I'm awaiting the arrival of my m11x and I'm looking for a slot-load multi-purpose cd drive for my computer. It doesn't need blu-ray compatibility, but it is a big plus.

I don't want to spend more than $80, but if there's say a difference of maybe $20 for more features, or maybe the $80 is the same as something $50, please let me know.

I'm going to be using this to make my recovery disc, read/write CD's to install games. I'm also going to be using it to burn CD's and make movie DVD's.

The reason why I'm asking is because I've heard some reviews where there are portable external cd drives that overload the USB ports of some computers, and since I dropped down 1k+ for this laptop I want to be sure it is compatible and protected...

    Please suggest me some products..

PS. I really do prefer slot-load type cd drives, but if there's a tray-type cd drive that's about the same for cheaper/better... please let me know too.

    Hi,

I've recently picked up an m11x as well and the drive that I'm using for it is a Samsung SE-S084C Slim External USB DVD Writer. It's fantastic and does what it is supposed to. It doesn't require any external power & just draws what it needs from USB (it doesn't overload it whatsoever). it is also available for a rather good price (depending on where you are in the world).

    Hope that helps.

How much was that? Is it a slot-load or tray type drive? Sounds very interesting.

    I came across the
    SE-T084M that's a slot-load from Samsung. But it's around 100 bucks and I surely cannot afford that.

I wish I could order online but I think I can only purchase it at Fry's or Best Buy and their cheapest external drive is around 55 bucks... so I'm thinking about dropping another 20 in for the SAMSUNG SE-T084P [Slot-in Type] so that I can keep it x)

That's nice! Looks like my portable Targus DVD-ROM drive, only better. I couldn't pass up mine only because it was $20 bucks off buy.com. I was being penny-wise and pound-foolish that day.
