Was just over on the m18x board and saw the "Bigfoot Killer wifi" cards... Anyone know if they will work on a m11x r1?
Killer? Wireless-N Performance
Edit, after reading the reviews it seems to be alot of magic beans...
-
I'm pretty sure that these will work on our m11xs. The hard part is actually getting one of these things. Last time I looked only UK companies were selling these stand alone, otherwise they would come bundled with new systems. As soon as I can get my hand on one of these I will let you know how it goes.
-
stick with a good intel card youll be happier. and if you have that i'd buy a better router instead.
-
Well I ended up ordering the card.
I will do some before and after tests to show my results.
I have a intell 6200 card right now, but also have my stock dell card too.
I can do tests on all 3 cards to give you a idea of how it works compaired to the others. -
Would be highly appreciated. Thanks for taking the plunge.
-
Any suggestions for wifi benchmarking software? Never really done any benchmarking before so im not sure what to use.
-
-
I will try that one out when the card comes in. Going to use my works t1 line for testing, so my numbers may be a little bit high.
-
Got the bigfoot card installed last night, seems to be pretty fast. I tested it in just general web browsing last night before bed against the stock dell card.
Today I will be running netstress on my works t1 to compair the 6200 and the bigfoot card after I eat my golden grahams treats bar....
results in a few hours.
Ok so netstress just seems to stick in a loop with "reciever"... so I am doing a more traditional test.... steam downloads!
I have 7 steem games downloading right now. All 7 games are downloading at 25-30 kb/s
With the stock dell card I get most of the downloads at around 15kb/s and one or 2 at a higher number.
the intell 6200 card runs about the same as the new bigfoot card.
I think a real test will be to see how games play online.
Overall though I am pretty happy with it sofar, only been running it for a few hours, but only for downloading games, all the game downloads are even, no more having one game download at 25kb/s and the rest at 2kb/s
So now its been running for a few hours. All of my steam downloads have leveled off, 7 games all downloading at 38kb/s. Nothing is dropping below 37kb/s and there are no drops or stalls like I would have with the intell 6200. -
aw, man, ejohnson, why you always make thread that I am very tempted to try?
btw, how're things going with your range mod and touchscreen? -
Pretty good, ordered the 11.6 inch touch screen the other day. Hoping it comes in soon. I will be testing it out first on my working m11x, then moving the parts to the tablet case. Still holding out for the r1 prices to drop below 400$ to get one to make the final mod.
One of the things on this card thats really cool is that I can cap download speed per program. So since I am using my works line to dl steam games, I have it capped so I dont use all the bandwidth. But I have firefox set to dl at the highest speed possible, so pages load fast even with 7 games dl'ing right now.
EDIT: I would like to point out that I ordered the card from ebay also, it was about 45'ish bucks shipped. -
Damn you ejohnson, one more item in the "To Buy list"! hehehehehe
I still wonder, is it better this Bigfoot killer, and is there any incompatibily issue with older routers, also do you guys think this one is better or that Intel Advanced 6205 with WiMax??
I travel a lot, but I never saw a WiMax network, so maybe it's a waste, but it would be nice to have the option.
Also which version did you buy, 1102, 1103? And can you post the ebay link? -
Bigfoot networks Killer Wireless-N 1102 - eBay (item 180686701593 end time Jul-23-11 22:53:27 PDT)
its the 1102 card with 2 antenna leads on it.
The network card is great, the range is a little less than the intel 6200 card though. In my office I get 4 bars with the intel, bigfoot gets me 2-3 bars.
But the network is much smoother, things download without random hang ups.
My intel card would always give me a "wave" pattern in download speeds, the bigfoot gives me a nice flat download.
The router that I am using switches between a linksys and something else (not sure cause I use the neighbors wifi) I have since installed a wifi range extender to make thier network bigger to reach my basement.
Just wanted to add this real fast, I tried to use the dell drivers from m11xr3 for this card. It errors halfway and says something about not being able to use on non-dell computers.. blah blah... so I grabbed the drivers from bigfoots website. Works great with those drivers. -
Hey Johnson, are you still happy with your 1102? It's been a few weeks since you updated this thread. Is it still worth it vs a 6200/6300? How about gaming? Can you tell a difference in ping and responsiveness?
-
Love it. I switch back and forth between the cards every other day to compair. The bigfoot will play videos withough any problems, the intel card would only play half the video then buffer for awhile.
Downloading is smooth and trouble free.
Playing battlefield 2 with the intel card would give me random spikes in my ping... punkbuster boots me half the time for that. bigfoot card gave me a smooth even ping that would never spike.
I would recommend it to anyone as a nice upgrade.
The only down side I have noticed was a lower range, but I fixed that by installing repeaters in my house and am currently working on my wifi range mod (external antenna) -
Just started looking at this card to replace the 6200 based on reviews all around. Is ebay the only spot to find it right now?
I'd love to grab it off of amazon some time considering returning it is free and I have free 2 day shipping. -
There is a member on the boards that sells it too, he is in the m18x section. But his shipping charge is almost as much as the card itself
-
I picked up the 6200 and it sucks (in my case) so I'll wait a while before jumping in on another card. International shipping can be a bear and tough to return.
Anyone report problems yet? -
if you want the best wifi card look into air pcap cards pricey but I have seen nothing better

I read on these forums somewhere that the Bigfoot 1103 has 3 antennas and the M11x has 2 antennas slots, meaning one will be unused.
I know the 1102 has 2 antennas, so does this mean the 1102 will in theory perform similar to the 1103 and will only truly benefit those with 3 antennas slots? -
the 1103 has a max of 450kbs
That extra antenna nets you the 150 extra. But with your m11x you will need to install a extra antenna to use the extra power.
You can get a 1103 card and hook up 2 antennas and the card will work just like the 1102. -
Alienware-Joel Notebook Consultant
I wonder how hard it would be to install an extra antenna, if at all possible.
Time to do some searching.. -
If you search for people who have installed the wwan antennas that will show you how to do it.
-
Is the description for the Killer Wireless-N a typo on the M11X customize page? It lists the card as Killer™ Wireless-N 1103 a/g/n 2x2 MIMO for Gaming & Video. It says it's 2x2 which is the 1102. The 1103 is 3x3 which reaches speeds upto 450mbps.
"The Killer Wireless-N adapters will feature two models: the 1102, which features 2x2 MIMO (multiple input and multiple output) specs for rates of up to 300 Mbps, and the 1103, which features 3x3 MIMO and offers up to 450 Mbps."
So is Dell using the 1102 or the 1103? -
Not really sure what card dell is using on the m11x, but since all the other cards that they list are all 2x2 cards I would assume they are using the 1102 cards.
Having 3 antenna for the wifi plus 2 more for the wwan would make for one cramped screen... not to mention I dont think that many wires would fit in the hinges. -
"Killer Wireless-N 1103 a/g/n 2x2 MIMO for Gaming & Video [Add $80.00 or $2.00/month1]"
I would hope for $80 its the 1103, and they are just using 2 antennae. Which speaking of, where can one purchase another antennae? I have a 450 router at home. -

Anyone able to use the Bigfoot cards along with Backtrack? The Intel cards never seem to be detected properly when I'm running this.
-
Thanks for the heads-up on these guys - just ordered one from eBay for my R2.
-
I have a question. I play MMO's and such online and my ping is always >100ms, I'm currently using the wireless card I got with my M11x. Does anyone know if buying this Killer wireless card would help with decreasing my latency? I mean, is a good wireless card essential for a good latency?
-
Yes the big foot would help you alot.
Really a wet sack of dog hair is better than the stock card that came with your computer. -
I'll be sure to get one of these Killer cards -
Yeah the stock cards on the r1 and r2 were not so great, the r3 gave you option for better cards though.
-
My latency dropped tremendously. There was always such a lag just loading videos prior to switching cards. Paired the Bigfoot with a WNDR4000 router.
-
-
Hi guys - expecting delivery of my Killer card tomorrow - but I'm embarrased to say I have never stripped my R2 at all - how do I fit it?
I'm ok with PC builds for desktops, but never stripped a laptop before. I have tried searching, but can't find anything.
Any help gratefully received! -
Turn computer over
Undo screws on bottom cover
remove cover
remove white and black wires on network card (center of computer, near front)
undo 1 screw holding card in.
Install new card
follow removal instructions backwards.
Install drivers from bigfoots webpage (not the one from dells site) -
The m11x I have has very very tight fitting ant leads and I damaged a card removing them. Done this type of swap mAny times and never had this issue before so I doubt there will be any issue - just take your time
-
Excellent, many thanks for the quick strip comments. I had nasty visions of having to rip the keyboard out :S
-
Installed the card this morning. Downloading etc is good but not noticed much difference with ping. In the PC monitor for ping it is sitting at a stable 145ms. Anyone have any idea why it's so high?

How To Find & Use The Fastest DNS Server Available
-
I'll wait a while... lots of folks loved the 6200 too.
-
1103 has been released and available on eBay
Bigfoot Killer Wireless N 1103 3x3 half mini-card | eBay -
They list its maximum as 300 Mbps, when i though the 1103 was 450 Mbps
am i missing something or have they bought up a bunch of 1102's and added a third antenna jack?? -
Most likely he just copied the specs off the 1102 page. There is another seller, I purchased my 1102 from him, selling it also. He has the correct specs.
Bigfoot networks Killer Wireless-N 1103 | eBay -
If I order the 1103, how can I add another wlan antenna? I cannot find where to get an internal laptop wifi antenna.
-
Found this on another thread. Now the question is, how hard is it to install?
U.FL antenna | eBay -
Alienware-Joel Notebook Consultant
Ordered the N102 in the end. The hassle of installing another antenna wasn't worth it.
Awaiting delivery -
If you decide to install this antenna the one piece of advise I can give you is to drill a small pilot hole in the very center of where its going to go, then just keep stepping up to bigger drill bits till you have the correct sized hole. I tried to use the large bit right away and all it did was wander around and destroy the plastic on the case..... turns out the metal of the chassis is very very hard and doesnt like to be drilled.
I have the 3rd antenna installed in mine via this method, but I only have the 1102 right now, waiting for my 1103 to show up.
I need to figure out what plug to use for the external antenna though.
