The Alienware M11X does not come with a cd drive so I was wondering if my desktop cd drive could function as my laptop's cd drive? If so, what cord or program would I need to install? Please guide me through it as I'm a total noob. I am a bit tight on cash and rather not buy an external cd drive.

    Thanks in advance :D

What do you use a CD drive for now a days?
Best to buy an extrenal DVD drive, you can get a samsung or asus one for about 30 bucks if you really need one.

I think it can only work via USB or Firewire

Well it is possible to share your desktop's cd drive over a local network with your m11x, although when I tried it with an Windows XP desktop I had some trouble. I believe that is is easy to do between to windows 7 machine though.

The main reason I need it is because I enjoy purchasing hard copy games since I don't have a credit card to purchase games online. Could I use a USB to transfer the game to my laptop when I install it on my desktop or...?

Well the issue you may run into then is that a lot of games will require the cd to be able to play so if you did install them then you might not be able to run them.

If you don't have a CC, simply use Paypal to purchase games :) You can link it to your bank account. Virtual gaming discs are the wave of the future. No more scratched/broken/lost discs :)

I also thought that but doesn't the laptop need some sort of image? I'm pretty sure it has to say that something is in "DVD Drive Z" or whatever. Or does the M11X not need a image?

A simple google search of no cd patch should fix that ( assuming you have a legit copy) and just download a digital copy of the product you already owned for free

    What he said.
Just buy the game and use the no CD-patch.
It's legal so long as you have the actual copy of a game.
Also, some games can be bought as a hard copy, but don't need the CD.

For example, Call of Duty Black Ops will not need the CD after you install it. It will just require you to log on to steam.

EDIT: I'm not completely sure but:

I think all the games listed there can work the same way Call of Duty Black Ops work.
