Gray WLAN LCD Assembly (Dell Part Number YMM9R)
* Gray WWAN LCD Assembly (Dell Part Number KKH9C)
Soft Black is the rubberized matte black, while plain "Black" is the semi-glossy metallic black (with little red glittery specs) also known as Cosmic Black.
The only difference between the WLAN models and the WWAN models is that the WWAN models have two extra antenna wires for people who uses the mini pci express slot with a broadband wireless card. I'd say if the price difference is not too much, try to get a WWAN model (it won't hurt to have two extra antenna wires available).
As far as instructions, here is a teardown video.
Trust me it's not that hard to do yourself. Just make sure to label the screws you remove so you know where they need to go during re-assembly. Good luck. -
