So my M11XR2, which I got in November 2010, has finally broken. The hinges broke about two or three weeks ago and now the screen won't display, so I'm using my TV now.

I'm thinking that one of the wires must have gotten damaged from the wear and tear of using the laptop while the hinges were broken. Would Dell replace my laptop? Or could they say it was due to neglect? I have a years warranty left on the laptop.

The hinge is a known issue, they will fix it. They also send out an entire new display with the hinge fix, it's all 1 unit.

I bought my R1 second hand with that issue. The plug was just pulled from the back of the screen. I plan on getting my hinge problem properly fixed by dell as I have the pc in my name now. Just wanted to give it a couple of months in my name first.

Shouldn't matter at all. Dell fixes/replaces the hinge out of warranty no questions asked.

It's a very commonly known issue, it's a design flaw, and hence is their responsibility to repair.

Same thing happened to my M11x R2 that was out of warranty several weeks ago. Dell offered me 2 choices:

    1. Send it back and it will take about a week or two for me to get it back.
    2. Buy an extended 1-yr. warranty and they will send a tech next business day to replace the LCD and hinge.

I went with option #2. I figured I'd rather not have to wait and worry with sending my laptop back and get it in a condition that I was not happy with.

Plus, if something were to go wrong with the laptop, I would have until January 2013 covered with next-business-day on-site repairs.
