I'm sure some of you knew this, but I just finally decided to try it out, but you can load your old replays through the SC2 beta by just dragging and dropping the replay into your SC2 shortcut icon. It will just load into the game and you can watch.
So from here we can benchmark SC2! I've been curious how well the R2 plays SC2 over the R1.
things to note:
Speed of replay affects performance. If I have it on 6x fastest the FPS drops a lot, like 10-15FPS range but on slowest it goes to 60+ and fastest like 40FPS. So we want to keep that consistent. I typically play a normal SC2 match on "fastest" game setting, so maybe we can use that for a dependent variable here.
Replays are really small files so if anyone has a good replay to upload, go for it. Since I haven't figured out a way to skip to specific times in replays, it's best to keep them shorter, maybe 5-10min maximum. And try to keep the camera at the same point and just do a fraps benchmark so it just logs and then automatically records avg, min, and max fps.
it would be easier to use global "low" "medium" and "highest" settings for FPS recordings, and probably do it at highest possible res which is 1360x768-32 within SC2.
---
I did a quick run on a 4v4 replay I had at early game maybe 5 minutes in and on all low settings I was getting 50-60FPS (but it looked like crap, SC1 graphics!!), on medium I was getting 30-40FPs and highest ultra I got 25-30fps but dips to 20s and teens happened briefly. I will play around some more with more benching by turning down all CPU based settings like physics, effects etc and see if this helps at all.
Anyone up for some benching? Glad we can finally bench the R2. Just pull up some decent short replays with some action in it and we can compare some numbers by using some default settings.
I'll check back later after I run some replays of mine that might be worth using, I have quite a few.. your replays can be found in your documents --> Starcraft II beta-->replays folder.

^sooo all in all on medium/ultra does it run smooth ? being able to play a game without hiccups?
-
so here's my first short series of runs
I uploaded the replay here. I just left it on red player (CuN) and started a fraps benchmark at 0:20 and stopped at 4:00minutes. I chose this replay because it was a 4v4 map so there are more things going on in the background, even though you cannot see it directly on screen, the CPU still has to work with it.
If I had more time I would benchmark more in the late game but I do not know how to skip to points in time.
I left textures at ultra. Then for graphical global settings I did LOW, MEDIUM, and then ULTRA. Here are my results:
LOW:
Min Max Avg
31 63 56.835
MEDIUM:
Min Max Avg
25 58 50.209
HIGH:
Min Max Avg
13 30 25.902
Also if anyone is curious about temps while running SC2 replays (I notice my fans kick on highs) max CPU: 47/49C and GPU max was 56C. -
Finally! I will try when i got home ill give it a go too. I have the R2.
How do you run it as a test that gives your min. max and avg fps? -
On fraps set a hotkey for min/max/avg selected under fps tab. Hit the key, the counter disappears while it records. Hit the key again and it stops and puts an excel file where you have fraps installed.
-
Fraps is not a good way of doing it though since it eats a lot of fps by itself...
-
hmm not sure if you're that familiar with fraps. Fraps VIDEO recording does. The FPS counter does not. Not sure why this is confused by so many people. I'm not recording video here, just using the counter and counter benchmark.
-
You could be right.. but even that (3 years ago when I did play with it last time
) had an affect but of course lots have changed since
but doesn't sc2 have a "show fps" under settings? of course you can't do min/ max / avg that way.
-
naw fraps does nothing to your fps just for counter. I've tested it against in game FPS counters etc. It's perfect. Just using it to record will knock you down a lot. But yeah it does the min/max/avg for you too in a nice excel sheet =)
Anyone up for Starcraft II benchmarking? R1 & R2 come in!
