Optimization Steps 2,5 & 6 can be done even if you do not have an SSD. I can only imagine how slow it is without an SSD because I used mine for months before installing this essential upgrade component. You can read more about this on my other post HERE The following method greatly improved the speed and usability of my M11x R2

1). First thing is to do a fresh install on your SSD if you haven't already. Do not clone from your old drive.

2). Install all drivers except for the following
    - Realtek Drivers - ALC665 - The default ones installed by w7 work better without any glitches
    - Synaptic TouchPad - The mouse-pad works much better without these drivers

3). If you are running an SSD make sure you have the best firmware drivers flashed. You can view threads discussing the most optimized FW drivers for your ssd by searching google or even your ssd manufacturers forum pages.

4). Install ssd tweak it activates the most optimized settings for w7 & your SSD with one click of a button download here

5). Click the windows button and type in msconfig Go to the Boot tab and for
    - Timeout: change the value from 30 seconds to 3 seconds
-Under Advanced options change the number of processors to your max so from 1 change it to 2 if you are running a core 2 duo and to 4 if you are running an i5/i7

6). Disable the following using the command msconfig Keep in mind it took me a while to figure out what I could do without but I am no expert just giving you my opinion on exactly what I disabled.
    - Alienware Fusion Service
    - Bluetooth Service - (if you don't use bluetooth just disable this it wastes power and resources)
    - Stardock WindowsBlinds (I believe this is only an option in the new R2 version but I could be wrong)
    - DW WLAN Tray Service
    - FF Install Filter Service

    UNDER THE STARTUP TAB Disable
    - Alienware AlienFX
    - Alienware On-Screen Display
    - InstallShield Update Service - both of these
    - Bluetooth Software
    - Stardock MyColors

Let me know your thoughts or if you are having any trouble implementing these changes. Also if you have any better tips let us know.

After doing this it cut my windows startup time from 40 seconds down to 23 seconds using an OCZ Limited Edition SSD Reads of 270 max and writes of 250 max :) Compared to my previous Intel G2 SSD it kills it. You can see a video of some previous Alienwares and their startup times (i7-720QM M15x 7200 rpm vs R1 M11x Intel G2 SSD vs i7 920XM extreme M15x OCZ Agility SSD) HERE

How does the touchpad work "better" than when the Synaptics drivers are installed? Do the Win7 drivers give you two-finger scroll?

EDIT: And what glitches have you had with the Realtek audio drivers?

Good initiative, couple of points though...

recommending services disabling/enabling is very hard because it's very personal.
I for instance do not have half of the services you mentioned (ok, i have the M17x, but still)

Also, for people that mostly use an external mouse it is VERY recommended to install the synaptics driver from Dell as it's the only driver that can disable the touchpad when an external mouse is connected thus preventing the cursor from jumping to weird places when you type.

    Just my 5 cents ;)

I didnt know it had multi-touch. I have not installed these drivers since I was having problems with them on my i7 M15x. I use an external mouse and the mouse never hops around.

I would also get better performance and and my BSOD issues went away after using the factory w7 drivers from not installing Realtek drivers. I would have these issues from my MSI, Dell and Asus computers previously. So it is a matter of preference. My M11x is fine with these settings but for others it might be different. Just letting you know what I did.

My OCZ Agility 128GB SSD seems to be benching low. The average read is only 153MB/s compared to my Intel X25 SSD on another computer which has an average read of 232MB/s.. Maybe I need to install those Matrix drivers or something.. This is a brand new build on my M11X.

I moved a TorqX drive from another computer to the M11X, and my read benchmarks went from over 200MB/sec to 150MB/sec on the M11x. Havent put it back in the other computer yet to test, but it is strange.

On my OCZ Limited Edition in my M11x R2 I am currently getting a max read of 255 and a max write of 236. Keep in mind this benchmark was done with my drive at 98% full capacity.

This new Sandforce drive controller on the LE is fast
