    Compare Intel® Products

The U5400 doesn't make sense to me since the R1 uses a different chipset (i3/i5 vs Core 2 Duo).

    Wouldn't this be an R2?

I think you mean Pentium SU4100. It's pretty much the same thing as the SU7300 without virtualization support.

    Yes. This is a R2. The U5400 is a 18W i-core CPU in m11xR2. The U7300/U4100 is a 10W C2D CPU in a m11xR2.

Not sure which will be faster. An i5/i7 R2 is the one to get that can be Throttlestop turbo-boosted + setPLL/setfsb overclocked.

The U5400 is similar to a Core i3 so it doesn't use Turbo Boost and it also doesn't support hyper threading so it is only 2 Cores, 2 Threads. That's a crippled CPU but at $599, it looks OK. It should let you overclock the base clock in the bios to 166 MHz and with some luck it might go higher yet with the help of SetPLL but it is only using a 9 multiplier.

At some tasks, the U5400 could be 15% to 20% faster at the same MHz compared to the SU7300 but the SU7300 will likely clock a little higher. At the end of the day, they are probably very similar in performance.

    thanks for the replies!

great to hear that the u5400 can at least match the performance of the su7300. would be great to know if it can be faster. any benchmarks from u5400 owners with stock overclock or NBR overclock settings?

still undecided if i should be getting this or wait for another $100 discount on dell outlet. got my m11x (just sold it) in the sig for $550 with tax. always wanted soft touch black but this deal after tax would be $650.

Although I'd think the R1 would have better battery life.

This is very good to know. I thought it was a significant downgrade, but I guess not :D

The U5400 doesn't use hyper threading so battery power consumption could be very similar to a Core 2.

If it's anything like an r1's CPUs, there is an overclocking option in the BIOS/CMOS setup.

The R2 has a BIOS option to OC from 133Mhz->166Mhz BCLK. Users can then use setPLL or setfsb to go further, all the way up to the point of system instability. One R2 users has his ramped up to 197Mhz BCLK.

U5400-1.2@133, x9 would become U5400-1.5@166 with the OC option enabled. If can get it to 197Mhz BCLK then it would be U5400-1.77@197.

R1 users can get theirs to 1.9-2.1Ghz but requires soldering to make it possible.
