Anyone tried replacing their HDD with WD 1TB ?

I know the western digital drive is only 5400rpm but will it negatively impact much on performance? and will it also fit since although it is 2.5" ...i think it is about 3mm thicker....anyone tried?

Am choosing between WD 1TB and Seagate Momentus XT Hybrid Drive 500gb

any other suggestions are welcome as long as it wont exceed $200 which is my estimated budget for a replacement drive.

I am looking at the Momentus XT as an upgrade and basicaly this is what seems to be the trade off... I am thinking of waiting to see if a 2nd version comes out or competition kicks in.

    Good
    Fastest 2.5" HD

    Bad
Uses more power and will reduce battery time quite a bit
    Noisier, the drive keeps "clicking"

the actual spec is 5200rpm not 5400rpm.

The 3mm thicker is iffy. A standard 2.5" drive is about 9.5mm thick, so an additional 3mm is about 33% thicker.

In general, a 5400rpm drive is going to be noticeably slower than 7200rpm drive. The Seagate Momentus XT is faster than your typical 7200rpm drive, but slower than an SSD - it performs about the same as a Western Digital Raptor 10,000rpm hard drive.

If you want performance, one common option that people use is to put a fast drive as their main boot drive (OS, apps, games), and use a larger, slower, cheaper external USB drive to store their documents / music / media / videos / .

I dont have my M11x yet, but I do have the Momentus XT in my netbook and it had little to no effect on the battery life.

It may be different with the M11x, but the speed increase is noticeable and the trade off is negligible.

I look at it this way: If it takes 2 minute to boot with the standard HDD, and 1 minute to boot with the Momentus, you save time. If each operation takes 20-30% less time to process, you save time.

With a standard HDD in my netbook, I would see 7.5-8hrs and upon switching to the hybrid I would get 7.25-7.5 hrs battery life...

I haven't noticed any appreciable change in battery life since switching to the XT.

    i wouldn't say fastest 2.5" HD considering true SSD's are also 2.5"

There is enough space, but I the sata/power adapter that the M11x uses could require modification.

To be honest guys the momentus xt is the best bang for the buck atm, it performs almost as fast as an ssd...

I was about to buy one but one of my friends gave me this intel g2 160gb ssd with a price I couldnt deny...

This ssd feels FAST but come on I wouldnt pay $380 USD for it...

Agreed, the Momentus XT at 500GB and ~$120 is hard to beat. Plenty of space for a laptop, velociraptor speed, and affordable price. Its not perfect, but its pretty hard to beat.

I don't think that there will be a 2nd version, or competition. The only reason the Seagate Momentus XT exists is because SSD's are expensive. The "competition" to the SMXT will be the falling prices and increasing capacities of SSD's

I don't know. The cheapest 500gb SSD on newegg is $1400. It's going to be a long time until they're reasonably priced, which means other companies coming out with competition to the SMXT makes sense. Why let Seagate take all the profit?

If Intel takes another stab at Turbo Memory it will essentially be the same thing.
Intel's Braidwood was suppose to be the next generation of Turbo Memory with SLC Nand flash up to 16GB on the board. Similar to Turbo Memory 2.0 where you could pin commonly used applications to the Turbo Memory. I'm sure Intel would love to have another item to bundle with their cpu's.
